All joking aside.. the price of plastic is going up right along with the price of oil... and the price of oil has EASILY gone up 72% since 2005.

These strollers are 100% plastic which is a product refined from oil.

Oil Price Per Barrel in 2005 = $60

Oil Price Per Barrel in 2008 = $103 (give or take)

Percentage increase = 71.6 % ....

Hmm.... :confused3

We're not talking about a product that is constantly in production, like cup lids or something. They've already got these things there and paid for.

And even if they didn't, how much use do they get from these things compared to the cost? If they paid $100 for each one of those things, I'd be shocked. That means in 3 days, they have their money back.

They were a rip off before. Now, they're just even more of a rip off.

Are you sure you are not my brother in law in disguise? You sure sound a lot like him!:)

Boom:

Your argument presumes that these units, in constant heavy use 365 days a year never need replacing..

And there are the hard costs of staff to rent them, clean them, repair them etc. And yes, they ARE going to make a profit on this venture. They're not there on a simple cost recovery basis.

I'm not saying this increase is 100% justified.. but I'd bet that the price of replacing these units has almost doubled since 2005.

I'm gonna get flamed, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say, it probably won't put a dent in the rentals at all.
1) There are people just like me, who would pay almost any price for convienence (sad, I know). The thought of lugging a stroller from home, then having to deal with busess with the thing. No way. I'd probably still rent a double. Thankfully my kids are teens, I'm thinking of making them push me. When the kids were small, we paid top dollar just to stay on a monorail line resort just for the ease.

2) In disney's overall park attendance, us folks on the dis are probably a very small percentage. They will still be enough first timers who will fork over the dough.

While I agree with you that there are some people who will rent and pay whatever they charge just to have the convenience of the rentals, there are many of us who have a breaking point and will flat out refuse to pay that price. I, for one, have hit the breaking point. I will NOT pay that price. No way, no how. And honestely, part of it is just the point of it. I do not like being ripped off, and those prices are a rip-off.

The only way that a company will realize that enough is enough is if people stop paying what they are asking. Threats are meaningless, actions count.

My kids love a certain brand of yogurt. It started out that they were .59 a piece, then . 69, then .79, etc. Well, our supermarket just raised them to $1.09. Done. I refuse to pay that regardless if it is convenient or not. Target sells them for .59 regular price. I know this is a little off-topic, but I do think that most of us have a breaking point.

FTR, I just reserved an SUV through Alamo for our summer trip for $378. A double stroller rental would have cost me $434.

I haven't seen this posted, but has anyone thought on Disney is going to make sure people are not taking strollers from other people? Can't you just see someone making off with your rented one, to save the money? I can. Or are we supposed to leave someone off of a ride to guard it?:confused3

Dead on! I posted that on page 2 last night as did a few other people. Its stinks to think that someone would steal at WDW but I live in the real world as does everyone else and I would love to see how many people have strollers stolen and how they will handle the situations when guests need a replacement and there are none to be had

I am not sure if anyone mention this but I think the double strollers are abused. I think many people with older kids, one kid etc... use them for more room for bags, space, sleeping kids etc.... They take up a TON of room in the park. Maybe by raising the price the abuse will stop. The people that really need double strollers will bring their own or pay the price whether they like it or not. Others will hold their bags, make their 8yr old walk, take breaks and so on. I wish the same thing for ECV's. It is just serious overkill at the parks especially in the summer.

I am not saying it is right to increase the prices and I too have kids so I understand the need for young ones to be in strollers but maybe the abuse will be cut because the people that really need them will bring their own strollers.

why is this stroller abuse? that seems a bit harsh. I have never rented a stroller but it doesn't bother me when I see tons of them in the park . if someone wants to pay the money to rent them...who are we to judge what they are using it for.

bartleby1,

I think you bring up a good point about reaching your breaking point. We are at that point not with this stroller issue, but with the room choices for a fam of 5 and the "holiday" surcharge for some meals.

