3 WDW Trips in 6 months: August, October and December Reports *Completed*

On our way to the Boardwalk, Buzz and I stopped for a bit at the Yacht Club for a little while to take some pictures. I’m not the biggest fan of the Yacht Club (it just doesn’t feel as fun as the Boardwalk or Beach Club) and don’t usually get a ton of pictures here, but I was pretty happy with the shots I got this time. The resort certainly does pop when it’s in front of that blue sky!

After the trip, I found out that this gazebo is a popular wedding spot- something I probably should have guessed based on the hearts in the design and the cupid weathervane. We just thought it was a nice little garden.

Even though we didn’t get to go to EPCOT on this trip, it was nice to be able to still see a little of it.

A look back at the Beach Club before heading on to…

The Boardwalk! I’m sure that I’m probably mentioned this before in the pre-trip, but out of all the resorts in Disney, Boadwalk Inn is my favorite. I hardly ever get to stay there and even when I have it’s never more than a night or two, but I just love the feel of the place and all the theming. It’s so beautiful yet fun and comfortable.

boardwalk2-600.jpg

I had to get the almost cliché shot of the green benches.

boardwalk3-600.jpg

While we were around the stretch of gift shops along the Boardwalk, I checked to see if they had the Official Album in stock, but didn’t. There must be someplace besides the Main Street Emporium that has it! :confused3

One of the coolest chandeliers I can think of at Disney.

boardwalk7-600.jpg

There are so many cool little details throughout the Boardwalk’s lobby. I’ve always thought that this chair was interesting.

The same goes for this model elephant-shaped building.

The Belle Vue Room is one of my favorite spots in the whole resort. It’s a lounge in the evening, but when we stayed there they do a quick service breakfast in there in the mornings. It was so pleasant starting the day in that cozy little corner of the resort while old-fashioned radios play music and old radio shows.

boardwalk11-600.jpg

I actually put a penny into the machine on the right to see if it actually worked, but it turned out to be broken. The one on the left worked though- with no penny necessary either!

After exploring the indoor portions of the resort, we return outside.

Now, this is where we had planned for the trip to end, but I still had Disney Dollars to spend! So what do we do? Head to Downtown Disney, of course!

Next chapter: The end of our birthday adventure

Oh, I want to stay at Boardwalk even more now! :cloud9: I've always been drawn to Boardwalk, I'm not sure why but it just seems like such a neat theme. I must check it out!

Beautiful resort shots! I think those resorts are gorgeous and would love to stay there one day!

I'm sure that you'd enjoy the Boardwalk. Even if you don't stay there, it's fun to just explore. It's great at night too with all the entertainment outside and everything lit up. So cool.

Beautiful resort shots! I think those resorts are gorgeous and would love to stay there one day!

Thanks. The EPCOT resorts really are gorgeous. ::yes::

You are right, the YC sure does look great with that beautiful blue sky!

You really got some neat shots of the Epcot resorts. Just curious...where is that staircase that says "To the Boardwalk?" I feel like I've seen it but can't place it. :confused3

Thanks. As far as the staircase, if you're facing the main entrance to the resort, it's on the right side a little past the lobby. It basically takes you straight to the Boardwalk shopping/ dining/ entertainment area so you don't have to go through the lobby.

I think that it’s coming along. We still haven’t been able to decide on anything as far as dinner on the theme park days, but I’m thinking we might just play it by ear depending on how we feel or how late we want to stay in the parks. More on the December trip planning after I finish up October.

Sounds great! I love the holiday storytellers and recommend seeing as many as possible!

