Currently thinking about renting a confirmed reservation in March through dreams unlimited - I just did the math and it works out to be $28/point. I'm very new to this but am I way overpaying?

Of course in comparison to rack rate, it's a great deal. And price per night works out to just a little more than what I'm willing to pay for hotel/airbnb. I'm also having a huge case of FOMO - this is possibly the last trip before buckling down for baby #2 and it would be nice to have some happy memories to get me through the all-day nausea, midnight pukes, carb restriction, relentless joint pain, *** labor, is-this-blood-clot-giant-or-normal? sleepless nights, cluster feeding, witching hour...all the joys of pregnancy and the newborn stage.

My spouse thinks I should just book it so he can stop hearing me talk about it, ha. But I will also talk about it incessantly if I think I've way overpaid. And I know this is not the last trip FoReVeR...there will come a day again when we're ready for the big family Disney trip.

It seems pretty high priced. See if you can make an offer at $20/point. Most of those rental companies pay a finite amount to the owner of the points, which doesn't change regardless of how much the rental companies charge per point.

Without the details is hard to know. You might be overpaying based on how the rental market regularly value the points. But if the dates are hard to book with not much availability, it might be ok.

But at the end of the day, what matters is the cash value. You mentioned you’re saving vs it. That’s the only thing that matters. You only have two options. Are you really overpaying if you pick the one that’ll cost you less?

The answer is "yes and no." Yes, you are paying more than you would have if you were renting per-point rather than renting a confirmed reservation, and in that sense you are over-paying. No you are not over-paying, because you are saving significant money vs. rack rate.

Before making a final decision, it would be worth checking the current "Spring Offer". It is not obvious, but that offer does cover March with discounts up to 20%. You might not be getting your first choice of resort, but with the discount you might be getting a deal that is much more comparable to that of the point rental on a room that fits your needs. Plus, renting from Disney gives you much better cancellation terms and more frequent housekeeping (which is being resumed every night or every other night, depending on resort category).

If that's the timeframe you can go and you can't find anything else for less then no, you're paying less than other possibilities.

Could you have paid less with a lot more advance notice? Most likely but that isn't a factor in the evaluation now.

The questions seem to be - is it costing me more to go than I want to pay? (only you can answer that) And can I find something similar or identical for less. (that could take some luck or searching. A discount from Disney, a different resort, off site or finding a lower priced confirmed reservation for that exact time and location which is the least likely).

What resort and what's the room type?
AKL savannah view studio, any time between March 17 - mid April. The confirmed reservation I'm looking at is 60 points for $1680.

My alternative is a non-disney trip to Orlando to enjoy the weather :)

If mid-April includes 4/16-4/19, the Spring discount I posted above can get you those nights in a Savannah view in Jambo for a few dollars less than that. Rent directly from Disney, cancel without penalty up to five days before check-in, and get housekeeping daily.

Don't need Savannah view, or can live with a Moderate? Much much less.

There are a lot of very very nice resorts in Orlando that cost much less than $550/night.

Never mind, I found the reservation. I personally think that $28 per point is high and I rent my points out!

Edited, there is a ton of availabity at SSR and OKW for your dates as of right now. There are also a couple of resorts with a 2-3 nights. I would pop over to the Rent/Trade Board and find someone with points to rent and save some money.

This website will help you with approximate availability: https://tools.dvcvacations.com/points-calculator

I've been so wrapped up in the confirmed reservations that I FORGOT to back check the direct disney price. Thanks for pointing this out and the cancellation perks are a good reason too.

Thanks all for taking the time to respond, your feedback has been immensely helpful. Was hoping to do a non-park trip, and just hang out on the balcony and watch the animals for a couple days. I took a look at the April dates that were suggested but just found out tonight that we may have family coming into town those days and the week before tax day= insanity.

Will put this idea back on to the bucket list for now but have enjoyed floating the possibility :)

Just remember that those reservations are usually completely nonrefundable, and are very difficult if impossible to trip insure. You are taking on a lot more risk by renting points then booking a cash stay.
