5 guys burgers?

50 miles...100 miles round trip...would cost me about $10-$12 in gas (minivan)

I'm just kind of thinking that "budget friendly" doesn't jive with driving there.

My FIL owns a few 5 Guys and we absolutely love going to visit Grandpa at work!! The burgers are amazing and everything is so fresh...yes, we've been in the kitchen to see how they make everything. They are not even permitted by the company to have a microwave in the building (not even for the owners personal use)!

Funny this thread popped up. DH and I tried our local 5 guys for the first time on Sunday. We really liked it. Very simple menu.....but done well. We had two cheese burgers, one small fry (more than enough for two!) and two sodas and I believe it was about $17. Good burger......

Has anyone had the veggie sandwich? Can you describe? We have plans to eat there in DC next month, but I have a son who can't digest beef without pain. I noticed they have a grilled cheese and a veggie.

We love 5 guys because it's the only restaurant my ds can eat french fries. He has a sensitivity to petroleum based products and 5 guys is the only restaurant that we have found that does not use BHT, TBHQ etc in the oil.

Its actually a bun with all the veggies they offer and whatever sauce you want. I had lettuce, tomato, pickles and the grilled veggies with BBQ sauce. Kind of expensive for what it was. If your DS can eat grilled cheese, I would go with that one!

Thanks! You're right...the veggie doesn't sound very good for the $$.

We discovered it living in Fl. its the one near the Universal exit. We loved it. Peanuts were very good also, fresh, nor too salty. The burgers seemed to be hand shaped not worked too much or flattened and not frozen. I usually don't eat burgers but theirs was very good.

Now we are back in NY they just opened one up on LI and they are not as good. They seemed more dried out. Only there once could have been a bad day. But the one we went to in Fl. was never off.

My dd is a vegetarian, she didn't like the veggie sand or the grilled cheese (too greasy for her).

I guess I am the odd one out but I don't like Five Guys. Everything is just too greasy for me. Their burgers are ok but I hate their fries. Just a great big greasy mess to me. And I LOVE french fries. I do know alot of people who love the place though but I personally really don't like it.

LOL, we have their menu hanging on our fridge. We LOVE their fries (I like the cajun ones but the plain are just too plain for me). Our first visit we got their regular burgers but now we get their little burgers....the regular sized ones are way way too big for us. Prices are probably different for different areas but in the south (TN, GA) the prices I have on our menu are 4.44 for a regular hamburger 4.99 for a regular cheeseburger 5.09 for a regular bacon burger and 5.69 for a regular bacon cheeseburger. The same burgers but 'little' with only 1 patty are 3.34, 3.94, 3.99 and 4.59. A regular fry is 2.69 and a large is 4.19. A large fry will feed 4 of my kids (3 of them under 7 and then a teenager).

The toppings are listed on their website I believe....they are all sooooo yummy.

We love Five Guys, but I made the mistake of going by myself one night. Dh and I normally share fries, and I just didn't think about how many there were going to be. I could not eat them all and I ended up bringing them home in the paper bag and throwing them in the freezer. (This was about 2.5 hours later and still in the paper bag). A couple of weeks later, I put them on a baking sheet and into the oven. They were perfect! Some of the best fries I've ever had at home. I will do this again if I have leftovers.

I guess it's okay for the price, but IMO it's barely a step up from fast food. Def. not impressive. The best burgers I've ever had have always come from local restaurants, not chains.

I def. wouldn't drive 50 miles each way to go. By the time you add on gas, the prices wouldn't be good anymore.

I could not wait to try 5 Guys. Have a cousin who raves about it. On Spring Break we went to D.C. and at at the 5 Guys in Alexandria, VA. The burgers are great, the fries are plentiful. But, the grease was abundent. My family loves a good burger, but THE GREASE. Maybe it was a one time thing. It was really good and I'll give them another try. After another 1000 miles on the treadmill.

I recall reading in the newspaper write up about Five Guys, that the cooks can only flip the burgers once and cannot squash down on them EVER as they fry. So, for those of you who think they are too greasy, that's probably why. The owner of Five Guys believes (rightly) that this makes the burgers taster better and meatier.

I wish I were eating there tonight after reading this thread! Love it!

I'm sure they don't use lean ground beef either. The fat is what gives it so much flavor(and grease!). Yummy!

hiddenj: I am going to have to try that! I never thought to freeze them. I don't like to throw them out--now there's another alternative.

I love their burgers, but I certainly wouldn't drive 50 miles to get one!

5-Guys is my favorite "burger joint" when compared to both chains and locally owned restaurants. I wouldn't drive 50 miles to try it, but it's definately worth the $ when you are close to one.:thumbsup2
