You know what Michelle, I've been thinking that maybe I should forgo SM. It would be sooo much fun but I'm getting worried about luggage :guilty: Please take me off the SM list (sorry, this really stinks! stupid trains stupid planes)

I totally understand, and you are not the only one. The luggage space is the reason. :(

Our Aer Lingus flight home allows 1 bag per person free of charge... Unfortunately, our airline to Orlando charges $25 for the 1st bag per person! We (me & Gavin) are going to Naples, FL for 11 days in February & I am going to try & pack everything in 2 carry-on bags to save $50 each way... Just insane! Especially considering airfare during President's week was sky high in itself!!!

Do you think the Formal Night attire will be relaxed on the Transatlantic cruise?
I do believe that more people are having issues with packing and then formal wear is the first thing to not take with you.

If we don't wear formal attire, will we be out of place in the dining rooms?
It depends on what you wear instead. If you wear a suit then you will not be out of place. If you wear shorts then you will....

We are going to bring a tuxedo and Emiel is planning (i did the planning for him:rotfl:) on using the tuxedo for several occasions.
Ofcourse for Formal night but also for the Semi Formal night and for brunch and dinner at Palo.
Sometimes he is maybe a bit over dressed but when we don't take the tuxedo with us ( and when he only have a suit with him) he will be sometimes a bit under dressed.
We just make sure that it's well worth it to bring the tuxedo with us.

The Lanyards:
For us it doesn't matter which color they are.
Just do whatever is easy and simple.

The chatroom:
Perfect and i love to have some chats with you all but please let us chat on a time that is also do-able for me here in The Netherlands (being 6 hours ahead of you all).

Yeah, I'm just thinking that w/ the weight restrictions and also taking baggage on a train from Barcelona to Madrid that it might make it harder b/c you don't know what you're going to get & how/if it will fit into an already stuffed suitcase.

Yikes! :scared1: You're going to pack everything into carry-ons?
may the force be with you :wizard:

I am hoping/thinking the SMs participating will consider the weight of the suprises :) in their choices ...I know I will. I am still excited about both SMs and FEs (being a NOOB on the disboards community I cannot help myself:banana:)....

Not for the cruise-- no way! For my (and Gavin's) trip to Naples! Warm weather + we are staying with my parents in their condo-- so I don't need to bring alot of the essentials! Although I say that now... let's see when I start packing!

Regarding packing for formal/semi-formal nights....I thought I saw information somewhere as to how many formal/semi-formal dinners there would be on this TA cruise (is it 2 and 1?) and on which specific dates. Can someone confirm for me or point me to the appropriate posting #?

Thank you.

Night 3 - Formal
Night 8 - Formal
Night 9 - Pirate
Night 13 - Semi-Formal

Brooklyn thanx for the info on the ship arriving in Barcalona on the thursday last time round. It does leave room for some hope that there could be a firework display on arrival, i think it will just finish off an amazing trip. Sorry i never replied to your post earlier but i have been working 24/7 to get enough spending money for 3 shopaholic girls there just isn't enough time in the day. :)

My husband will wear a suit on formal night...that will probably be his heaviest thing. I've been thinking that maybe I should forgo SM. It would be sooo much fun but I'm getting worried about luggage

--- While my comments are NOT directed at anyone specific, I think many are focusing on the wrong element of this cruise. Let me clarify ...

1) For men, a suit on formal night is perfectly acceptable. While there will be many men wearing tuxedos, there will be plenty wearing suits. While there will be many women wearing gowns or sequined dresses, there will be plenty wearing pant-suits. DCL will NOT, I REPEAT, WILL NOT relax ANY code, merely because it is a T/A. It is a code ... not a requirement or an option. There is NO WAY (nor a reason) to relax anything, merely for a single cruise. No matter, if someone shows up in jeans, sneakers and a polo shirt ... THEY WILL look out of place.

2) I would not bail out of Secret Mickey's - just because of this being a T/A cruise. There IS a spending limit, and only the last gift is expected to be something more than a few dollars. I can't imagine travelling for 14+ days, without making plans for extra goodies to follow me home.

As an aside, I think many are worrying too much about luggage. People are spending LOTS of money to go on a cruise they may likely never go on again. While cameras and camcorders will be plentiful, purchasing gifts and momentos are part of the trip! If I have to pay $25 to check an extra bag of travel goodies, gifts and momentos, I will ask myself what I will remember 10-20 years from now ... the $25 spent to check the baggage, or the gifts and momentos themselves?

The first time I was in Europe was the late 1970's, traveling with my high school on a class trip through Austria, Switzerland and Germany. I made sure to buy gifts while abroad. One gift I purchased was a hand carved wooden plate from Heidelberg (my grandparents homeland). My grandparents have long since passed away, but I still relive memories of my trip (as well as my grandparents), every time I pass by the curio with the plate on display.

3) Assuming everybody does not bail out of the FE's, I will be making my purchases, and shipping them to the me on the ship, utilizing the information posted in #707 (page 47 or 48). I know most people will not have access to what I will be providing, and I also know it will NOT take up ANY space in their luggage. Okay, let the guessing begin!
:woohoo:

you haven't met my husband
we went to Europe 2x last year...the hard part will be NOT doing this cruise again! He's just about addicted to planning trips

We'll definitely be dressing for formal night the way we normally would on any other cruise.

