Well, I think at least one year of my life has been taken away! Our 2yo DD woke up and was having a hard time breathing. She couldnt catch her breath at all. She has had a cold for two days - runny nose and cough - we had called her pediatrician about that and they said not to bring her in. Just use saline drops and elevate her head. Then she woke up and was crying, trying to catch her breath and saying her tummy hurt. She actually told us she needed to go to the doctor! :scared1: This coming from a 2yo who is scared to death of doctors! We called her pedi right away and told her her symptoms and they said they were closed and we needed to bring her into the the ER right away! Luckily we have a great children's hospital here in Houston. We rushed over there and she kept closing her eyes, so my husbans was trying to get her to stay awake. They got us in a room right away, hooked her up to lots of machines and wanted to do chest xrays. 5 hours later, they told us it wasnt pnemonia, which they thought it was and it was just a virus and it had to run its course. No medicine. She was such a trooper, even though she was scared. She tried to convince us she was all better once we got there!

We told her we would get her an early Christmas present for being so brave and she said she wanted a Snow White doll. So we got her Snow White and her Prince! That's my girl!

I am just so thankful she is okay! It was one of the scariest things ever. Seeing your child not be able to breath well is awful!

Just wanted to share our scary day! And yes, that is our precious girl in my siggy! :lovestruc

I'm glad your DD was ok after such a scary morning! Our DD had a cough & runny nose 2 weekends ago. I brought her to the pedi that Mon morning because her breathing was getting more rapid and shallow. Turns out she she had a viral infection. They gave us a nebulizer to help open her airways and it's been a great help, but it was a scary couple of days until we could get her breathing back to normal. I hope your DD recovers quickly.

awww. poor girl. it is so scary to see a little one like that. when ds was about 9 he had a terrible asthma attack. that trip to the ER was the most frightning thing i ever went through. it was like he was suffocating. and he was begging for help the whole way. scary
glad your dd is ok! she deserves lots of extras right now!!!

Glad your littleprincess: is ok.

That is how her breathing was. Very shallow and rapid. Enough to scare the crap out of us! They said it just has to run its course and didnt give us anything though.

Sounds like RAD to me - we've been to the ER for it, before my wonderful pediatrician gave me an extra script of chewable oral steroids to keep in the house. My twins have viral induced asthma, with rapid shallow breathing, and their chests hurt. We've had a nebulizer since they were babies, so we can give treatments at home, and now also use an inhaler with the aerochamber. It used to be very scary - actually, still is, because it comes on so suddenly. Hope she feels better!

Thank you!

I'm sorry they didn't give you anything to help. Our pedi did one treatment in the office and DD's oxygen levels went up a bit and her breathing got a little better after just that first treatment. We noticed a big difference after just 3 treatments. The pedi said the official diagnosis was bronchiolitis.

I had terrible Asthma as a child and my parents told me it sounded like what I used to do with asthma attacks. We asked why she would say her tummy hurt and they said it was more than likely because she was taking in so much air that it was making her stomach bloat and making it hurt.

They hooked her finger up to something to check the oxygen levels - which I had no idea they could do it that way - and it was in the high 80's and low 90's, which they said wasnt too bad, but it should have been in the high 90's. You learn something new every day!

Thank GOD! Hearing your story has put things in perspective for me today.

It wouldn't hurt to get her an appointment with an allergy and asthma specialist to have her checked out. It does sound like an asthma attack.

Our kids all have had bad croup attacks and they are VERY scary, DS14 has ended up in the hospital because of croup. I had it as a child and also ended up in the hospital with it so at least I knew what to do.

I hope she is feeling better--oh and keep an eye on her energy level. We had DS14 into the ER for what I was positive was pneumonia and they said no. We took him to our dr the next day and he had spots in BOTH lungs.

Awwwww!!! :guilty:

That *is* scary.

My (now 18 y/o) son - I remember coming home from work. I was a bartender, and got home maybe 3am ish. I always would walk into their room and check on them, before I went to bed. He had, had a cold, but my mom said he seemed to be doing okay.

He (still!) liked to sleep naked, so I could see his chest moving and it would cave in like - just CAVE IN really deep and these teeny inhalations. It scared me just looking at him.

I woke him up and took him to the ER immediately. His blood oxygen level was so low, and they ended up admitting him. He spent 2 days in the Hospital, with pneumonia, as well - and then had a HUGE coughing fit, and coughed up what almost looked like a tic-tac. It was an itty bitty hard mucus plug, but as soon as he coughed that up - his breathing improved like this *snap*.

Scary scary scary. I remember leaving the room a few times, and just sobbing. I don't think I'd ever been so scared, up until that point. :sad2:

Thank goodness your baby got a proper diagnosis.
