25 movies to see before Oscar night -- which ones have you seen?

Ok, back to comment on Nine. I loved it! The lady I went with thought it only OK. I think she didn't care for the infidelity and some of the overtly sexual music and dance.

And Mr. King, The Last House on the Left? Really????? Yuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LuvOrlando -- Your comment about Sherlock Holmes having American actors was :confused3. Jude Law and Rachel McAdams are NOT Americans.

I seem to be the only person so far that saw Bright Star. I shouldn't have gone, but it was on at AMC Pleasure Island in October and it was too hot to be outside. It falls under my usual "will not see" category. Those are films that are very violent (some exceptions, Inglorious Basterds had redeeming qualities), extremely jumpy or tense (Hurt Locker), depict children hurt or dying (Lovely Bones), or just too sad (The Messenger, Precious). Bright Star was well done and well acted, but made me a soggy, sobbing mess.

Wow, I thought I was the only one who'd seen it. Bright Star was so good! I'm waiting anxiously for it to come out on DVD. :lovestruc

The Informant!

I saw:
2. Avatar- I LOVED this movie; complete surprise to me
8. Up- This was a really great PIXAR film, it was very dark, and I liked that sense of compassion the darkness caused.
17. Star Trek - I went to see it mostly for Chris Pine, and ended up loving this (we now have the Blu-Ray, and I've watched it about 5 times)

I haven't seen any of them--we rarely go to movies any more. I don't know why. :confused3

Fantastic Mr. Fox is really excellent! My husband and I laughed a lot harder than our young kids did (though they enjoyed it too)--it was just SO creative and clever and George Clooney who is not usually a favorite of mine was fabulous as Mr. Fox. I'm sad that this one didn't do better at the box office.

Bright Star
The Informant! -- want to see it!

I think (500) Days of Summer has potential for best original screenplay.

Up in the Air -- looks great, can't wait to see it
Avatar -- looks incredibly stupid and I will definitely not be seeing it. Not my type of movie.
The Hurt Locker
Precious -- heard great things, would be willing to see it
Inglourious Basterds -- loved it up until the end. I have a problem with movies that distort history, especially to THAT degree
Invictus
An Education
Up -- The Princess and the Frog was better
A Serious Man
The Messenger
Julie & Julia
A Single Man
Crazy Heart
The Blind Side-- heard great things
The Last Station
Nine -- musical numbers were strong but character development was weak. It was hard to understand why Daniel Day Lewis was so tortured
Star Trek -- thought it was great
District 9 -- didn't like it
Fantastic Mr Fox
The Lovely Bones-- I thought this got terrible reviews
(500) Days of Summer
It's Complicated
The Young Victoria
Bright Star
The Informant!

Just copied and pasted from the list, except I'll put my comments by them:

Up in the Air -- no interest
Avatar -- really no interest
The Hurt Locker -- still not sure what this is all about
Precious -- REALLY want to see this in the theatre!
Inglourious Basterds -- looks dumb- no interested
Invictus -- no interest
An Education -- haven't really heard much about this movie- except recently with all the Oscar buzz.
Up -- just watched the DVD last week. After watching it- I think it MUST win for best original screenplay or at least nominated
A Serious Man- not sure if I have heard of this one
The Messenger- ditto
Julie & Julia -- no interest
A Single Man -- possibly interested, only really to see the boy from "About a Boy" all grown up!
Crazy Heart- no interest
The Blind Side- no interest
The Last Station- never heard of it
Nine -- no interest
Star Trek -- my parents rented the DVD and loved it- I didn't watch it but caught bit parts here and there. Didn't interest me.
District 9 -- not really interested, but heard great things, so maybe?
Fantastic Mr Fox-- no interest
The Lovely Bones-- looks kind of good. might want to see it.
(500) Days of Summer -- LOVED it! But kind of bias, since JGL is like my favorite actor and I've been following his work since he's been little. Finally he's being recognized as a great actor!
It's Complicated-- no interest
The Young Victoria-- never heard of it
Bright Star-- never heard of it
The Informant! -- no interest.

OK, there's my comments. As you can see most of these movies I have no interest in seeing.

Please tell me where you found (500) Days of Summer for $4!? I assume you mean own and not rented? If you mean, rented, then nevermind!

We go to the movies fairly often yet I have only seen two on that list.

Please tell me where you found (500) Days of Summer for $4!? I assume you mean own and not rented? If you mean, rented, then nevermind!

I got it confused with another movie, sorry. :o My sister bought a few previously viewed DVDs on sale at Blockbuster for $4.

Avatar- saw in 3D, loved it, visually stunning and just an enjoyable movie
The Hurt Locker- movie of the year, Renner puts on performance of a lifetime. Can't recommend this movie enough
Precious- hated it for certain reasons, uncomfortable movie but worth seeing
Inglourious Basterds- loved it, was my movie of the year til I saw The Hurt Locker. Tarantino at his best.
An Education- massive crush on the female lead, was good.
Up- everyone here has seen it, classic pixar.
The Blind Side- I enjoyed it, not oscar worthy though IMO.
District 9- Story is good, the lack of Hollywood influence is better. Sci Fi isn't my type though.
(500) Days of Summer- basically the ultimate date movie that actually is a good movie.
The Young Victoria- I don't know if I'm more surprised I saw this or that I enjoyed it.
Bright Star- another what did I get myself into movie. Got dragged into seeing this one and it wasn't bad but not my type at all.

Guess I'm not much into watching oscar contender movies....

Only one I've seen on that list was Star Trek.

1. Up in the Air -- I don't do drama. Or Clooney
2. Avatar -- Big effects...'splosions! CGI! THIS is my type of film. Fabulous!

5. Inglourious Basterds -- Fun! Gotta love the Tarantino.
6. Invictus -- Don't do drama
7. An Education -- I don't believe I've heard of this.
8. Up -- FANTASTIC!
9. A Serious Man ???
10. The Messenger ???
11. Julie & Julia -- Barf. Not my type of movie. Streep? Yuck.
12. A Single Man ???
13. Crazy Heart ???
14. The Blind Side- Sandra Bullock...the kiss of death. No thanks
15. The Last Station ???
16. Nine -- I don't do musicals either.
17. Star Trek -- Best film of the year (maybe number two behind Iron Man)
18. District 9 -- Neil Blomkamp is my new hero. Fantastic film!
19. Fantastic Mr Fox -- Haven't seen it but might rent.
20. The Lovely Bones-- No thanks.
21. (500) Days of Summer -- Nope. Joseph Gordon Levitt will always be "Cobra Commander" to me now.

25. The Informant! -- Rentable.