I'm concerned that the space I might leave for precious unique trinkets from our travels will be taken up by my SM gifts. We always travel w/ a luggage scale and I'm usually pushing it right in the high 40's so every little bit counts for me.
If it were just the luggage charges I would just pay the extra $$ and not worry about it, but it's also traveling on the train from Barcelona to Madrid which can be very difficult if you have more than 1 piece or if it's really heavy (i.e. over 50 lbs for me to carry on my own, I'm a small gal!) So that's why I'm thinking I should opt out.

Whew! I'm glad to hear it - that would be A LOT of laundry :laundy:

I will be dressing in a gown for formal nights and a cocktail dress for semi formal. It is one of the few times I get to change out of my cinderella rags and dress up like the princess that I am!!!princess: It doesnt matter to me who else (my own party included) dresses up. We are spending an extra week in Italy after the cruise and then my DH will fly back to Iraq while we come home, which means I will have his suitcase to bring home as well as my own. But I dont care, this is a once in a lifetime trip for us.
I also am very excited about the FE gifts. And am considering signing up for the SM.

While I understand about dress codes, and I perfectly understand the need for one, I guess I'm naive about feeling or looking out of place. Of course, I'm "old school" and don't believe in wearing jeans to dinner anyway, but I've seriously never felt out of place with my attire. This includes formal night or cruise casual. When I'm dining at my table (which will likely be just the four of us - unless others want to join), I see three other faces, and we're dressed alike.

Disney's not going to stop me at the door if I'm wearing a dress shirt and khakis and tell me I can't eat that night. Additionally, I don't see what harm I'm doing to myself or others when I'm not wearing a tux. It's something that I might have agreed with you on when I was younger, Steven, but as I grow older, there's greater things in the world to worry about than a dress code.

As an aside, on my Transatlantic from 2007, there was a Franciscan Brother that was my age on board. It was a Royal Caribbean ship, and he needed a way to get from Texas back to a mission he was ministering to in Europe. The cruise cost me all of $340 (it was a last minute special, and there was no surcharge for single passengers), as it did him, but it allowed him to travel there cheaply with about 200 pounds of goods he was bringing back. Ah, the good old days on Royal Caribbean when 200 pounds was your weight limit. :rotfl: For a cheap passage to Europe, seriously, you couldn't buy a plane ticket and transport 200 pounds of cargo for that!

Anyway, he went to dinner every night very modestly dressed, with simple shirts and pants. Someone at the table asked him why he didn't dress up, and he simply replied that, "dressing modestly meant that there was more to give to others." Some food for thought, and it shook me up for a while. I seriously had to look at what all we were consuming, and see that there's a whole lot of things I worry about that maybe I shouldn't. Again, personal enlightenment rather than a message to the world!

I'm still not dressing up for formal night. The first one we've got Palo reservations. The second one we're planning to do the Palo brunch, and try the dinner buffet, as I'm sure we'll be stuffed from brunch.

Luggage -> I'm not worried about luggage as much as I am about having to carry everything. I don't think it's a monetary (or even a capacity) issue, as we're allowed to have 3 50 pound bags for each of us. However, dealing with 12 bags and 4 people is a logistical nightmare when you consider transit choices, so I'm definitely not planning on using all of that! I'm always reminded of "Romancing The Stone". If I feel like I'm going to chuck my luggage because I can't handle carrying it...maybe I've got too much.

I think mementos are very important. I think they can evoke very strong emotions, especially when there's sentiment and history involved. I'm very careful about my purchases for that reason, so that I'm not buying some cheap-o trinket that was made in China (unless I was visiting China). Definitely agree about saving some space for those items, because memories are important to us as well. Thanks for sharing that, Steven.

I was wondering....does anyone know when the character breakfast will be on this cruise?

We'll book our Palo reservations next week & I've read that sometimes the brunch is on the same day as character breakfast.

And is there something wrong with being addicted to planning trips?

No sirreee!! :goodvibes

but I will say that it kinda cuts our spontaneity when we book up all our vacations 2 years in advance

Note to all
Please please pretty please can we not talk about formal wear philosophies on this thread? This is always a hot topic on cruise boards, so please let's agree to disagree on this one or start another thread to discuss it. :flower3:

Darnit.... I got a burrrito for dinner ....to go...and they stuck FRESHLY made nacho chips in the bag and I did not see them do it.....arggggg! Of course I could not let them go to waste but they did anyway cause I ate them all....and they did go to waist! MY WAIST. OK maybe I will only lose 15 pounds before the cruise. popcorn:: I was out perusing light, packable, unwrinklable outfits to dress up in..... nothing yet but I put it out to the universe...:wizard:

I have it down in my notes from a previous poster that the character breakfast tentative dates were April 14, 15 or 16th (depending on rotation).

For a sanity check, I went back in to look at when they're doing the brunch, and it is basically all of the sea days (Day 3/April 12 to Day 8/April 17 and Day 10/April 19 and Day 13/April 22). Still nothing for High Tea. Sigh.

Oh yeah, I've been paid in full since November.

I'm hoping through the original form of payment. The new confirmation email sent after I made the changes said there was a -$200 balance due. :)

When the refund comes, I'll be sure to post.

-Steve

The $200 refund posted to my credit card today.