Looking forward to seeing them again. Mom's already requested that we see the Three Kings in Mexico since we haven't seem them in years. I'm sure we'll see a good number more too.

downtown1-600.jpg

Off to Downtown Disney we go! On our way in, we spot the Characters in Flight balloon overhead. I still can’t get over how high that thing goes!

downtown2-600.jpg

At this point, I pretty much was going between two things to get with the Disney Dollars that Buzz had gotten me for my birthday- either the WDW Official Album CD or a set of pins of the characters from Cinderella which included pins of Jaq and Gus the mice as well as the Tremaines- two pins that I had been looking for over the last few years. I was leaning towards the pins, but still wanted to see if I could find the CD to double check if there were any really interesting tracks on it. I figured it there was someplace that would have them it would be World of Disney. On our way in, we checked out some of the Halloween displays.

Dad would have gotten a kick out of all the Jack Skellilngton banners.

After going through all of the World of Disney, I couldn’t find the Official Album anywhere. Perhaps they’d have it at another store?

downtown5-600.jpg

Before leaving World of Disney, I had to do one of my favorite Downtown Disney activities- search for obscure characters in the mural on the Bird Room ceiling. Here’s the Grasshopper and the Ants from the Silly Symphony.

downtown6-600.jpg

One of Cinderella’s bird friends.

downtown7-600.jpg

The Rescuers.

downtown8-600.jpg

I ended up going to just about every store that I thought might have the CD or pin set- Once Upon A Toy, Wonderful World of Memories, Art of Disney, the Pin Shop, Pooh Corner and even the Christmas shop, all with no luck. I decided to cut my losses and forget the CD and just go ahead and get the pins so I returned to the World of Disney to get them. Apparently, I should have checked when I was there the first time I was there to see if they had the pins because they didn’t have them either! They had plenty of other sets with characters from Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, etc. but no Cinderella!

downtown9-600.jpg

While Buzz stayed in the Marketplace browsing some more of the shops there, I ended up checking just about every shop and pin cart in Pleasure Island and West Side for either item and couldn’t find them anywhere. I couldn’t believe it. I wasn’t quite sure what to do. I knew I hadn’t seen the CD anyplace other than Magic Kingdom so that was now out of the question, but I’d seen the pins at the Boardwalk and also at the gift shop at All Star Movies or Music, though I couldn’t quite remember which.

downtown10-600.jpg

Along the way back to the Marketplace to meet up with Buzz again, I got a few pictures of Pleasure Island. I loved the juxtaposition of the new balloon over the now-closed Adventures Club. Sort of an out-with-the-old-in-with-the-new kind of thing.

Buzz didn’t want to go back to the Boardwalk again and have to explain to the security guard at the entrance we came back to buy pins , so it was back to the All Stars for us. Besides using up my Disney Dollars, a trip back to the All Stars would mean a little more time to get to explore the resort and specifically, more time to take pictures of the Toy Story area, something Buzz was very happy about. I got to the gift shop and lo and behold, no Cinderella pin sets. It had been the All Star Music gift shop! We figured we’d stop by on the way out and (hopefully) get those pins at last.

“They’ll see. I’m still Andy’s favorite toy”

One last look into Andy’s room.

On the way out, we stopped by All Star Music and yes, the gift shop did have the pin set I was looking for!

cinderellapins.jpg

In the end, I’m happy that I ended up getting the pins. Since getting back, I’ve checked the tracklisting for the Official Album online and there really weren’t enough songs on it that I don’t have that I really would have wanted to make buying the whole CD worth it, which I somewhat suspected all along. The set, however, was great. I just couldn’t believe that not one store in Downtown Disney had the it! I think the whole search was worth it though. Not only do I really like the pins, but probably even better than that, it made the trip a little longer, took us to Downtown Disney and brought us back to see All Star Movies one last time- all big plusses in my book! Once my last Disney Dollars were gone though, it was time for the trip to end.

Next chapter: Trip wrap-up and reflections

I guess that goes to show you should buy what you see at Disney when you see it. :rotfl2:

I love the pin set. In fact, I noticed that there are a lot of movie pin sets now. It's nice to be able to get all the characters from one movie. :goodvibes

Hi Meeko!