I'm wondering if perhaps a new fleet of strollers in the works or something? Certainly, even given the three years between price increases, I still think this increase is WAY too high...
Knox

I am hoping that for $31 a day the new fleet can push themselves. I would consider the $31 then. ;)

that Holiday surcharge is crazy
I know WDW is a company and they have stocholders and want to make money but ugh it makes me sad how much they are raising costs. This is another reason why there should be some type of loyalty program for people who go every year or serveral times a year. Disney should remember after 9-11 and no one wated to travel and they had tons of open rooms. The economy is going down and air prices to get there are nuts. I just think Disney should be careful not to fleece people.

I just found out about the price increase this morning and I was heart broken! Our trip is coming up fast- April 25th, and we had budgeted to rent a double stroller at $18 a day for DS 2 and DS6. I did call Disney and spoke with several people who did confirm the increase ($27 a day for extended days) and most agreed it was high. I was hoping that I could reserve one at this price but no. So with a ticket or room rate increase- I can plan ahead, but with the stroller price increase I'm stuck?! This is just sickening! I'm not going to purchase a double stoller - because it's hard to find a stroller that would accomodate my 6yo. But I will be buying an umbrella for my 2yo. Regarless, we planned on taking breaks every afternoon- but it is NO ONE'S business if my 6yo needs a break. As one person commented- it makes him/her sick to see 6-7-8 yo in stollers all day. Just because you see one resting at 8:00 pm DOES NOT mean they have been in there all day!!! Our family has been saving for quite a while to be able to take a trip to Disney and WE will decide what WE need to make OUR trip more enjoyable for OUR family. WDW is a place designed for CHILDREN (of all ages)- and is a more appropriate place for cranky and tired 6YO than for judgmental adults who give condesending stares - even tho they have no idea what the conditions may or may not be. And if my child happens to have a brief melt down on our 10th day because he's tired of walking- so be it. If an adult doesn't want to see a cranky child- you're in the wrong place, try the Bahamas next time.

I find some of the comments on this thread offensive.

My ds is 4 1/2 and looks 6 1/2. He also is autistic and has epilepsy. He has low muscle tone and developmental delays. From what I gather from some of the comments if my son is not able to handle the parks at his age (regardless of his diabilities) without a stroller then he shouldn't be there at all.

My ds is on medication for his epilepsy which can make him very tired. If we do not have a stroller for him WDW is without a doubt not an option for us as he will fall asleep instantly wherever and whatever he is doing.

If he has a meltdown and cries (for whatever reason) am I to immediately remove him from the park so as not to ruin other guests experiences? If he has a seizure are we then supposed to carry our ds to the nearest first aid station? If he is too tired to continue walking after 1 hour then I guess he just has no business being there?

I am appalled at the comments that suggest that because of a child's age and size they should not be in a stroller. You do not know the circumstances of WHY that child is in a stroller. And you better believe that I would much rather trade all my son's disabilities for a child who DOES NOT NEED to be in a stroller. However, that is not our reality.

For some reasons I am dreading our trip (while also excited at the same time...weird i know) for this precise reason. Those people that most certainly make up a large portion of the population who are ignorant of disabilities and what families have to go through (and plan) in order for their disabled child to be able to enjoy WDW too. Honestly, I am almost in tears writing this (but I'm at work so have to hold it together).

Thank for reading my rant (if you made it this far)...

I don't see how it is harsh but this is just my opinion. I think a big 8yr old in a double stroller being pushed around the park by his/her parents is ridiculous. If kids can't keep up, it means you need to slow down or take a break.

Parents with twins or two young ones sometimes find they are no more available, especially when you park hop in the afternoon or are there at peak times. I am sure I will get flamed by people claiming "you don't know what hidden disabilities these kids have"

I emailed ABBF and asked them about strollers with higher weight limits. I'll let you know if I hear back from them!

I want a new signature:

14 day SUV rental from Alamo - $377.
14 day stroller rental from Disney - $434.
Disney's audacity - Priceless.

I'm sorry you feel this way but you really shouldn't take everyones opinion seriously that has nothing to do with your situation. If you lived your life like that you'll always be in tears.

Making assumptions about others never ends well. And that goes both directions..

Let's stay on topic of the price increase here please.

Thanks,

Knox
