5/15/2011 - Disney Dream 4nt Bahamas - May 15, 2011

.........

But this vacation...woooow. The adult areas weren't just much busier, we kept running into these really large, really rowdy, really drunk, and really loud groups of all adults. Now I'm not a teetotaler, and we got to know the bartenders quite well ;), but this was just frat/sorority party type obnoxious.

For instance, while Serenity Bay has always been very peaceful for us, it seemed much busier this time and the one huge group that we seemed to keep running into plopped right in front of us (I think it was a group of sales people? Looked like an incentive/bonus type vacation). And there was really no where to move to b/c the beach was pretty full. *sigh* we had to leave after just a few hours of louder and louder drunkeness. A bartender we spoke to said it had been a WEIRD cruise this time, and in fact they'd had to disembark someone at Nassau b/c he was kicked off for being too drunk and disorderly! At first we thought that was the "emergency" we turned back for, but she said this happened while we were docked, and his family actually stayed behind to finish the cruise.

I dunno, not sure why those people would choose a Disney cruise of all places, but it put a damper on our vacation a few times. .......

DH overheard some people complaining that the boss had not given them enough spending money. I wonder if it was the same crowd.

We are home. Had a few days at WDW in the HEAT and spent more time in our resort pool and napping than ever before. Maybe we are getting old :rotfl:

Ugh, the Love Bugs.... I'm sooo sick of the love bugs. It's going to take me several days to scrub them off the front of our car.

We too compared the Dream to teh Magic/Wonder and came to the conclusion that we like the Magic/Wonder better. We liked the restraunts, decor, theaters, shows, food, and lots of other things about the Dream.

But the crowded Adult spaces, sort of confusing layout of the upper decks (11, 12), and the fact that if you want to get into Palo/Remy from deck 11, you have to walk thru Cabanas to get there.... Yah, like I want to walk thru a buffet with lots of disrespectful, rude, careless people/kids with all kinds of messy foods while I'm dressed up for a nice/quiet dinner.

We liked the shows. We thought they did a great job with the props, scenery, storyline, etc... But then, we're big kids ourselves, so I guess we were easily entertained...LOL

When we got on the ship we had all our lugage with us, and one of the Cast memebers walked us to Enchanted Garden via the stairs!! It was very difficult/awkward to maneuver two large suitcases, bags, etc DOWN a flight of stairs while others were trying to go up/down them at the same time. We would've preferred the elevators.

We too ran into that same "business crowd" around the adult pool. They had the entire pool/bar/hot tub area occupied the entire time and there was NOTHING quiet about the area. We also found that even with a good breeze on deck, the adult pool was very hot and was lacking a decent breeze.

The aquaduck was cool, but a 30-45 minute wait from even the middle of the stairs... UGH. my wife only got to ride it once, and I rode it twice.

Cabanas was good, but confusing. Soo many people were waiting in line at the ends get plates and go thru the line, and no cast members were telling them that there are other places along the line with the same options and they can skip ahead. It wasn't until the 3rd morning that we saw the bar in the middle, but it was never open in the morning when we coul've used it.... LOL

While we didn't book another cruise while onboard, we have another cruise already booked. We went to the cruise desk and got prices for Alaska. It was great to see them open two desks and process more people at a time, but think they should open even a 3rd desk to help. They need to do this on the Magic/Wonder!!

THANKS to everyone for the FE gifts. We hope everyone enjoyed the gift we gave (mostly the Disney Silly bands and a few other Disney figureines, etc...). We're going to organize our stuff a little better for our next cruise.

Well, enough for now. I need to get ready for work, so I can pay for the next cruise.

Sounds like a lot of people have a lot of good observations which could help DCL improve the DREAM experience.

If any of you have not shared with DCL on the on-board evaluation, you could use the "contact us" at the bottom of the DCL webpages.

Hoping everyone has a good day!

I bet it was the same group, although the boss seemed "generous" enough to me. During embarkation we encountered them first at the pool, though we sat inside the Cove Cafe to avoid the bugs! The whole time they took up the pool, an older gent who seemed like the boss kept bringing buckets of beer for them. Finally I said to DH, "Errr...have you noticed that despite all that beer they've been drinking, none of them have left the pool yet?" Ewwwwwwwww....