All caught up again! Glad you enjoyed Cape May, and finally got your pain au chocolat! The characters are really good there, and their costumes are so cute! The Donald looked very handsome - hope you said "Hello" to him from me! ;)

Glad you finally got your pin set, the search was worth it, you got to have a good wander round some lovely places. Boardwalk looks gorgeous!

Di x

I hear ya on the official park album...we bought one several years ago and it really doesn't seem like they ever change it. :confused3

Cool pin set too. Glad you finally got it. I hate it when I see something I want and then when you look somewhere else it's nowhere to be found.

Well, most of the time yes, but not buying it when I saw it this time enabled us to go more places and spend more time at WDW which is a win in my book. But in all other circumstances, I agree- get it when you see it. I can't imagine trying to do anything like that if we had to get the the airport or if we were traveling with kids (or even parents  ).

And you're right, they do have a lot more movie pin sets too. They had one for Beauty and the Beast I was considering, but I already have a ton of Beauty and the Beast pins and none of some of my other favorite characters (namely the mice and the Tremaines), so I went with Cinderella.

I'd forgoten about you calling it pain au chocolat, but I love that. :cloud9: Cape May was so wonderful.

The search was really worth it. I think getting to have more time exploring the resorts and Downtown Disney was even better than getting the pins- and I really like the pins!

They seem to switch out a few tracks on that Official Album every couple of years, but they don't seem to ever add anything that interests me too much. I'd love it if they released more of the atmosphere music from the parks. There was one song from the EPCOT background loop on the album that I would have really liked to have, but that was about it and it wasn't worth paying $25 or however much the CD was for that one song.

Well, it’s time to wrap up another portion of this trip report, so in order to do so, here are a few reflections on Buzz and my October trip:

Weather and Crowds:
happybirthdaycrowdsweather.jpg

On both days of the trip, the weather was absolutely gorgeous. The temperature was pleasant for most of the day with the main exception being the time we spent waiting for the parade (lesson learned: find a spot with shade where it’s not too hot). The sky was a beautiful blue which was great for taking pictures, and we never got even a drop of rain the whole time we were there- a far cry from August and its daily afternoon thunderstorms.

The crowds at the Magic Kingdom were lower than we tend to experience when we usually go in August and December. The longest wait of the day ended up being Pixie Hollow (about 30 minute wait plus another 15 waiting at the entrance for the rope drop), and the longest wait for a ride was Splash Mountain (20 minutes). Most of our other waits never exceeded 10 or so minutes, and for a few that did, we used Fastpass to avoid the lines. I was a little concerned that the crowds would start pouring in after 4pm when the Halloween Party guests were let in, but even then, the crowds and waits weren’t any worse than before.

All Star Movies:
happybirthdayresort.jpg

Both Buzz and I really enjoyed All Star Movies. All of the giant characters and photo opportunities were a lot of fun, especially Toy Story which was undoubtedly both our favorite area. I’m still a little bummed that we didn’t get our room request to stay in Toy Story, but The Love Bug was fine too. It was in the back of the resort so it was a bit of a longer walk to the food court and bus stop, but not bad at all compared to some of the larger moderate resorts. Like I said earlier, it did feel like everything was just a little smaller than what we’re use to at Pop Century (smaller rooms, smaller food court, smaller shop, etc.), but it suit our purposes just fine. And though I can’t comment on their transportation to other locations, the buses to Magic Kingdom at least were running frequently, were never too full, and never made any stops at the other All Stars.

Like at Riverside in August, Online Check-In worked great here. And even though our room was not ready when we arrived, the new system that allows them to text you your room number when it becomes available was fantastic- so much better than having to call the front desk and see if it’s available yet. A lot of the Cast Members both at the desk and elsewhere at the resort were fantastic- extremely friendly, helpful and willing to go the extra mile. It was a great experience, and I’d definitely love to stay here again and maybe even try All Star Music too since it looked pretty cool.

