I need some ideas for my husband's 40th birthday at the end of May. I want to do something fun for him since he has had a bad year. Here is the important information...

We live near Disney, all our friends have Disney passes so it could be a Disney related idea.

We don't live anywhere near family or "his" friends. I say "his" friends because when we lived in NH he had his own set of friends but here he has had a hard time making his own friends. He doesn't do much for fun without DS and I. He does come to Disney with my friends and I (women) and I would say they are his friends too. He doesn't hang out with their husbands because they don't come out with us so he doesn't know them very well.

Those that I would invite (3-4 couples with kids, one couple without kids and one single male) I don't know if I would make it kid free or not.

We're doing a party for DS's 2nd birthday at our house at the end of April so I don't know if I want to do another party at our house at the end of May.

So any suggestions? I want it to be fun because he has had a rough year, but I'm at a loss!

ETA: I forgot to say I would like it to be local. He just started a new job in February and time off isn't an option yet. It could be a 2 day thing though.

This happened to me when I turned 40.

My DSis lives in Toronto and we are pretty close. I've flown out to there for her milestone birthdays and she's flown in for some of mine. Approaching my Bday, my DW told me we were going out to celebrate. Eventually I figured out that we were heading to the airport. Of course I figured out that we were going to pick up my DSis. After some squirming, DW admitted that, yes, we were going to the airport, but try to look surprised.

When we got to the airport, my DSis called my cell and asked me to look up at the arrivals/departure area. I looked but couldn't spot her.

Then she told me that's where I was going to be in a few minutes.

What???

Just then my DMom and DDad came around the corner with my suitcase all packed and a round trip ticket to Toronto for the weekend. DW had also arranged to get me some time off from work. My flight was leaving in about an hour.

All in all it was probably the best surprise gift I've ever gotten.

So... is your DH still in contact with friends back in NH? Could you send him there? Or surprise him with a trip to Vegas? Maybe just the two of you?

That's an awesome story!! I'd love to surprise him like that.

After reading your suggestions I realize I forgot a few details! He just started a new job in February so time off isn't an option I don't think. I'd love to fly his friends here but one is a stay at home dad and he can't make it, one his wife won't allow it and one was just here in February with his family.

Is there someone who could watch your child overnight? Maybe send him for a sleepover?

I would do an overnight stay at the Poly or Grand, and have an adult evening with a nice dinner and adult activities.

It would be a nice change of pace, a surprise, and NOT in your home so soon after your other party.

I didn't think of that! He loves AKL and Jiko so that may be an option.
