3 day date specific ticket - does it have to be used the first day?

I apologize, this has probably been asked many times, but here goes - since a 3 day ticket is good for 5 days, can I use it for that last 3 days or does it have to be activated and used the first day?

It is about 30 cheaper to start the 2 days earlier than my arrival date.