New and Rediscovered Attractions:
happybirthdaynew.jpg

For me, I think one of my biggest surprises of the trip was the Move It! Shake It! Celebrate It! Parade. I was really expecting it to be kind of cute that we would take a few pictures of and then leave after a few minutes, but it was really fun to watch and very well done. Seemed like a great addition to the park’s entertainment offerings, and even if you don’t normally like parades, I’d recommend giving this a try. The Celebrate A Dream Come True Parade was also a lot of fun. I loved a lot of the changes the made from the last time I saw it like the new music and float decorations, and a lot of the new additions to the character line-up of the parade were terrific with the always-fun Tremaines certainly being a highlight.

Also new for me this trip (though not for Buzz since he passed on it) was Pixie Hollow. I’ll talk more about the characters there a little later on, but in a whole, I thought that it was probably the best experiential meet-and-greet location I’ve seen. It really did look great, and despite a less-than-magical trip down the “shrinking” hallway, it was still a fun experience. Finally, bordering on being a new and a rediscovered attraction for us was the new version of Hall of Presidents featuring President Obama. The new version didn’t turn me into a fan of this attraction, but I’m glad I at least saw it.

Dining:
happybirthdaydining.jpg

I think it’s safe to say that the undeniable dining highlight for the trip was breakfast at Cape May Cafe. The food was plentiful and very tasty and both our server and the characters were great. If you’re looking for a more low-key character meal or a nice resort breakfast buffet, this is a great place.

I was also really pleased with our counter service meals as well this trip. The shrimp basket at Columbia Harbour House exceeded my expectations and turned out to be a great quick lunch. I really thought that the look of the World Premiere food court at All Star Movies was really cool, and the food was typical or slightly above average from what you would expect to find in a resort food court, so thumbs up from me. Buzz enjoyed his meals as well. Another good trip for food.

Characters:
happybirthdaycharacters.jpg

Considering we only spent one day in the park and did one character breakfast, I’m kind of impressed on how many characters we met. By the end of the trip, I ended up meeting 18 different characters- including Tinker Bell, Terence and Fawn whom I had never met before and the White Rabbit whom I had never gotten an autograph from before- which isn’t too much less than I met in two full days in the parks in August. It really seemed like there were a bunch of characters out in the park, and because of the lower crowds, a lot of them had shorter lines than I usually see, which was great. Even Buzz got into meeting the characters a little more than he usually does and got to meet Woody and Jessie for the first time.

Out of all the characters at Magic Kingdom, I have say that Fairies at Pixie Hollow and the Tremaines were some of my favorites of the trip. Both groups were entertaining, great to interact with and really very funny. They’re certainly worth looking for if you haven’t seen them yet. Other favorites for this trip were Goofy, Donald and Minnie at Cape May Cafe as well as Donald in his Davy Crocket outfit in Frontierland. They were also a lot of fun and it was great seeing them in some different costumes.

Birthday and Halloween Events:
happybirthdayevents.jpg

As I’ve mentioned, this was our first time really getting to experience Halloweentime at Magic Kingdom. I really thought that Main Street looked great all decked out in orange and brown and the different scarecrows, pumpkins, statues and other decorations were a great touch. And though we didn’t get to go to Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party, what we saw of it looked really cool. I’d still love to be able to do that someday. Unfortunately, being practically rushed out of the park even before scheduled closing time due to the Party was the low of the trip and put a damper on the end of the Magic Kingdom experience. I understand the desire to clear the park for the Party guests, but it’s no excuse to be grumpy with guests or say that 6:55pm is “close enough” to the time to 7pm closing to tell guests they can’t even take a photo of the fountain off Main Street.

Of course, the main reason for the trip was to celebrate Buzz and my birthday, and what a celebration it was. As if getting Free Birthday Admission wasn’t enough, we had so many wonderful surprises throughout the trip from free birthday buttons at check-in, an autograph photo of Mickey and card in our room, little gifts and a free cupcake at a few of the restaurants, and more “Happy Birthday” wishes from cast members and other guests than I can even count! It was such a fantastic birthday and these little surprises were truly wonderful icing on the cake.

