  25. The Informant! -- saw it and thought Matt Damon was excellent but didn't really enjoy the movie

I've only seen a handful of those, but there are some that I really want to see.

I hated Inglorious Basterds. I almost fell asleep twice and just wanted to leave! Loved Star Trek and didn't think that I would. Pleasantly surprised. Julie and Julia was great. Up made me cry too much. I bought DH District 9 for Christmas and he really liked it. I watched the first 5 minutes and was bored.

I really want to see Fantastic Mr. Fox. It was one of my favorite books when I was younger and the previews all look so good! 500 Days of Summer is in my Netflix queue. I would like to see Avatar as well.

One that is not on the list that should be is Sherlock Holmes. DH and I saw it yesterday and it was really good!

I agree about Sherlock Holmes. I saw it on Christmas day and absolutely loved it.

And, I'm guessing that EW didn't want to list two Disney animations but The Princess and the Frog might have been the best movie I've seen all year.

Julie/Julia...good movie and the ONLY one I seen on this list.;)

I am a colossal movie fan and see an uncountable number each year, love 'em! Love 'em at home on our projector and love 'em in the theaters with popcorn!

1. Up in the Air --
2. Avatar -- Eh, was cool visually but they didn't bother with the story, not worth $30

3. The Hurt Locker --
4. Precious -- looks fascinating it's on my netflix list
5. Inglourious Basterds -- not sure if I'll see it or not
6. Invictus --- never heard of it
7. An Education -- have it on my netflix list
8. Up -- wonderful
9. A Serious Man---
10. The Messenger---
11. Julie & Julia -- Eh, sort of bland
12. A Single Man---
13. Crazy Heart---
14. The Blind Side---
15. The Last Station---
16. Nine -- no interest at all
17. Star Trek -- Loved everything about it especially all the new talent, totally worth the $30

18. District 9 -- very thought provoking from a moral standpoint
19. Fantastic Mr Fox--- no interest, but I have it on Netflix list for kids
20. The Lovely Bones---
21. (500) Days of Summer - it's sitting on my counter
22. It's Complicated
23. The Young Victoria
24. Bright Star
25. The Informant! --

Where is Sherlock Holmes? Guy Ritchie's work is always a treat and I loved it with American actors. Very cool!

I saw tons of movies this year both in the theaters and on DVD and liked many but they aren't here. Just goes to show how out of touch Hollywood is with the masses. It's all about being king makers and nothing about talent. This is why Rotten Tomatoes has SOME influence but I will totally ignore the critics if someone I really like is involved in a film, same goes in the oppositre direction for unsavory content. Also, when will they get that if one person wants to see a family film they will sell 4 tickets but adult films with cussing (Pelham 123) will only get 2 tickets sold? Seriously, what is with the language? It adds nothing but prohibits me from bringing my 2 kids who would otherwise been ok with so many films... foolish.

I've only seen:

Up
Star Trek
It's Complicated

I liked them all, but enjoyed It's Complicated the most. If I had to choose amongst them, It's Complicated would definitely get my vote.

I've seen the first half of Up and Julie and Julia. I really need to watch the rest of both of them, as they were both good.

I have not seen very many because my husband and I do not enjoy the same type of movie.

I have seen Avatar, Star Trek, 500 Days of Summer, It's Complicated and Inglorious Basterds.

We may go see Up in the Air later today. I can't decide between that or a second viewing of Avatar, which I loved.

Up in the Air -- Good but not as good as I expected it to be
Avatar -- thought the battle scene was too long but overall liked it a lot
The Hurt Locker --
Precious --
Inglourious Basterds -- very violent but interesting and compelling.
Invictus -- will see soon
An Education --
Up -- saw it and loved it
A Serious Man
The Messenger
Julie & Julia -- saw it and loved it
A Single Man
Crazy Heart
The Blind Side -- trying to talk myself into it -- sounds so sappy
The Last Station
Nine -- not on the level of Chicago
Star Trek -- everyone else in my family went but I skipped it
District 9 -- fascinating movie
Fantastic Mr Fox -- fun adult cartoon
The Lovely Bones -- I've read the book and can't decide if I really want to see it
(500) Days of Summer --
It's Complicated
The Young Victoria
Bright Star
The Informant! --

I've only seen three of these --

I want to see The Lovely Bones which is on the list, but it isn't even out yet.

I seem to be the only person so far that saw Bright Star. I shouldn't have gone, but it was on at AMC Pleasure Island in October and it was too hot to be outside. It falls under my usual "will not see" category. Those are films that are very violent (some exceptions, Inglorious Basterds had redeeming qualities), extremely jumpy or tense (Hurt Locker), depict children hurt or dying (Lovely Bones), or just too sad (The Messenger, Precious). Bright Star was well done and well acted, but made me a soggy, sobbing mess.

I see a lot of movies too... I think EW's list is based on what they think will be represented at the Oscars in some way, not necessarily the movies they liked best.
As for the swearing, I'd be more hesitant with my (hypothetical) kids seeing violence than hearing the language but that's obviously just a personal comfort thing. I don't know that Pelham 123 was really meant for kids (although I really enjoyed it). Steven King listed it as one of his best of 2009 in his EW column.

Just in case anyone cares, here is his list:

10. 2012
9. Fantastic Mr Fox
8. The Taking of Pelham 123
7. Law Abiding Citizen
6. District 9
5. The Reader (he notes that although the movie was released in 2008, his list is printed in December and he hadn't seen it to include it last year)
4. Disgrace
3. The Road
2. The Last House on the Left
1. The Hurt Locker
