No that's not a typo.

Need to get from the house to airport 2 hours away and have a party of 6.

Going in August and the only rental place local quoted me this price.:rotfl2:

Is it me or is this just insane?

I ended up having to book 2 cars.

It's not insane. The agency is telling you they don't want a one way rental on that size vehicle. The price is designed to accomadate customers who absolutely want to rent but discourage others. The agency wants the vehicle in the renting location. The fee probably includes the cost of getting the van back plus mileage. Do they have to send 2 employees to the airport so one can drive it back? Did you price it for your trip, parking it at the airport? Academic questsion. What would they charge for one day if you returned the van to the renting location

The daily charge in town would be $125.

And I am in a town on 200k going to the largest metro in the state and the largest airport so I know that somebody will be coming south to the location(as there is 4 in the area).

Flight out is at 6am so heck it could be rented that day and make it home by closing.

Guess my issue is it makes it very difficult to get to the airport. Nothing else holds 6 so now we will have to take 2 cars.

As for sending employess you don't need to as you have a couple choices.

1) By force. See in the fine fine print of the rental reservation you agreed to being upgraded. A mini van is an upgrade over many classes.

2) By "giving it away". Being in the rental industry I have done this and it works wonders. Say a family comes in with 5 and they had a standard and the rate is $55. Say I have a mini van which would seat 7 so you'd have plenty of room and I can give it to you for $40.

Trust me it will go south in short order.

August is too far away to see good rates, generally. Don't lock yourself into something that can't be cancelled. And keep checking as the months go by.

This I don't get.

I know its 6 months out but as of now there is 1 company that has these.

I'd think more lead time the easier to get.

Guess companies would rather scramble to get inventory.

Trust us fellow DISer's when we say you are looking way to early for a rental.

Go in and try to rent that van as if you were picking it up next week and see what the price is. I bet its a lot less :cool1:

I never book my rental car until the Tue before my trip because that is when the rental car co. release their last minute specials. And I have had great luck everytime. Yet if I look today for my rental I need in May it will be several hundred dollars for a rental of a compact.

The issue I have with that is if they are sold out. Looked at the rest of this month and sold out 2 of the 3 next week ends.

I guess I don't get the logic of last minute when everything at Disney is 6 months out.

Guess you plan ADR's and then do nothing for 5 months. Its killing me.

I booked my rental cars but no CC used and I can cancel if something comes up.

Your looking for a rental for six months from now. Rental car companies only keep vehicles for an average of 6 - 12 months. There is a good chance that the company doesn't even have the vehicles for August yet. I know that we flip our minivans around April/May. Add a one-way rental to it, and the prices are going to be high if you rent now. I agree with pps. Wait a couple of months, and check the rates again. They should drop significantly.

Sure, a minivan at the airport could be rented and back the same day. Or it could go somewhere entirely different - and then how does the rental agency transact the reservations for the following sold out weekends. Can you guarantee the rental company that this mythical arriving famiky will return the car to the same location from which you rented it? How?

Logic is simple... I have gone to Disney many many times and I know that I don't have to book until a few days before I leave. I don't spend 5 months fretting over high rental car rates mainly because we usually don't plan our trips that far out. We usually plan a month or two out. In fact planned a trip last week for the first part of May. And we always get a rate of no more that $125 for a weekly rental.

I wish it was that simple here.

Orlando rates are cheap. Oregon not so much.

Would love to just go but have work/school to plan around and 4 kids school to plan around. And this is our first trip in a decade and my younger kids have never been so I am planning a lot. Figured planning ahead would be rewarded. I guess not in the case of car rentals.

And with work I don't know what may happen. The months before we go I may be working long days and out of town or not be working at all such is the construction world.

No one is saying to NOT book it. I just said to not lock yourself in. You did well; you make a reservation that can be cancelled.

As time goes on, keep checking. It should come down. When it does, change it or rebook it.

And it's always possible that a more specific post about where you are and what airport might (maybe) result in other ideas that you hadn't thought of. :)

what it would cost to drive your own vehicle and park it there. In my little neck of the woods (Connecticut), I could park & fly for less than $100 for a week.

another option that we have used is to spend the night before leaving at a hotel near the airport, leave the car there and shuttled to the airport by hotel. ended up costing less than rental costs or long term parking. we got there in late afternoon, the girls got some pool time, we had dinner and then early bed time. hotel drove us to airport and left us curbside at our airline. called them when we returned and they picked us up and drove us back to hotel where we picked up our car and drove home. how do you plan to get home on way home?

OP - you mentioned private transfer but did you check into hiring a limo? based upon rates I've seen in many areas, you could likely hire a limo for at least 1/2 the price.

extreme imo,;) but if it's imperative you all be in same vehicle, depending on how far you are located from the airport; might be less expensive to pick it up day beforehand and return within 24 hr period.

good luck

Also check how much limo service would be. We found it was cheaper to take a car to the airport than to park or rent something.

Flying out one airport to Orlando and flying home into a different airport.

From Eugene Oregon where I live to Portland Oregon where we fly out is a 2 hour drive each way.

I looked at a shuttle and it was $59 a head but not going early enough for us. Figure a limo would be atleast that much if not more.

Big issue we have in Oregon is between Eugene and Portland is not much of anything.

Are you doing this because of a cost difference? If so, is it still a savings to have to spend so much on transportation to/from 2 different airports?

I sometimes forget how lucky I am to live 10 minutes from an airport with VERY reasonable (and non-stop)fares to the Mouse.
