3 drivers/ car rental ??

My mom and dad are coming with us next year...last year, they had their own car rental, but ended up leaving it at the villa we rented - they came everywhere with us

For our 2006 trip, we're just going to rent a minivan...DH and I are drivers, and my dad would also need to be included in the reservation...

DH and I reserve the vehicle...I drive free (Budget, L&M and who else?) as the additional driver...and dad has to pay the "additional driver fee" ??????

Is it as easy as the $5/day? Or am I missing something?

Well one thing is that some car rental companies charge more than $5/day. You can get a free extra driver with alamo if you use any coupon from the entertainment book (at least it worked for me with the $15 off coupon). It doesn't mention this perk on the coupon but when all the charges come up a free driver is listed. I don't think they let a spouse drive free so either way you do it, you will have to pay for one more driver.

National is $7 per day for an additional driver. Spouses are free for Emerald Club members.

If you rent from Hertz using a AAA code, there is no additional charge for other drivers who are AAA members. If you are a USAA member and rent from Avis or Hertz using a USAA code, there is no charge for additional drivers who are also USAA members.

With Avis, even thou there is no charge, you do need to identify all of the additional drivers and have them added to your contract. Next time, we would do this at the counter inside (where it is air conditioned) instead of heading out to the car lot as a member of Avis Preferred!

So it is just as easy as that...if the company will allow a free spouse additional driver, we'll just have to pay for "another additional driver".

So now I want a car rental company that will let me, ie, the spouse, drive "free" ,and the lowest/day driver rates for my dad

Anyone just want to lend me their minivan? Promise we'll take good care of it LOL!
