3 year old bumped his head and now is throwing up...should I be worried?

its a little scary because he won't stop throwing up. he got home at 1:30am, woke up at 6 and dry heaved for a while...not constant, but often. dh gave him milk and 15 minutes later he threw that up and has been throwing up off and on since.

the peds open in 15 minutes so will call them then. I talked to dh and asked if the er dr said to expect this and it sounds like yes, so trying not to worry.

I´m glad you took him to the ER. It´s probably only a mild concussion. But better safe than sorry.

Oh, poor baby and mom and dad. It's scary when they react like that to a head injury. Take care and let us know what the ped says.

Just watch for dehydration, that is why we ended up back at the hospital when my DD had a concussion. We were in contact with the peds all day and she'd called ahead so at least that time we were admitted and didn't have to go back to the ER. If they aren't keeping anything down it can happen pretty quickly.

Hopefully he'll feel much better soon, it is pretty scary stuff and hard when they are sick

off the phone with the peds. am taking him in this afternoon, but if he gets worse or shows other symptoms we're to go back to the er.

he just went to sleep so hoping he'll get some rest now.

I hope your son feels better soon. I don't know if he is still throwing up but I wouldn't give him milk again. Milk and water will make most people sick again or I know it does me for sure. Do you have any light soda like sprite or ginger ale or even gatorade/pedia light?

Also, there is an over the counter med that is liquid that you can buy to help ease the throwing up problems if they continue. I hope your son gets better quickly. I've no children but I'm sure that your heart is hurting watching your baby suffer.

I hope your son is feeling better, soon. I am glad you took him to the ER. Yes, as moms we tend to overreact, but as moms, we know our kids better than anyone, and can tell when something is just not right.

OP, so glad you had him checked out.

As for keeping anything down...have you tried ice pops? Since they're just frozen liquid, they can help with the dehydration concern.

OP, sorry about your poor ds!!

To ward off dehydration, get some pedialyte (it will replace electrolytes AND fluids). Only give him a spoonful every 10 minutes or so. That is a teeny enough amount that he might hold it down, but hopefully enough to keep him from needing anything invasive (like an IV!)

And do it sooner, rather than later since he's been vomiting for so long already.

If the spoonful is too much, just give him drips every few minutes. My pediatrician made the hospital do this for my dd when she went in for dehydration at 15 months old. She never did have to get an IV (IVs carry their own risks, although many people don't realize it).

I would not give any medication without talking to the doctor and getting a recommendation. Some medications have ingredients that might cause problems after a head injury (like raising blood pressure, etc).

Keep the following symptoms in mind and report any to your pediatrician. I hope he gets the all clear when you see the doc later and he starts feeling better. Poor little guy.

increasing sleepiness and confusion,
vomiting that persists
severe headache
inability to feel or move an arm or leg,
inability to recognize people or the surroundings
loss of balance
problems with speaking or seeing
lack of coordination

yeah, life is kind of throwing me curveballs at every turn. I figure someday I'll get to come on and post happy news again. thankfully, at least with ds, it didn't end up worse (and hopefully will continue that way)

thought I'd give another quick update. just back from the er with ds. we went to the peds at 2:30, and his dr. ended up sending us over to the hospital. they did another cat scan (normal again, phew), drew blood, and pumped him full of iv fluids. he threw up again while there (he just couldn't even keep small amounts of water down) so they gave him anti nausea drugs. we were very close to being admitted, but thankfully he kept a small amount of water and a popsicle down so we finally left at 9pm. lets just hope things will be better tomorrow!

I wonder if he may have a touch of a fllu as well? Sounds like a long time to be vomiting from a concussion? Who am i, just thank god he is ok, and he was checked out by the DR...

I hope for better news for tomorrow. Try and catch some much needed rest.
