My son is scheduled for his 4 year immunizations 2 days before we leave for Disney. I've heard these shots are "bad ones." I don't know if people mean there are so many, that 4 years olds understand what's coming and dread it more/react more, or if there are bad side effects. My son has had minimal reactions in the past to shots. Anyone with any experience? Should we just wait till we get back to be safe? I don't want him with a fever and being sore on our trip...

13 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My daughter had them in April and had no issues other than the sore arm and slight sleepiness that day. That has been her reaction every time since she was a baby. I think her flu shot is the worst each year and that is minimal reaction.

None of my kids have ever had any reactions to those.

When DS got his before school last year he just sat there and didn't flinch, but after the doctor and nurse left the room he said, "Mommy, those really hurt"

If you are worried about fever (which I know some kids do get), couldn't you just come back for the shots after you return from your trip? I know our office lets you do that in case your child happens to be sick when they come in for their physical.

No problem or side effects from the shots...I think it is just the amount of them plus it is harder to give a 4 year old shots than say an infant that has no idea what is coming. DS ended up jerking when they tried the first shot so he ended up being jabbed 5 times total. Not looking forward to DD's in March but I wouldn't move your appointment or anything. He should be fine.

My kiddo was fine. No tears, no reaction. I just gave some Tylenol for his arm.

My daughter had no issues at age 4 and we took her on a Disney vacation the next day.We just made sure we brought Childrens Tylenol and motrin with us

If you are concerned, just wait until you come back. A few weeks won't make a difference.

My buddy had tenderness at the injection site for the three days following the shot. No fever or anything else.

I'd postpone the shots til after your trip... the effects of the shots might be uneventful... but We always seem to leave the doctor's office with more than we came in with!!! if you know what I mean...

Thanks for all the advice AND PP, you are right. I didn't even think about that! I think I will just postpone the visit. He probably won't have any reactions (as I said he usually doesn't) but we don't need to catch anything else.
And for the poster who said her child didn't react until the nurse left - WOW!! I can't imagine it will be that uneventful for my son, but I can hope!!

Thanks again for all the advice!

My daughter never had any reactions to shots... untill her 4th checkup... She had a raging fever for a few days and an ugly ugly ugly rash on her arm. The doctor said it was a reaction to one of the shots (sorry I forgot which one, the information is written down upstairs lol)

Also... my DD is very smart... she knew that going to the DR meant getting shots and she screamed and cried like never before, she is very pale usually but during the appointment she turned red as an apple.

I wouldnt chance it. You never know if your child will/wont react to immunizations. Make the appointment for when you come home.

I have seen quite a few four year old react to these shots. I would wait till you get back. I too agree not to take your child into the office right before a trip, even the well side might be risky. We however kept DS5 home pretty much the whole week before our trip and the 3rd day of the trip he came down with a virus! Sure he picked it up at the world!

We split the 4 year shots, so he had 3 at 4, and 2 at 5. HOWEVER, we were only able to do this because he is not scheduled to start kindergarten until he is almost 6.

We refuse certain vaccines and the ones we do give, I only allow 1/appointment. I would play it safe and wait until you come back.

My son just had his shots yesterday. This year he knew they were coming because he heard the nurse talk about them. But otherwise he was fine. Of course he didn't like getting them but once he could get up he was back to his happy self. He did have a slight (99) fever last night before bed but otherwise nothing unusual.

I actually have exactly the same issue. I was worried about a reaction. My son had the check up appt and we are holding off on the shots until after we get back, and we are splitting them up (we always have) so he will get the mmr shot when we get back and the others will be split up (I never give more than 1 at a time because then i don't know what he's reacting to).
jmo. Good luck and have a great trip
