Do you know what your kids are doing today? My daughter has informed me that 4/20 is the day the kids get stoned all day. She said many of them skip school and get high all day and all night. Or they do it before school and every chance in between that they get. I'm not sure what the significance of the date is, but this is an annual thing. I'll have to ask her tonight, or maybe someone else here knows.

420 is the 'universal time" to light up. So 420 on 420 is a big deal to those that do.

ETA- I don't agree that kids should use this day just to be irresponsible- skipping school etc.

I'm assuming they are going to school, and studying, like usual. Although yesterday, our district just had its second suicide in 3 weeks...and dd's friends were calling till late last night-- many are not going to school today because there are rumors someone is going to shoot up the high school. (I didn't understand this part, because nobody knows who STARTED the rumors, and my dd and her friends go to the JUNIOR high school.) DD was sent off to school as usual.

ETA: forgot to add that my friend from childhood celebrated 4/20 happily, every year. She and her friends headed off to a camping place, and froze around a bonfire.

Our oldest son is celebrating his 23rd birthday today. (And I'm feeling much better today than I was 23 years ago!!)

I seem to recall there being a Facebook group called something like "Yes my birthday is really 4/20 so get over it!"

Well, I never used it as jargon in my 7+ years on the job. And neither has my DH who's got 11+ years on, many of them on gang teams... but I knew the association that the number had with marijuana. But you're correct about the 10-20 and 10-4 ones.

It is Adolph Hitler's birthday, another reason the date is so significant. That came up after Columbine happened on this date.

I checked on snopes.com and sure enough 420 is a slang term started by 12 twelve students in California in 1971 who would meet at 4:20 to light up. It is four-twenty, not four hundrend twenty.

In Jan 04 the California gov signed Bill 420 regulating marijuana use for medical purposes.
