5 day cancellation question

I'm in a quandry deciding on whether or not i want to change a reservation that I have and I am uncertain as to how much more time I have --- If my check in is may 11 and my reservation says "modify or cancel with out penalty by may 6" does that mean BEFORE may 6 (so midnite tonite, may 5) or ON may 6 (midnite tomorrow) or by the check in time of 3pm on may 6? TIA
