This is just my personal experience.
Within the last few months, I've had a biopsy and then surgery (not related to the biopsy).
Before the procedures, I went to the ER two times for severe pain. I was given morphine both times. I think it may have helped the pain, or maybe the pain subsided on its own, but it did not make me high in the least bit. I swear they gave me water.

After my surgery, I was given morphine. It made me high, but that could be because I was still fighting the effects of the anthesthisia. I didn't like it at all because it messed with my breathing. I swear I had some apnea while I was trying to rest.
Flashback 15 years ago when I had severe injuries from an automobile accident and was using demoral constantly to help with the pain. I loved it because it made me extremely high. When I was high, I could care less about the pain. It was a nice mellow high and I loved it. The pain was gone while I felt the high.
I can see where demoral can be highly addictive. I can't see why morphine is. I imagine morphine that a morphine addict uses, or the amount he/she uses, gives them a much better "high" then what I was given for pain control. I think that at the end of life, the morphine dosage is much higher to control pain.
Edited because I repeated my thoughts over and over!

Maybe just thinking about the demoral got me high all over again.