Also, at CC, one of them was bragging that in just two days he'd been cut off twice already at bars, and had finally been banned from ordering alcohol by DCL altogether! To which he said, "Well if they hadn't banned me, I wouldn't have gone to my room and made an all vodka cocktail and fallen down like that!" To which his coworker said, "Yeah the only straight line you could do would be coke." Oookay. Since he was banned, they instead bought drinks for him the whole time we were at CC :rolleyes1. As a former HR person, all I could think is that that is one understanding but shortsighted company he must work for...and also that that poor kid desperately needed some help :sad2:

I just wish they left more room for writing on those forms. I had so many CM's I made a point to get the name of b/c they were outstanding. I hope the powers that be could read my tiny handwriting! ;)

I also didn't have room to mention they might want to look into the "automatic" door at the Cove Cafe. It was open when I went to step through it, but the darn thing tried to close on my head! Though at least it reopened after ricocheting off my big melon. I laughed my rear off, but you should have seen the look on the face of one of the white suits who happened to be standing there :rotfl: Seriously though, I also had an issue with an elevator door when I put my hand out just as it started to close to stop it for another family, and it kept closing :scared1: Everyone in the elevator went, "Oooooh!" I think someone needs to adjust the sensitivity on those things before that's a little kid in there.

We are home. Had a few days at WDW in the HEAT and spent more time in our resort pool and napping than ever before. Maybe we are getting old

Sorry you guys got the worst of the heat. It was hard for us when we were there, but I just saw it was even worse for the weekend afterward. Eeep! At WDW, DH said, "May keeps running around calling itself a spring month, but it lies." :rotfl: We are DEFINITELY getting too old for that commando touring...or at least my legs are ;) We now consider the resort at least 50% of the vacation.

yes my husband ran into some overly intoxicated ppl at animators our first night.
Also I was truly disappointed, I have food allergies and lets just say the ball was dropped a few times. Remy was excellent though.

Oh my goodness, I can't believe I failed to mention this! On sea day, around 10-11am, DH and I went and sat on the top deck forward, just outside the conceirge deck section. And I kid you not, this young guy walked up, went up to the railing and started smoking a joint! He tried to be surreptitious about it, but it was unmistakeable (oooph, the smell alone!). Though you can tell it's not helping his paranoia any, given the way he kept whipping around giving people the evil eye as they walked by. I just said to DH, "I feel like we are in an alternate Disney dimension on this cruise." I mentioned it to the bartenders at Meridien, and said, "I just don't know how the heck he got it past customs." And they looked at each other and said at the same time, "Nassau." So, I guess it happens more than you think, even on a Disney cruise ;)

Aaaand to completely switch topics, did anyone see the shuttle on Nassau day? DH tried to go up on deck at the right time, but had to leave for a massage and I was ironing some of my clothes in the laundry room, so we still don't know if anyone saw it.

This was my first time participating in a FE group and it was my son's favorite part of the cruise. His eyes lit up everytime we found surprises in our FE. Thanks to everyone!

I just have to say: The FE gifts were amazing! It was our favorite part of the cruise! HUGE thanks to all who participated and spent so much time creating magical memories for all involved!! I can't wait to book our next cruise! Wanted to book before we disembarked but DH about had a heart attack! Gotta pay for this one first....AND the VR ceremony! ugh :guilty:
Sorry we didn't get a chance to meet everyone. Every minute was filled with something it seemed.....
Glad to hear Villians Tonight wasn't a huge fave for some. Makes me feel a bit better about missing it. Also missed the crush show at Animator's b/c our dining rotation got messed up due to our Palo dinner. Plus we spent 3 hours of our sea day going thru pics from our Shutters photography session.
Yeah, the ceremony pretty much took over this cruise. But it WAS the reason we booked so I keep telling myself they'll always be a next time. We missed so much b/c of it but I intend to book again and make up for it!
Thanks again. Maybe we'll get the chance to cruise again with a few of you! :lovestruc

We walked by you while you were getting your photos done here :) We were hanging out at the forward part of the deck waiting for the sun to go down. You were VERY VERY BEAUTIFUL!

Heeey, we saw you too! I think you were standing overlooking the lobby? I thought it was a Princess meet at first :thumbsup2

The funny thing is how many of you I was right next to but didn't realize it until I reviewed the posts I missed before we left. We sat a few chaises over from Bubbasmom and DH at the adult pool on Nassau day for quite a while! And I saw Scrappy Tink a number of times: almost sat across from us at Remy before they changed tables and was across the walkway from us at Animators Palate. Also, someone just two doors from our 8008 cabin had our cruise door magnet. Small world for such a big ship!

Haha, wow! Can't believe so many DISers saw us on such a big ship!
Apparently, we were hard to miss! :rotfl2:
So, many cruisers had questions about our formal attire and offered congratulatory sentiments! We literally felt like celebrities on the red carpet!
Several complete strangers even asked if they could take a picture of us.
Kind of hard to believe that WE are memories in someone's vacation scrapbook!
But the crowning moment occured when a little girl exclaimed,
"Wow, mommy! Look at that princess! Which one is she??"
as she rushed over with her princess book and pen expecting to get my autograph!! :cloud9:
I can't imagine a more magical VR. My heart just melted. :lovestruc

glad you had some good times
sorry about the automatic doors

Good for you--writing in the margins of the form!!
I used stationery from the room and asked for more to add comments beyond what the evaluation form requested.

