What a trip. lol Had a nice jolt this morning. I'm staying in the Grand Cali hotel Villas with park view and testing for world of color has been on since 9:00 pm last night. I went to bed close to mid night and it was still on woke up at 4am and it's still on just playing continuously. They also tested on Sunday as well but only once. Those staying here now and in the future make sure you know where your emergency exits are...
ooh and also there was a possible fire on Sunday that kind of concerned me. I went to a DVC member meeting and was detoured away from the conference room due to a " possible" fire per cast members. Once we were let back in the building another couple was upset that thier kids were in thier room and did not hear or see any fire alarm. But they did hear the "ok" message after the building was inspected as did we. We had just walked down from our room and also did not hear or see any alarms. but once we got close to the lobby everyone was evacuated in the main building but only the first floor.

oops spelled earthquake wrong and I cannot edit my post for some reason still.

Wow, I'm glad everyone was ok. I hope there isn't a bigger one on the way, we are going to be leaving for DLR in 3 days.

I heard that part of the 5 freeway, near Downey (north of DLR), is closed because there was a little bit of damage from the quake. I didn't hear how long they thought it would be closed.

Two years ago we were at Disneyland when a 5.4 in Chino Hills hit and the rides were shut down for hours- many never opened that day. Now we always have an earthquake plan when separated. Yes, we have cell phones, but they could be down or very busy. We have a place to meet if there is a quake.

As for hotels. I read a book a while back about surviving disasters. One part was about hotels and suggested the first thing you do when you get to your room is walk to the stairs and count how many doorways it is from yours. If there was smoke, you would get disoriented so you should crawl along and feel the wall, counting doors as you go. It also suggested trying the stairs once to know where they end up.

Glad you are ok, and hopefully that was the end of it.

Glad that you are okay and having a nice trip. I was going to say that you got the full California experience but I see now that you are from San Jose where they know a thing or two about earthquakes! ;)

How are your enjoying the villas? Anybody offer you any incentives you couldn't turn down?

I hate hate hate hate earthquakes of all sizes and types - and this one was particularly close. Too close for comfort, as it was right IN Los Angeles, as opposed to some that are much further out. I felt two really sharp jolts - you could blow on my building and knock it over, so you can get a sense of how shaky it is during even small quakes!:scared1:

I would love to be there when the World of Color testing is happening. Well, heck, I would just love to be at DLR, perdiod! That will make me forget my quake nervousness very quickly!!;)

I didn't feel anything. I didn't know till I read this thread. We live where there are lots of little shakers so I guess I slept thru it lol
but I wish I could of seen world of color! We are at Hojo :confused3 no views of it here :worship:

you can go to paradise pier hotel and go up to the top floor and watch it.

No worries about a bigger one, a small shaker isn't ever an indicator of a larger one to come :) That's a one in a few million chance.

Wow. Was there any damage?

No damage - well, there was some damage on a freeway, but I think it was decided that it was not quake-related.

There is a 5% chance of a bigger quake happening today and in the next 24 hours. We have not been having any aftershocks yet, which is very unusual, so that's why they (CalTech) is keeping a close eye on things today, because the lack of aftershocks may mean that this was a foreshock to a bigger one, and it is on an already-active faultline, but by tomorrow, if we have not had a bigger quake, then it drops down to 1% chance of a bigger one happening.

This quake was a thrust fault - which is like what the horrible Northridge quake in 1994 was on - and it was 11 miles under the earth, which is quite shallow as far as thrust quakes go, meaning it is felt more strongly. A 4.4 located 50 miles away from where I am in L.A. (Beverly Hills area) would not be strong, and maybe not even detectable, but because this shallow, thrust fault 4.4 was centered IN L.A., it was quite a sharp jolt. You could have a 2.0 quake but if it is located right near where you are or under your house, it is strong!

Im glad everyone is safe and there wasnt much damage (if any). Keeping my fingers crossed that there isnt any more.

I didn't feel this one but whenever I feel a quake I go to the US geological society website and you can report that you felt it. They ask you a few questions about where you were and how it felt. Kind of fun to do.

That sounds so scary. I've never been in an earthquake or even felt the slightest of tremors (unless you count my visit to Universal Studios 15 years ago ;)), but I often have nightmares about them. :scared1:

only incentive was the cruise.... We even went to a members only event thinking it would be juicy... but not at all. I thought these premier passes would be thrown in the mix and then I would bite. but didn't happen so i bit the bullet and bought the passes on Sunday.

If any of the rides only had the effect of a 4.4 earthquake, people would consider it boring. The hurricanes in Florida are a lot scarier.

At least there are warnings which precede the hurricanes and tornadoes, allowing people to get to safety. Unfortunately, we get no such warning here in L.A. before quakes. And a 4.4 that is centered close to where one lives can be very frightening. A far away 4.4 would barely be detectable. But, fortunately, this one today seems to have caused no damage other than some things flying off of shelves - but it sure scared the heck out of me!!:scared1:

That's how fire alarms in high-rise (or other similar) buildings work. When smoke is detected on a floor, people are usually notified and evacuated on that floor and the floors directly above and below. That way, you don't have 15 (or however many) floors full of people trying to evacuate down the stairs all at once blocking the people who are actually in danger where the smoke and fire are. In 99.9% of cases, if your floor or the floors above and below you aren't detecting any smoke or heat, you aren't in danger unless multiple floors detect fire, in which case the whole building is usually notified and evacuated.

So, if it was just a small, quickly contained fire on the first floor, that's probably why those on the upper floors didn't hear an alarm. :)
