YEEE HAW!!! We did it Stacey!!!

Boards were moving waayyy to slow - I didn't think I'd get it - my 40 sec were longer...

I was here, but now I have to go. I'm meeting a friend at Curves this morning. Time to get off the old duff.

Do your kids go to the same elem. as hers? She mentioned that the principal passed away this week. SAD!
Ang
Oh wow I did not realize the kids were going to the same school! You need to tell her to call me again....sounds like we are very close...not to intrude but what is the name of the street she is living on?
Yes the prinicipal did pass away unexpectedly last Sat..very sad.....I felt rather bad because my last run in with her was not so pleasant....A terrible thing to happen though.

Congrats to Monica on post 55,000!

Congrats to Stacey on reply 55,000!

Very cool - a milestone UTOP!

PDFG and all who need it!

Congrats to Monica on post 55,000!

Congrats to Stacey on reply 55,000!

Ditto, ditto! I love it when someone else does the work for me.

OK, Mary, this is going to sound weird, but it's worth a shot. I've been getting sick after every trip too, winding up sick enough to have to go get antibiotics after suffering for a couple of weeks. Then I read (on Ebay's Vintage clothing board, of all places) about Oil of Oregano. It's supposed to be an immune booster, and it keeps your nastiness from turning into pneumonia. I got some last time, and I was all better within a week, rather than the 2-3 weeks it had been taking, so I'm sold. See if Mark can find gel caps for you because the homeopathic drops are reeeeally nasty.

I'm never leaving home without it again, hoping it wasn't a fluke.

Jordan's school dance team just took FIRST in STATE!

Congrats to Lisa and Jordan for thier fine performances this weekend! :cheer2:

Diana - thanks for the input on Oil of Oregano. I may just have to try it.

Here's a recap of our wonderful week on Oahu. Sorry that it is so long.

The Ko Olina Beach Club - what a beautiful resort! There are currently 2 buildings and will have 4 when finished. There was construction going on both sides of the resort (one for a new building and one for some condos going next door). Neither bothered us at all (though we weren't at the resort during most of the day). We had a efficiency which to you DVC Members is a studio. All units at Ko Olina are 2 bedroom lock-offs which members usually trade out the studio part. It had a king size bed, sofa sleeper, chair, small fridge, microwave, toaster, coffee maker and a balcony with a table and two chairs. Plenty of room for us. We saw the master suite on the tour and it was awesome, but for free we were quite happy with what we had. We were also blessed to have an 11th floor ocean view! I head read on TUG that most trade-outs get mountain views so this was a nice surprise.

The grounds are amazing. There are 4 man-made lagoons that go from the Ko Olina marina on the south all the way to the JW Marriott hotel on the north. All connected by a wonderful walking path. The Beach Club is fronted on lagoon 3 which had cabanas, chairs, etc. We snorkeled over in lagoon 2 since we heard that had the best collection of fish. We also walked over to lagoon 1 one morning for a fish feeding they do every morning.

The Beach Club is located over on the West Side of the island. Far away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. I actually enjoyed that! We did have to drive a bit where from Waikiki you can get shuttles very easily. Ko Olina is very much a destination in itself. Every day you get a daily paper and a daily activity sheet much like on a cruise ship. They have activities for all ages. Twice a week they have people from the Polynesian Cultural Center come down for some demos like coconut palm weaving, Hawaiian games, etc. They also have lei making classes, and other arts and craft activities. Some are free, some with a minimal cost. Every afternoon they sell shaved ice in a variety of flavors out at the pool. Yummy!

There is a casual resturant right by the lagoon which we ate at for both breakfast (buffet) and dinner (off a menu). There is also a slightly fancier sit-down resturant called Chuck's Steak House that just opened a few weeks ago. We ate there our first night and enjoyed it. There is also the option of taking a shuttle over to the JW Marriott for thier resturants (we did this one night) or going to the golf course to eat at Roy's (we never did this). There is also the Marketplace that has food for sale much like at the DVC resorts and also has sandwhiches and salads available. Another food option are the gas grills on the property. There was one station of 4 and another of 6. They were always busy! They are also cleaned every day by the staff. Very nice. Of course those in the larger units also have full kitchens. This is a great option because eating out anywhere on Oahu is very expensive, but hey we were on vacation!

Speaking of cleaning. It is done very much like at DVC. Halfway through your stay you get a tidy day where they change out your towels etc.

One other thing I thought was great was the welcome packet. In addition to the coffee packages you would expect there was a box full of trial size goodies. Dove deoderant, Olay body wash and in-shower moisterizer, Fruitiese shampoo and conditioner, Tide detergent, Listerine breath strips and many other small goodies I can't remember. Very nice. Also even in the studio you got real plates, glasses, cups and silverwear.

