Does anyone have a 28" Skyway Hard sided bag they checked with American Airlines baggage?
I got a great "Cyber Monday" deal in my cart but I'm second guessing myself wondering if it's too big. The checked bag we currently own is 26" including the wheels. Reading everything online I know I can't exceed 62" or we will get hit with an "over sized bag fee". I looked over the weekend and that ole 26" is falling apart. Our goal is to only have one checked bag next year so thought this would be good but what if we get to the airport and have to pay the "oversized luggage" fee. The dimensions states:
  • Overall Dimensions: 22 Width/Inches, 13 Depth/Inches, 31 Height/Inches
  • Case Dimensions: 12.5 Depth/Inches, 20 Width/Inches, 28 Height/Inches
It also has a 2 1/2" expandable section but I have no clue if the dimensions above include it totally expanded or not. Thoughts?

In reality by overall dimensions it is oversized at 65 inches. Depending on agent they could measure and charge you the fee. You have to decide if it’s worth the fee- I have seen agents measure bags a few times. Is the great deal worth the risk of paying more for the oversize bag?

I purchased new bags last year and bought the smaller size because we didn’t want to risk- especially on overseas trips and foreign airlines.

I can't help with AA, we have two Skyway 28" we got from JCP a year ago. We had no issues on Delta & United to/from MCO and to Disneyland before.. We did expand both of ours on our trip back from MCO, again no issues.

Thank you so much for the info. I looked up both Delta and United Specifications and they both also state 62" so I think I will be good. The sale ends today so I think I will go ahead and get it. Thanks again!

Thank you so much for your thoughts, that is what I think as well but when I kept looking there is also a 24" and DH told me this morning to get both the 28" and the 24" and since we live near our (very small) airport I might run up there sometime between getting them and we leave to ask them to measure it so I know for sure which to pack. DH also pointed out that we do alot of car trips and he would much rather have one bigger one then one smaller and one larger. So hey, why not....I'll take DH up on the luggage as part of my Christmas present and enjoy both! Thank you for your input!

I don't think that would help...
A) I think it will come down to a specific clerk whether they want to hit you with the fee, even at your airport.
B) Even if the clerk at your airport says "yes, that's fine", when you're going through a different airport on the way home, they may be sticklers for the policy.

That being said, I agree you are PROBABLY fine.

Well Karma got the best of me on waiting to make the purchase and when I went to get them both yesterday the 28" was sold out. I think it was meant for the best, so I just got the deal in the 24" one and I'm sure will be happy that I did once it arrives. But you all are correct and I thank you for your input. If I would have gotten then 28" my luck it would have been measured as an oversized bag AND by it being 4" bigger then then 24" it could have very easily gotten above the 50 lbs quicker!

I’ve never ever had a checked bag measured. Where the issue comes is weight. It can be really easy to go over 50 pounds with a large suitcase.
I have. A few times. Mine have always been just fine.

I have also seen it happen to others. Some were okay. Some were not. Those who were not had to go to the desk before they were allowed to board. And they did not get on with the luggage that was pulled.

really for CHCECKED bags? I’ve certainly had
My carryon measured but never a checked bag.

I pack my 28" fairly light and it's always right up against that 50lb limit. I don't have that same concern with either my 24" or 26" hardsides.
My Samsonite 28 works out to about 64" total, I've flown with it quite a few times on Delta and SW and they've never measured it, only weighed it.

I just checked our two large luggage and one is definitely over. the limit you stated. However we have never had any issues in using it on Delta for both domestic and international flights. I have never seen an agent check the dimensions for checked luggage. I think an exception would be if one of your flights involve a prop plane or a small regional jet.

I think in general they are mostly interested in the 50lb weight limit as that is easily checked by the scale where you place your luggage during check-in and the size of of carry on luggage.

I think the dimension thing is for people living in the Caribbean and other areas. Flying to the US to visit friends or vacation and buying hard goods in boxes to fly home with. Sometimes these hard goods are cheaper to buy in the States than their home country.