When we got home I remembered one more compliment--Pablo from Guest Services who found a CM with the same camera as mine who had a charger and could charge our battery since neither DH nor I had remembered to bring the charger!

So I used the Contact Us at the bottom of the DCL web pages. I went into it through my Castaway Club log-in and the name and address parts were already fllled in!! :wizard:

Yes, we too are past the Commando Touring stage I am afraid

We saw you at least once--Princess dress and bouquet posing in a porthole seat. Our table mates saw you a couple times on VR day and when they told us about your dressi could fill them in on the story since they are not DISers.

Glad it went so well!! You all sure look great.

Hola everyone! Hope everyone enjoyed their cruise, and those still at WDW are having a great time!

I missed the last weeks countdown on here, which is the best part as you share the excitement, but as usual when we plan a vacation, we had some last minute bad mojo come our way so didn't have much time for the boards. But everyone leveled out long enough for us to have our vacation, so yay!

So here's my mini-review (believe it or not, this is short for me!):

I have so many thoughts about the Dream, some great, some average, some not-so-great. I admit we compared it A LOT to the classic ships, and there were times I missed many of the aspects of those ships. But I know DCL is still working out the kinks, and we enjoyed ourselves enough to do a dummy booking to switch out for 2013 when those dates are released. The ship was just GORGEOUS, and we were treated amazingly.

I was surprised that I did notice how many more people were on this ship than the classic ships, b/c I truly assumed others complaints on the issue were overblown. But I realized that my experience was probably a fluke. People always ask us (was asked 3 times on this trip!) why we sail a Disney cruise when we don't have kids. And we've always said it was b/c they really, really take care of the privacy and vacation of the adults. So while the kids and family areas may be busy, the adult areas were always very peaceful. We never sail Carnival or RCL b/c there are just more adults who want to party, and we aren't party people...we are relaxing people. And even the adults in the adult areas on DCL are pretty family-oriented to start with.

BUT, I know that the Dream is SO popular with her first year out and all the publicity, so hoping that by the time we sail again, things will be a little less crowded and a little more settled.

And that being said, we also met the NICEST people on this ship. We are pretty shy, but we struck up so many great conversations. One really sweet woman was sailing with four generations! She introduced us to her amazing 80+ mother, her adult children, and their children. We also met many other very nice couples who were SO grateful for the kid's clubs giving them some adult time :lmao:

We found the staff to be very nice, and most tried very very hard. Overall some of the complaints we'd read earlier about poor staff wasn't something we noticed too much, except for some surprising things from the Cabanas staff and the counter service people. I felt SO BAD for the poor custodial staff with the bug situation. They were working so hard, and you know they had zero sleep that first night.

We loved Pink, Skyline and Meridian, and thought the dining room food was better than in the classic ships. We actually only dined in the main room once, which was Animators Palate. Those pasta pursiettes were as good as they said! We had our own table that night, and DH was the first person Crush talked to, teaching him whale talk. VERY funny. Our room was amazing, 8th floor forward, though we must have been near a service area b/c in the morning and at night we'd hear BOOM, BOOM, THUD a lot.

And OMG, REMY!!!! Best service I've ever had, and the second best food I've ever tasted. Well worth it, though I had to take my heels off to keep from bumping into the walls after that wine pairing. :rolleyes1

Palo was good too, but after we left Palo we cancelled our brunch the next morning. Not because anything was wrong, I was just glutted out after so much food and couldn't take another round of stuffing myself :rotfl:

Weren't we so lucky how the storms kept missing us during prime time? We were equally lucky at WDW, as we only got rained on a few hours at DHS, and napped through a big afternoon storm, leaving the hotel for dinner just as it had ended. And at WDW...well, we must be lucky, lucky people. People on the boards complain a lot lately about the increasing rudeness of other guests. I was worried b/c I do not have much patience AT ALL for rudeness or even careless thoughtlessness, but I would say everyone we encountered was exceptionally polite and friendly. More so than in any other trip we've ever had. Aside from the heat and raw feet, we had a lovely time there as well.

Whew...that was a long one, huh? Would love to hear what everyone else's experiences and thoughts were! Anythings that stood out? Personally, I wish I could bring that hot tub, and those round padded chairs for two home with me. Heaven!

Was that that huge group sitting in a circle not far from the opening at serenity Bay??

Okay, did anyone not get a set of magnets from me? I thought I was being really careful with my list but I got back to my room with an extra set :( I hope I didn't leave anyone out and just miscounted! If you didn't, let me know and I'll mail you a set.

I just heard back from our onboard booking card that I dropped off... rebooked for a dummy date in Dec. 2012... wow I didn't realize they were still doing 50% deposit - saweeeeet! So I'll move it to (I think) Spring Break 2014, a 7 nt on the Fantasy, hopefully, eventually.
