3 Female College Athletes Lost To Suicide In Less Than 2 Months

I was also struck by the news. So sad.

I have a daughter in college who could have been a college athlete, but chose to put all focus on academics.

It hits me a bit differently/harder because of her.

This is a great open letter to college sports about some of the pressures that athletes face. My daughter who plays lacrosse just became an ambassador for Morgan's Message. Morgan's Message is a completely student run group where athletes can discuss the issues around mental health. This is from their website - Morgan’s Message strives to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community and equalize the treatment of physical and mental health in athletics. We aim to expand the dialogue on mental health by normalizing conversations, empowering those who suffer in silence, and supporting those who feel alone.

Morgan was a Duke lacrosse player who committed suicide in 2019. She had suffered a knee injury and when rehabbing began to question her self worth and while presenting as happy she was suffering from depression and anxiety.

An excellent book is What made Maddy Run? by Kate Fagan. I think that is should be required reading for both parents and student athletes. Asking for help does not make you weak. It makes you strong.

My youngest son who left his Division I football team in January because of many of these concerns. The coaches did not help and did not give him any support as he was battling through injury. They would question his manhood in front of the other players. He is 100% physically healthy now but mentally he is still afraid of failing.

My experience as a college athlete was for the most part great but it was stressful and I did question whether or not I wanted to continue to play every year. I am glad that I played but I see the issues facing kids today as being so much more stressful.
