Sandi - so sorry to hear about your MIL. I will keep her and your family in my prayers.

Thanks, Mary. She just went into surgery about 15 minutes ago. They're replacing the ball on her left femur. She's at least enjoying the air conditioning in the hospital (especially with the morphine drip). FIL won't run the window air in upstairs bedrooms and rarely runs the downstairs one. We've had at least 14 days of 90+ degree days in the last few weeks and NO RAIN. Everyone do a rain dance for Friday kareoke tomorrow (for us, anyway).

I couldn't stand seeing everyone's upcoming cruises listed in their siggies, so I had to add another one to mine. I can't wait for the 2007 dates. I'm going to go on the Wonder with both DD's, DGD's, DD best friend, daughter and anyone else in our circle of friends and family that we can talk into going. I've already requested 3 SPH from inventory control. None of them have cruised before, so I'm really hyping this cruise. Hi, my name is Sandi, and I'm an Obsessive/Compulsive Planner.:)

Thanks for the update! We'll also keep everyone in your prayers!

One of the first things he asks MIL is 'How do you make coffee?' At first I thought he was joking, but he was serious. He drinks 3-5 cups of coffee a day and has no clue. \

I'm going to be in reeeaaally big trouble some day - With some effort, I can make regular coffee-almost always put in too much - even though that's what the directions say.... for my daily mocha - um, nope, don't know how to work the expresso machine...I even get it delivered bedside every a.m. so, there's not much incentive for me to learn... ;)

John loves it when I call at work asking how to do something...I wind up on the speaker phone and all of the engineers get a big laugh...I've had to call him to ask how to iron patches on Maggie's brownie uniform and even ashamed to admit - how to tell when boiled eggs are finished and still don't really know...

When I started getting all these eggs from my chickens, I had to look up on the internet how to hard-boil them. I had done it before, but always guessed and sometimes never came out right.

Angie, at least your family is far away (I hope that doesn't sound as bad as it looks when I typed it). DH got a call yesterday evening saying that his mom (77) fell and broke her hip. FIL is 86 and can't take care of himself. Not that he is an invalid, but she has waited on him hand and foot for the last 50-some years. DH took him home and had to fix his supper last night. SIL picked him up to bring him to the hospital. One of the first things he asks MIL is 'How do you make coffee?' At first I thought he was joking, but he was serious. He drinks 3-5 cups of coffee a day and has no clue. DH is the closest sibling, but thankfully others are coming in to town for the weekend and next week. I would refuse to cater to him!
Sandi, hope all goes well with the surgery and recovery.
The "old school" relationships were pretty much like that weren't they! I think an more even burden is a better way. At least that's the way it works around here, pretty much..... :rolleyes1

Mary,

"Your" thread on the main board has been interesting to follow. I'm glad you cared enough to ask the questions!!!

:cheer2: someone discovered the meet boards :cheer2:

Has it answered any of your original questions?

I think it added more of my own (At times my marketing research/customer service background sneaks back to the surface....)- How can we help someone feel more welcome and/or not excluded when people join at different times? Is there more expected beyond what you and many others post as welcome to the board? Is there an expectation of reading the entire thread like the main board discussions? What would encourage a lurker or dissatisfied poster to join in? If someone is dissastisfied with the daily life "fluff" What should the function of a meet board be that would be differentiate it from a main board thread?

If anyone else is following the topic on the main board, is there any other thoughts?

Thanks, Kevin. The 'old school' just seems strange to me. I never saw that with my own parents who were in the same age group. I love my MIL, she's a very sweet lady, and I'm sure she'll enjoy getting pampered by 2 of her daughters coming to stay for awhile, if they can stand to be close to their dad for that long. There is a reason that DH is the only sibling that lives close, and why he only visits 2 or 3 times a year...

I haven't seen it, yet. I'll have to motor over there and check it out. :moped:

What he's hinting at is that when he's out of town, I can't make coffee. Well, I can make it, I just can't tell how much to use. We use a grinder. Making goood coffee is Kevin's job.

Stacey, hope there isn't enough wind to blow the fires back your way. Keep those windows closed! Do you have central air, or swamp coolers? Kevin pointed out to me yesterday that the swamp cooler will let the air in along with the smoke.

We usually try to survive with the swamp cooler on until July, but we turned it off and turned on the central air the first night of the fires. Kevin is exactly right, it was sucking the smoke into the house. With as much smoke as we had this morning, it didn't matter what we had on or off. But it has turned again...so the skies are now clear.

Sandi...sorry to hear about your MIL. Mine fell last week and had a partial hip replacement on Friday. Sounds like the same exact location of injury. At least now my brother in law will actually be earning his keep, caring for her. He's lived with Mother his whole life.

You need one of these... we have something similar, and it works great. You put the right amount of water in, and the timer goes off when they're done. Perfect eggs every time!!!! We use ours every single week!!!!

Hope that MIL is doing better, and that FIL can survive.... they're in our prayers... as is DH who has to deal with it all!

My mom's neighbor had major surgery yesterday, and none of her kids (some of whom are in the same town) has time to help her out. (So my mom has become the dog walker, chef, mail-getter, etc... I love my Mom!!!)

Wow... that sure sounds familiar!!!!!! (I make very weak coffee...)

Yea... a TOP shared with Diana, poor cooking skills and bad coffee!!!pirate:

Sandi, hoping for good results for your MIL. It's amazing what tricks old dogs can learn, when they have to. My Dad was the same way until my Mom died, then he took care of himself just fine until he found another lady to do it for him.

Pardon my New England ignorance (where we don't have swamps), but WHAT on EARTH is a SWAMP COOLER????:confused3 (OK... we've got swamps in FL... but I STILL don't know what a swamp cooler is??)

Monica...your post made me think. Wow...not an easy thing! LOL

I know that before they opened the "Cruise Meets" boards...we used to have our cruise chats on the main boards. It wasn't any different then, just a different location.
I think it is very hard for someone to jump in and join after everyone else has been talking for a while. I had to do that with the 10-Night, and was tempted to give up....but I am an outgoing, chatty person...so it was easy for me to worm my way into the conversation (butt in).....no everyone is good at that.

My opinion is that the Meets threads are for exactly what we are doing...getting to know eachother better. As we get closer to our cruise, we will start to discuss shore excursions more, and packing tips, and all that other really important cruise stuff, but it's too far away to do that now.

AND....where else can we go and talk non-stop about Disney and cruises, without everyone thinking we are total lunatics???

Hey Guys, I think I am ready to start doing the email pen pal thing with my kids.....Is anyone ready to start letting the kids chat but with out mentioning this particular cruise? My kids still do not know that we are going....on a side note, I paid off my Wonder cruise for this Sept today!woohoo I just used the online ressie taker thingy for the first time...definite positive! I wanted to book the Rasul and the balancing capsule and I did not see them listed, does any one know? Are we unable to pre book those things?
