4.1 Earthquake a few minutes ago

If you look at the map of global distribution for these quakes, (which you can do here http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/ ), it is not even close to the standard and expected distribution. There are significantly few quakes on the Asian side. Usually, there are quite a bit more over there. So, not only do we have an unusual number of quakes, but the rest of the world is quieter than normal. It seems to be California and the British Isles that are carrying the brunt here.

Well I hope there fewer on the Asia side. After two 9 class earth quakes in the last decade over there I would think that they've blown enough steam off for a few decades at least.

Unfortunately, earthquakes are not like passing gas.

We were having lunch at Carthay when the earthquake hit. Since my Mom and I are both living, born and raised on the East Coast, when it hit, we both reacted like, "what the heck was that!?"

Of course no one else in the restaurant reacted. Others went on with their meals and conversations, the waiters kept delivering food... We thought maybe we imagined it or maybe it was something outside. We were near the staging area for the food, so we heard a manager ask a waiter if all was okay after the quake. I heard him and let out with, "was that what that was?" We then got weird looks from everyone :rotfl: we had to explain we live in Florida.

Not gonna lie, since it was little, we were pretty excited about it. I mean, we were at DCA, so I guess it was all part of the California experience!

For years, my DH has refused to visit DL b/c earthquakes scared him. Thankfully (:rotfl: - for this purpose anyways!) Oklahoma started having them too. He realized that while they are scary and put you on edge, there really isn't anything you can do about them. Plus, I convinced him that CA is built to earthquake codes, so it is actually a safer place to be in earthquakes. Of course, if a big one hits while we are there, I may have to eat my words...;)

That is absolutely true. CA building codes are very strict, and very few buildings are granted retrofitting exempt.

I also think people who live outside of earthquake zones have a disproportionate amount of fear of earthquakes. Like:

Total number of people killed in earthquakes in California in the last 100 years: 369
Total number of people killed in Hurricane Katrina: ~1,836
Total number of people who die in car accidents each year: ~33,000

Even the 7.2 quake, which is very large, in the Bay Area in 1989, only 63 people died. That is only 9 more deaths than the number of people who die of bee stings every year. And roughly the same number of people who die from lightning strikes each year.

Of course, we should all hope that the big one doesn't hit in the middle of a thunderstorm directly following a freak bee swarming attack. :rotfl:

Agreed! Every year when we are watching the hurricane coverage we always talk about how we couldn't live there, or tornado alley. Sure we are overdue for the big one, but we don't have a earthquake season as an annual event.
