My brother's father in law gave me a sealed bottle of Seagram's V.O. Canadian Whiskey, bottled in 1978. This is the oldest alcohol I have ever owned. I am thinking about putting it away for another 30 years and maybe passing it on again.

I would suggest that if you enjoy whiskey or scotch, then partake of it now:thumbsup2

Whiskey does not benefit from additional time spent in the bottle. The aging process from which scotch and whiskey do benefit from is in the cask prior to bottling. In other words, a 12 year old whiskey in a bottle is still a 12 year old whiskey, even if opened 50 years from now.

Either way, Enjoy!

I love whiskey and scotch and thank you for that piece of information ... I did not know that. I only think it is cool because I was only a little kid when it was bottled. It has the old label on it with the ribbon and everything. I don't particularly like Seagram's V.O. - I've only ever used it as a mixer. I am first and foremost a Crown Royal drinker ... straight and room temperature, followed by Dewar's.

I toured the Corby's Distillery north of Belleville, Ontario in the summer of 1988. Part of the tour was showing us a cask of rye whiskey laid down in 1955. I felt like worshipping at that cask for a good while until I was told that the bottle of 12 year old rye I bought in the liquor store would have whiskey just as old or older than the 1955 cask as the 12 year old refers to the youngest whiskey used in the blending process.

30? It only needs to be 21 to drink;)
