Someone please tell me why anyone would pay an extra $131/night for concierge service at the Poly. That would easily pay for a dining plan for a family of four.

What am I missing?

Because they can, it's part of the experience and the "free" stuff offsets the cost (a bit)?

Some people value concierge service and location more than the MYW dining plan. I've never stayed at the Poly concierge, but from what I've read it is a great choice. It all depends on what you value -- some people value concierge services more than others.

I never would pay for it personally, but some people will. Concierge isn't just about the food that is available in the concierge lounge. It is about an upgraded level of service. Some people like that sort of thing.

JMHO--

We just booked the POLY GVC it was 388/night (AAA). To US this was reasonable as we have 5 people and wanted a little more space. I don't mean in the room as all the rooms at the poly are the same...I mean in the morning when we are all getting ready. My DH can walk across the hall and have a cup of coffee and some fruit with my DS while the 3 girls are fighting over the bathroom!!!!! Same goes for the evenings when the younger 2 fall asleep and my teen can watch a movie. My DH and I can enjoy a glass of wine and plan out our next day. I am also in touch with them regarding our CRT ressies and a Wishes cruise. Getting up at 5:30 in the morning to make reservations is something I am just not able to do when I have a DS who still wakes up a few times a night for a hug and potty break.

Most of these things have nothing to do with the food available in concierge. However- I am hoping they will be able to assist us with our sons severe milk/egg/peanut allergies.

This is just our perspective of Poly GVC....hope that it helps.

People aren't paying for concierge just for the food. There are other amenities to take into consideration and to them it is worth it.

For $500 a night, does this take care of the breakfast meal and afternoon snack and dinner mean and late night snack. When I meant meal, I meant meal where it will fill you up as in replace of an actual full breakfast/dinner meal??

ahh, concierge. cant wait to do it again. stayed poly lagoon view once, staying yc and cr concierge next. for those of you wondering why, just try it once. i could care less about the pampering, it is all about convenience. i want convenience on my trips. it is vacation after all.

I don't know if $131 would feed a family of four at Disney. We are trying concierge for the first time this November.

Telly,

I think breakfast and dinner/late night snacks can be taken care of if you have a good sized lunch. We aren't big eaters and DH and I end up sharing a lot of dinners anyway. I wodul ratehr eat small meals/sncaks durign teh day than eat big meals. I don't think it works out for everyone, though. I mostly like the idea of the convenience. After five nights at the WL, it got a little old having to go out to roaring forks, etc to get something to nibble on.

I would rather have the dining plan than concierge. It is a WAY better value. But some people think differently, or they wouldn't sell those rooms! BTW, I figure you are fairly young, by your use of the phrase "are they on crack", in my day, we would have said "are they on dope", a young lady I work with is always laughing at me when I say "dope" instead of "crack", she says I sound like her parents!!! Yikes! I am only 38!!!LOL!!!

This is our first Disney trip in a LONG time and the first ever with our kids. We are staying Poly LVC and got the dining plan. As someone else wrote, it is convenience. Thank goodness I only had to email my list of PS choices to one person and received a doc. with everything in order and confirmed. I had a problem with billing and dining plan for Spirit of Aloha dinner. I just emailed concierge service and they took care of it. As far as the lounge goes, it sounds really nice. I imagine we will try to do light breakfast most days since we have the dining plan (which IMO is going to be too much food, anyway). Again, convenience. I have read about people stopping for groceries and such. Ugh. I hate to grocery shop normally. I sure don't want to do it on vacation. A glass of wine here and there.
Other reason, I guess, is that I am a spoiled brat :rotfl2: .

My family stayed Concierge in 1992 at the Poly...it was mom, step-dad, myself (17), sister (14) and brother (12). We did the concierge thing for breakfast, took snacks with us to the parks (no flames--we were kids and concierge had no problem with it!), had sodas and cookies later in the day. Now way back when--there was not a HUGE cost difference between the regular rooms and concierge when my mom decided to splurge. But whatever the difference was---we sure as heck made up for it with the bottled water, sodas, and snacks. (I have visions of Eddie from National Lampoon's --- not that I have any Eddie's in my family :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 )

With a family of 5---I think you could easily recoup the costs daily with the water/soda/wine offerings and the continental breakfast (as replacing a regular breakfast meal), and snacks throughout the day.
Not sure if that is the intent of concierge, but when you do add in the services they provide that make your stay so much more pleasant and easier--if you have the extra $131 per night---

In the scheme of the entire vacation you might have only increased the total cost by a few dollars---and the increased enjoyment that results is PRICELESS.

:)

ETA: This is how ancient my concierge stay was--they had the King Kamehameha suite in the lobby area that was later converted to the Wyland Gallery and now compromises half of the floor space of the new store that is in the lobby area. We had to work for that free food by walking from our room each night that was in the building facing the lagoon closest to the TTC. Maybe that's why they didn't charge too much extra. Aaahhh the good ol' days! :goodvibes

If you got it, you may as well spend it!!! ;) There are many people who can spend $500 a night without blinking an eye. To me its expensive and I could only do that on a REALLY special occasion! They don't seem to have any problems selling rooms at that price, so people must have the money.

Heck, I have less fortunate friends who think I on crack for paying $200 a night when I go.

We are planning our first WDW trip, we're getting married at the world!!

For us, booking Poly concierge was about being extravagant for a once in a lifetime experience! Normally, we'd consider ourselves lucky to stay at a Days Inn 30 miles out of town!!! :rotfl:

We liked the idea of the concierge lounge (breakfast, snacks, cordials/wine in the evenings) and the concierge level of service. We didn't really have a clue just how extravagant the reputation is until I started reading these boards.

I guess it just depends on your perspective...

We stayed Poly GV Concierge, we are doing it again in December for nine nights :cloud9: (with the dining plan) and no we are not on crack. We are a family of five plus one in the crib. It is so nice to let DH take the kids to the lounge for breakfast while I get everyone ready and packed up for the parks. They can go back again when I lay the baby down for a nap and have a snack and hang out, watch tv, play board games. The pool is steps outside of the Hawaii building. The boat launch is a just a little bit away, as is the GCH where you catch the monorail. If you figure there are 5 of us having breakfast every morning (with the exception of the one time we go to CRT which the concierge office will book for us :wizard: ) that's roughly $35-$40 per day, just in breakfast. Add in sodas and waters throughout the day, PB&J sandwiches in the afternoon, wine and dessert in the evening, you are probably up there in the amount it saves us. Now if we were park commandos, it might be a different thing. But with young kids who can't (and shouldn't IMHO) be in the heat and sun all day long, it is a nice treat :smooth: . We work really hard for the money we earn and when we vacation, we like to do it up right! So it doesn't feel like a waste, or throwing money away, but money well spent towards a relaxing and well deserved vacation. Is concierge a meal plan that will save you money, no. Is it a total waste of money, no, it just depends on what you want in a vacation. That's why WDW has so many different resorts and different levels of rooms, so you can get the vacation you want. :teeth:

We stayed Gardenview concierge during Easter '05 and had an absolutely fabulous time! We did get the public room-code so our rate wasn't close to what you've quoted, and we went peak season. Worth every penny to us!

Perhaps, but it's "Disney Crack: The mouse's special blend".

Concierge service is awesome.

Imagine never having to wait at a restaurant or getting the PS with 5-10 minutes notice before you go.

The continental breakfast and snacks for the kids throughout the day are very convenient, and some of the concierge lounges are so beautifully done you'd be tempted to spend as much time there as your room.

That being said, no, you're not saving any money staying concierge, so don't book it with that in mind.

But if you want the extra level of service, it's worth it.

Try it out...