We did go to a presentation on ownership (for which we got a $200 snorkel tour as our gift). If we had the money we might just buy in. As it stands right now we don't but who knows what the future holds.

Another thing that was different from DVC is that almost the entire area is no smoking. This is a Hawaiian law and not just at the Beach Club. You cannot smoke in the units or even on the balconies or at the pool. There is a very nice smoking area with benches and a nice fountain.

Now a recap of what we did day by day:

Day 1 Friday 2/23. Landed about 2:23 and we were on our road to the hotel about 3:15. Got a Chevy Monte Carlo from National and upgraded to a GPS system since this was Mark's first time on the island we knew we'd be doing a lot of driving. Unfortunately 3:30 is when rush hour starts and we were caught in heavy traffic. Got to the hotel a little after 4 pm and found that our room wasn't quite ready but we checked in and they took our cell phone number. There were these wonderful whicker lounges right in the lobby (which is all open air) so we settled in there. They also had water and fruit juices on tap in the lobby for those waiting. It was only about 15 minutes until we got the call. One reason we heard for the delay was that there was a ladie's PGA event going on at the golf course so the area was very busy. Settled into our room, had dinner at Chuck's and then back to the room to watch a picture perfect sunset. After that we hit the sack. After all we were still on Chicago time!

Day 2 Saturday 2/24. Started our day with breakfast at buffet right by the lagoon. Great offering of food including make your own waffles and an omlet station. After that we went up to the concierge desk to find out about the laua offered on the grounds. The girl there gave us lots of great information and asked if we had been to the welcome center yet. No, we had seen on in our building where they were giving out maps and lei's but hadn't stopped. So she walked us over to the one in the main building. Again this girl was very nice as well, though she did give us conflicting info from the original girl as to which laua to pick (they have 2 different ones now). She told us about the Marriott presentation and that if we went we could get the snorkeling excursion on the Ko Olina Cat as our gift. Since this is one of the things on my wish list and since we wanted to see the difference between Marriott and DVC we signed up for it. She gave us a great map and also some great directions on where to go to buy food (both grocery stores and other resturants). So we headed out to the nearby town to hit the safeway for some supplies (pop, water, tea, juice, eggos, and some breakfast sausage so we could have breakfast in the room a few days). When we got back we got dressed in our swimwear and headed out to the lagoons. We stopped by the beach hut to get these cool fish cards that you could wear on your wrist to identify the fish. Then off to lagoon 2 to snorkel for an hour or so. Walking back to the resort we were down on the beach walk right by the casual resturant when this woman started waving. We didn't pay much attention after all we didn't know anyone was going to be here. Then she shouted out "Mark and Mary"! OMG - it is a friend of ours from the DVC cruises! Haven't seen here since the 2005 and she doesn't post here on the DIS so we had no idea. What fun to meet up with someone we know from Florida here in Hawaii!

Day 3 Sunday 2/25. We started the day by going to lagoon 1 to do the fish feeding. It is a cute presentation where the cast member (using a disney term) tells you about the local fish and how the area came about. You then walk down to the waters edge where they do this small ritual to call the fish in to eat and she passes out the food. Well the fish have been coming to this spot at the same time for 4-5 years now so they are ready. You throw the food in and they jump up and grab it. Quite funny. Then it was back for our Marriott presentation. They said it would take 90 minutes but ours lasted just over an hour. Our guide did a good job giving us an overview and she wasn't pushy at all. In fact when we told her we probably wouldn't be buying so got much more low key. Next up was a test drive into Waikiki. We had to be there at 6 am the next morning so we went to check out where the hotel was we were being picked up at and where the parking area was that we were told about. A very easy find. After that we headed out to Sea Life Park. This is a small local place right on the ocean. They do a lot of interactive things like dolphin encounters, sea trekkin, etc. If we had done one of those it might have been better. We did get to see and feed some sea turtles which was cool, but all the penquins were in hiding. After that we drove up to the valley of the temples to see Byodo-In Temple. A recreation of a buddist temple which is beautiful. Then we headed over to Ala Moana mall for some shopping. Not a good idea on a Sunday afternoon. It was packed! So we got some basics at the ABC store, and the shirts we were picking up for Mark's brother and headed back to the resort. We did make one final stop at Hilo Hattie's since we passed it on the way in. A very kitchy shop but we got matching aloha shirts and a beautiful gold and pearl pendant for me. This evening we just had a casual dinner and a relaxing evening.

Day 4 Monday 2/26. This was the home of the brave tour that I've already gone into a lengthly description of. Monica - one thing on our tour was that the guide couldn't go on the Arizona with us. He did stay with us until we went into the theatre and gave us lots of great hints but didn't go with us. Guess someone must have complained from the other groups.

