What do you think of these spelling words for a 7yo.
Speedwell, America, Pilgrim, because, Squanto, Plymouth, worship, church, England Thanksgiving and more..(15 all together)
This plus 5 sentances with these words and more in it!!

My dd is having so much trouble in spelling this year. I think this is a lot and the words seem above a 2nd grade level. Maybe I'm just not up onto what they are learning today. What do you think?

I wish DS had words like that!! He's getting things like - the, there, were. The boy is bored!!

When I taught 2nd grade I often gave words like Thanksgiving, pilgrim, etc, but not all the same week. I'd give one or two each week in Nov. Usually the words were "extra credit" - except for the top reading group. I customized my lists by reading level.

When I got my degree popular wisdom had it that spelling didn't even begin until 2nd grade...spelling words should be a year behind words they can read.

So yes, I think the words are too hard...but then as I tell my own children, I went to school in the "Dark Ages."

And Mermaid02 - The spelling books that we used always gave a set of homonyms each week. It's actually helpful for the students to learn them as a set so that they won't mix them up later. I don't think, though, that 'they're' 'there' & 'their' were until 3rd grade. (I taught 2nd & 3rd in a combined class.)

Yes those are pretty hard for a second grader. My dd is in the "spelling advanced program" and those are the kind of words she does but that is because she can already spell the regular words.

So having some trouble seems reasonable. ::yes::

Well, it's been a long time since my daughter was in 2nd grade, but even if those words are hard, what's wrong with that? If the words were easy, what would be the point of trying to get the kids to learn them. I'm not trying to be mean but my GF is a school teacher and so many of the students seem to be so illiterate and they still get passed on to the next grade.

Yes, I can take the words if it was built up. Half her class is having trouble. The teacher is a wonderful teacher and pushes her students. She teaches very well.

My 7yo dd went from 1st grade class where teacher didn't even believe in homework to lots of homework every night. The words from what I see are a bit advanced for a normal second grade class. You can push kids but their is such thing as pushing them too hard. DD7 is getting to point now where she hates homework and studying.. she used to love homework. I just think it's all a bit over her head.

I am also the mom of a 2nd grader who came from a 'No Homework' first grade classroom.

These words seem just about on par with what DS is doing a little challenging, but not too bad for him. And this is a kid who was in Title 1 remdial reading for the first quarter of last year, so he is not way above his grade level.

We have good luck with DS writing each word out 5 or 6 times, and then mini quizzes each night.

Good Luck

I have to admit, they are tough words, but also rather appropriate for this time of year.. However, with that said, I have to add that they would most likely have been given as "challenge words" in my daughters class. Last week, she came home with the word, "spinnaker"! LOL

I have two 7yr olds in first grade now (October birthday). I was talking to a neighbor who's daughter is 3 months older but in the 2nd grade. She said her DD is loaded with homework and is having trouble keeping up but her best friend also has a second grader and his teacher (at the same school) gives hardly no home work. It must vary by teacher.

With standardized testing now the work has changed since we were in school; in MA anyway the first test is in 4th grade and they have to be prepared. There's also a lot of pressure on the schools who didn't score well to improve. I was shocked at what my kids were doing in kindergarten last year - basically learning to read. This year it's more intense with a fair amount of homework. After talking to this other parent last week and another of a third grader I've been working more closely with DS at home so he doesn't fall behind next year.

I have to remember as a kid I loved spelling and found it easy. I can see my DD is like me but DS isn't into it as much. He'll be more of a challenge but I hope we can balance it out so he develops a love of reading and spelling and not see them as a chore. Sometimes in the car we'll play simple spelling games for fun. I was proud of the report cards they both brought home last week, they are both trying hard and that's the best I can hope for. Good luck.

Does she even know what that is??!?!?

Snowangel- What school district are you in?
We are in the Lewisville school district in Flower Mound.
My DD's best subject is spelling. She is in 2nd grade as well and has a 103 average. It sure is a lot different than when we were in kids Huh?
My DM is a recently retired 3rd grade teacher and she said DD is learning things she taught in late 3rd grade.
I used to think I could help her w/ her homework until the 6th grade. I am definitely revising that daily.

They may be challening for a second grader. I had a parent conference this week with my DD's teacher (she is a second grader) and I asked him to add a few challenge words to her spelling. The words she has are very basic and way too easy for her. She was getting more difficult spelling words last year in first grade (of course that teacher has been around 30 years and her teacher this year is new). I think there's nothing wrong with a challenge unless you feel it is too much then I would ask the teacher about it. :D

My DS spelling words are about the same as those. His spelling words are broken down to 10 weekly words, 5 challenging words and 1 challenging challenge word. Last weeks word were

cover, like, wake, act, kind, come, bake, work, sick, lack

The challenging words are whistle, music, third, voice, daughter

The challenging challenge word was Des Moines

The challenge words are optional, we have our son attempt each word. He is a very good speller and usually doesn't miss any.;)

If I remember correctly, those are some of the words by boys had in second grade. Though some of them may have been challenge words.

The class had a spelling test every Monday. Fifteen words were on the test. If all fifteen were correct then they were only tested on five challenge words on Friday.

My dd started out the first quarter of 2nd with words like "like, line". Then she got put into the advanced spelling group and has words like "campaign, succeed". YIKES, isn't there any middle ground???

I teach the after school program for 2nd graders at a local elementary school and those words are on par with (heck some of them are the same as) words my students have had recently.

My students LOVE spelling...and they're pretty good at it.
