I have had it with 'field trips' for my ds. The latest notice came home yesterday that for Spanish class, the kids will be going to Mexican restaurant. They can have tacos, arroz con pollo or a quesadilla all for the low, low price of $30:mad: Ridiculous. My ds wants no part of it so he's not going so I'm spared but what about the kids that can't afford it? In the last month they have had 3 trips totaling over $40. Now this? It's almost June, enough already:lmao:

Thirty bucks is ridiculous. A taco, some rice and beans along with a soda and tip should go for no more then $10 at most Mexican restaurants.

Heck, tell the teacher to take them to taco bell and they get get a taco for a buck. :rotfl:

Thirty bucks for a Mexican lunch? Are they actually going to Mexico for it?

The best tacos I've ever had were $1.25 a piece and came piping hot out of the taco truck! I haven't lived in CA for a while now so it's possible the price may have gone up, maybe they are $1.75 now!
$30 for a taco dinner is crazy ridiculous!!!! That price, especially if there has been a string of recent field trips that cost money, must leave some kids out. Kinda' sad!

Maybe the price includes a bus fee to the restaurant, but that's way too expensive for a taco meal for a field trip.

Maybe there was a mistake, and it was supposed to be 30 pesos. That's like $2.35 right now. ;)

Yes the price includes the bus, in fact I'm sure that the bus is the majority of the price. I had suggested to the teacher in the beginning of the year to have lunch brought in but it waqs not her call, it's a district wide trip. Anyway, no biggie for my son. He went on a field trip yesterday and came home and said his head hurt from how loud everyone was on the bus:lmao:

My son's middle school always did the 8th grade Spanish lunch and I think it cost me about $12.00 last year. Of course, he went to a private school and volunteer parents did all the driving to the restaurant so there was no bus to rent.

My son had a field trip last week to a French restaurant for French class. They had a choice of appetizer, entree, and dessert. No transportation was provided. It was $30. That included the tip.

It's the Don Juan trip huh?! I did it with my first daughter and took a pass on it with DD #2. Nice mental health day with my daughter that day.

Even busing shouldn't cost that much. We paid $10 for busing to schools for football. I think we had six away games, some being 30-45 minutes away.

Can you go to a meeting (PTO or school board) to find out why it was that much? Is it so high to cover for the kids that cannot afford to pay? I think I can feed my family of five on close to that--not including beer, soda or margaritas. I can't imagine paying that much for one child to eat out.

LOL Yep except no more Don Juan's. I think it closed. Now it's Mangoe's in Bethpage. My older 2 went on it and that's a story in itself...the Spanish teacher kept telling them they had to wear dresses. Now, my girls do not wear dresses. My older one wasn't worried just wore a nice capri outfit but my middle dd was freaking out. She kept saying " Mom, Senora says I can't go if I don't wear a dress." So. I went to Senora and explained very nicely that my dd would not be wearing a dress but would be wearing a cute, colorful outfit." she apologized and said 'oh, of course." Later that day, I find out that she went into all the 3rd grades and asked if anyone had a skirt or dress for my dd to borrow for the trip b/c she didn't have any.:lmao: DD wore her cute shorts outfit and no more was said.:thumbsup2

I am going to inquire about the cost. Seems really high even with bussing. Maybe they are picking up the cost for other kids:confused3 I'm also going to ask what it's costing the other elementary schools that are going.

WOW, I am counting my blessings. My DD15 did this last week with her Spanish class/club. They took a bus to and from and we picked them up at school at around 6:30. They got a ton of food and their drink and tip and it was $12 a kid but actually she came home with $2 and said they over-estimated and told each kids they needed to only pay $10.

I do feel bad for kids who can't afford it too. I know some night say that is life but it stinks all the same. My DD15 took a trip in 8th grade that was like $150 a person. A friend of hers couldn't go because the family couldn't afford it. My DD went to her counselor and told them why she wasn't going and was told there was nothing they could do. It made my DD not want to go anymore but we had already paid for it. And she had a good time but felt kind of guily for being able to go.

My son is going today with his Spanish class and took $11. The price varied by order. The students chose from a menu ahead of time and calculated out EXACTLY what they would need, including tip, and were to take exact change.

Our 6th graders used to do Medieval Times in Chicago, that cost us $60 for busing and food. They took the Greyhound-type buses because it was at least an hour and a half trip one way. They no longer do this, now go to Amish country and I think that was $30, it was all you can eat. We've taken our kids there, I know it costs around $16/pp, including drink and dessert. They also went to a play. Took school buses for that, around 45 minute drive.

Kids in the high school can take a class where they combine two, one of the things they do is cook a meal from a country. Usually groups of four to six people, they bring it in for part of their grade. I thought this was a great idea, hoping one of my other sons takes this class.

Ah my dd went on a field trip for French this year too. They went to a sculpture park and then went to a french-type lunch cafe. She did have crepes. It also included bus transportation.

It may have been 36.00 bucks. I can't remember.

I can't imagine a Mexican restaurant being a big enough deal to warrant a school field trip in the first place. Around here, that's where you stop on the way home from the actual field trip!
