I read a few people here talk about getting trip Cancelation insurance to cover their YES tickets and Southwest flights.

Please can you share any info you have. I know NOTHING about this.

Thanks everyone

You can compare travel insurance policies and rates from various companies at squaremouth.com - You usually have to book the insurance within a few days of booking the flights/packages and all you do is select where you're going, what you want to cover and how. Make sure you read all the details if you're going for a package that includes medical insurance (more useful if going out of the country then to DW), and what type of cancelation rights you have. Typically there is a sliding scale of anything from 50% back - 90% back and only if canceled by hurricane/weather/outside action to cancel for any reason you want up until 24 hours before you leave. They have cancelation policies that cover you if a family member dies or gets sick, you lose your job etc.

The short answer is only if you need it.

Its 6 days before your trip, your spouse/parent/child/sibling falls seriously ill. You need to rush to their bedside or you may never see them alive. You've got $4000 in largely non-refundable travel arrangements already paid for in full for your trip. With the right travel insurance you can cancel everything and do what you need to and still get most of your money back to use on another trip later when they're better.

Its the day before you leave for your trip, a hurricane hits and you're stranded for an extra 4 days in Florida. With the right travel insurance you'd get money to offset the cost of changes in travel plans, delays, extra nights in the hotel.

Or in the case of a friend of mine who was traveling with my husband, mother and I to Ireland a few years ago. Its the first day of your trip, you have landed and have enjoyed a great day of touring. You've flown in 2 days before the guided bus tour starts so you can enjoy Dublin on your own. Its past midnight and you have just fallen asleep in the hotel when the phone rings, its your Mother, your Brother has been killed in a horrific accident where his motorcycle was hit by a tractor trailer while his wife and daughter witnessed the accident from their car directly behind him. You must fly home immediately, you will miss the entire tour, and have to pay for an emergency THAT DAY ticket back to the US, plus of course you still have the ticket to come home in 2 weeks which will no go unused. The right travel insurance would make sure you got all of your tour price refunded, and the unused airplane ticket refunded.

Its like health insurance or any other insurance. If you're lucky, you'll pay premiums and never get any benefit from it. But if you need it, you will be very glad that you have it.