Well, I think that just about does it for October. It was a short trip, but such a great one! As always, if anyone has any questions I might be able to answer, please feel free to ask. Otherwise, thanks so much for reading. I’ll be finishing up the December Pre-Trip fairly soon, so stay tuned for that.

We’re in single digits everybody! It won’t be long now.

While we’re in a bit of a lull between finishing the October trip report and leaving for our December trip, I thought I’d post some photos from Buzz and my recent trip to Busch Gardens in Tampa. Along with its great coasters and animal exhibits, we also experienced some of the special Holiday festivities throughout the park. So, for all of you, here’s a taste of another Florida theme park at Christmastime:

The Busch Gardens Christmas Tree stands at the front of the park, complete with reindeer statues at its base.

New for this year is Santa’s Christmas Workshop- the park’s signature Christmas store.

Busch Gardens puts on three special Christmas shows around the park durinf the Season. We managed to see two of them (missed the Christmas on Ice show, but saw it last year so it’s ok). The first was Christmas Celebration which focuses on different traditions, stories and music of Christmas hosted by Santa Claus.

And, of course, Busch Gardens’ signature band- the Mystic Sheiks of Morocco- are on hand to play songs of the Season.

Hope you enjoyed this quick look at the Holidays in Busch Gardens. More on our Disney December trip very soon. :santa:

Yay for single digits!

Thanks for sharing the Busch Gardens pictures. We've never been there but it looks like a lot of fun!

I always enjoy your trip wrap ups. They are awesome and I love the way you do your pictures in them. :thumbsup2

Busch Garden looks very festive for Christmas! Both of those shows sound interesting!

Busch Gardens really a lot of fun. It's not quite Disney, but it's still fun- especially if you're into coasters or animals.

Thanks LL. The pictures are actually my favorite park of making the wrap ups. I love deciding which ones will best highlight the trip.

The shows were fun. I the second one was our favorite- really great. Buzz and I really enjoy Busch Gardens at Christmastime. It's always a great warm-up before heading off to Disney.

It’s about time to wrap up this pre-trip, so here are a few last updates before signing off:

First of all, Buzz and I went to see The Princess and the Frog over the weekend and we both really liked it. I don’t think it’s quite as strong as the classics of the Little Mermaid/ Beauty and the Beast/ Aladdin/ Lion King era of the 90s, and surprisingly I didn’t think the music was all that great, but I it was the best full length animated feature I’ve seen since that time time. :thumbsup2 It’s a must-see, and I’m sure we’ll be back to see it again soon. Hopefully, we’ll be able to take Mom and Dad to see it when we’re all together for Christmas. Also, the film’s New Orleans setting has me even more excited about staying at Port Orleans on this trip!

I’ve been hearing some reports on the crowds at the parks being pretty heavy lately. I’m not sure if the Christmas crowds are building earlier this year or if the crowds last week were due to Pop Warner, but I’m going to expect that the parks will be fairly busy.

As far as the weather, it’s feeling like it may not cool down after all. It was looking like the weather was going to be in the 50s or 60s for a high, but right now in Florida, the weather’s in the 80s, so unless it cools off quite a bit over the next week, it may be warmer in December than it was in October!

Also, it’s looking like Buzz Lightyear and Woody might be taken off my list of character priorities for the trip. I thought that seeing them at PIXAR Place would be something that Buzz would be excited about, but he seems fairly blasé about it, saying that he’d rather just check them out if we have time and the line’s not too long. If he's not that interested, it's not something I'm particularly interested in doing by myself since I just met Woody in October and I'm actually not the biggest Buzz Lightyear far out there. I may also take Aladdin and Jasmine off the list of must-see characters if the weather doesn’t cool down since my main reason for looking for them again is to get pictures of them in their winter outfits and I’m not that excited about seeing just regular Aladdin and Jasmine again. We’ll just have to wait and see, I guess.

Well, that’s about it for now. Hope you enjoyed the pre-trip, and see you when we get back! :wave2:
