We had an incident in our neighborhood where some kids were playing around with BB guns and one of them was shot. The bullet caused a spinal cord injury. Thank God he was not paralyzed. The kids had no idea that the guns could be that damaging.

IMO, if you shoot, be prepared to injure or even kill somebody if the BB hits the wrong place. Don't shoot the person unless you are willing to shoot them with a normal gun.

....honestly even if it were a high powered BB gun I think you'd just piss off any intruder by shooting them with a bunch of BBs

Have you or anyone you know ever been shot with a BB gun?

Would being shot repeatedly with a BB gun be painful enough to cause an intruder to "back off"?

I know it's an odd question, but I would like to hear your answers..

C. Ann, are you packing heat at the lake now??:rotfl:

I'm sure a BB gun hurts, but it wouldn't be painful enough to cause someone to run as long as they knew that's all you had and they were intent on robbing/hurting you. If they really wanted to get in, a BB gun wouldn't really be a strong enough deterrent, in my opinion. They could easily overpower you before you'd fire more than a half dozen BBs at them. Then all bets would be off, I'm afraid.

Far better to get a small handgun - as long as you know how to safely use it.

Looking back sometimes I wasn't the brightest kid on the block, so yes we used to have bb gun fights. Crazy to think someone was never seriously ever hurt. It stings but wont stop anyone in their tracks. The pump-up type guns were the best, we used to have a 3 pump limit ;-)

I did have to go to the emergency room once to get a BB out of the heel of my foot, but nothing life threatening....

First off, yes, I've been shot with a bb gun, but only by a pump action air rifle. Took a couple in the shoulder and thigh.

You have to be ridiculously surgical with a bb gun to do any significant damage. But, that's not to say you can't do any damage at all. With a CO2 bb gun, a hit in the throat from <10 feet out will slow someone down although it would feel like the largest bee sting in the history of this world.

But, if you're depending on it to slow down an intruder, it'll make them upset if nothing else. Not to mention, if you're shooting them with a bb gun, that indicates that you won't have anything "stronger" in the house.

If it's intruders you're worried about, the best small gun to get is a 380. It's a pistol designed for self defense. If you have little experience with weapons, then a 38 revolver would do (just point and shoot) and it will leave a significant hole where flesh should be from less than 30 yards out. Both can be considered "girl" guns.

We could go deeper, but I don't think it's appropriate for DISboards to discuss such a thing.

My brother shot me with a BB Gun more than one time. this way many years ago so they may have changed but it more like a bee sting more than anything. I think getting shot with a paint ball gun hurt more to be honest!

I know 2 people who've been shot by BB guns and they both had to have surgery. One was when I was a kid, so close to 30 years ago. The BB got lodged in his arm. The other was shot in the eye, so yeah, that wasn't good.

I have a friend and her son was shooting his BB gun in their backyard. The BB bounced off of something and hit him in the eye, blinding him in that eye. He was about 16 at the time.