Day 5 Tuesday 2/27. After breakfast in the room we headed back to Pearl Harbor to go visit the Mighty Mo (aka the USS Missouri). Mark had realized that we really hadn't looked at the museum over at the Arizona so we went back there first and there was no line to get in. The tour of the Missouri was fantastic. Lots of walking and lots of going up and down ladders but well worth it to see all the inner workings of the ship. Mark especially enjoyed it as he got to see not only the engine room but also the laundry area! Here is a trivia question for you (answer will be in a new post in white type). There is only one toilet on the USS Missouri that has fresh water. Where is it?

After the Missouri we went to Pearlridge shopping center since they have a monorail which I thought Mark would like and we thought it would be quieter than Ala Moana was. Well the monorail was down for repairs and there wasn't much we needed so we didn't stay long. For dinner we took a ride over to the JW Marriott which was very nice.

Day 6 Wednesday 2/28. This was going to be our longest day. We left the resort at 8:30 for our trip up to the North Shore. The plan was to stop by the surfing beaches to check them out and then over to the Polynesian Cultural Center. Only problem was while the views up on the North Shore were beautiful the surf was flat. Oh well! The Polynesian Cultural Center was amazing! We did the Ambassador tour which gave us a guide around the islands. This was followed by a luau and then the main stage show Horizons which was wonderful. Then it was the long ride home back to the resort (got in about 10:30).

Day 7 Thursday 3/1 This morning was our Ko Olina Cat snorkel tour. By now I had been coughing for aobut 12 hours and wasn't sure if I was going to snorkel or not. We had picked the morning tour since it said the emphasis was more on the sights of finding whales and dolphins and less time snorkeling. The Cat is beautiful. They offered continental breakfast (muffins, fruit, breakfast bars, coffee, juice etc. In our first 1/2 hour out we spoted a whale! Most of the sightings were just coming up for air but one time he did a full out of the water breach! Awesome! Of course we were saw awstruck we didn't get a picture! Then it was over to the waters by the water treatment plant for snorkeling. The water that comes back out is warm and the fish love it. I was feeling pretty good so decided to go in. I'm so glad I did as the amount and variety of fish were amazing. OK maybe not to the extent of what Jim, Kevin and you other divers see, but amazing to me. I didn't stay out very long (we had 45 minutes and I think I was out about 25). Some saw a turle out there but we didn't. After snokeling we did more sailing and found two pods of spinner dolphins. One pod had three in it and another had 5 in it. So playful! Got back about lunch time and then walked back from the marina to the hotel. Mark stopped by the pool grill for a burger but I wasn't hungry. Relaxed for the afernoon and then went out to the luau at 4:30. Yes we had just been to the Poly Center the day before but really wanted to do this one as well. Because it was new it wasn't very crowded which was really nice and they had a great selection of food. Also while the luau and show at the Poly Center was about all the Polynesian islands this one focused on Hawaii and it had both traditional and new dancing. All in all a great show.

Day 8 Friday Time to pack up and go home! :sad1: We had to be out of the room by 10 am but since they know most people have late flights they give you temporary keys to use the locker rooms if you want to swim etc. that final morning. We opted to hang out in the Market Place area since I had gotten a little too much sun the day before. Plenty of tables and chairs where we relaxed reading. Then it was off to the airport. Check in was a breeze (no lines what so ever). Right before boarding started for our flight Mark went and bought two more fresh leis to bring home. We have them hanging in the bedroom like we did at the resort. So we have the smells of the islands for a few more days. The flight home wasn't bad. We both got some sleep.

All in all a wonderful vacation!

Now for the answer to the trivia question. Where is the one place on the Missouri that has a fresh water toilet and why?

The brig! They found that some of the men would go to lengths of drinking the water from the toilet to make themselves sick and have to be transferred to the hospital area instead of the brig. So they installed a fresh water toilet and let them drink away! :lmao:

Checking in from Charleston, SC. Lisa competed yesterday and had a very good meet. She was 9th on the Vault, 3rd on the Bars, 2nd on the Beam and 2nd on the Floor. Overall, she was 1st on the all around. Bugs (her friend who went with us at Christmas time on the Wonder) was 2nd. They were very happy.

CONGRATULATIONS LISA
Way to Go

Welcome home Mark and Mary. Sounds like you had a fabulous trip. I looked into Ka Olina a few years ago and the place looks absolutely fantastic. Hopefully Charley and I will have the opportunity to go someday.

You guys did a good job getting to 55,000 this morning. COngratulatinos Monica and Stacey. I had to leave early to get Ashley to swim practice this morning. I actually had to go across town and pick her up. One of her friends had a birthday party at one of the suite hotels by the airport last night. Normally, I might have let her miss practice, but since she is going to state later in the week, she can't afford to miss any practices. They are even calling a special practice tomorrow afternoon for the kids that made it (only about 10 out of almost 200 kids).
