4 Cyl: American Vs Foreign

I am looking for a small SUV. I have heard good things about the Honda CRV but it only comes with 4 cylinders. My exprience with AMERICAN 4 cyl: engine good for the first 4-5 years then engine sort of peters out. Are foreign engines any better? I am also looking at the Tribute and Escape for this reason. thanks
