...........................

This happened to one of our dogs a few years ago. He showed no symptoms of anything being wrong but one day he simply refused to eat and could not walk without losing balance. Since he had had seizures for YEARS before this (controlled by medications) they thought it was due to those and took him to the vet just to be safe. Turns out he had cancer in his liver, kidneys, and intestines. They put him to sleep that day because there was no way he would survive it and he would only have been in pain.

Thanks for all of the condolences.. I think I have finally convinced DD that the "what if's" wouldn't have mattered in this case - by showing her the responses here..

She thanks you as well..

Hugs to everyone else who has been through this.. :grouphug:

I am very sorry for your loss and I feel your DD's pain....

Your DD story sounds exactly like my story with my Nala back in May.... she was diabetic for a little over 2 years.. everyday was great with her.... one morning I woke up to her throwing up. So I checked her blood sugar right away and it was low, so I gave her some kayro syrup to make it come up but she would not eat... so I took her to the vet and my vet ran some blood tests and eventually told me that she had "fatty liver disease" and she was going to need a feeding tube in order to live but she would be in constant pain... I just could not bring myself to letting my girl suffer anymore so I made the hardest decision of my life....

I am a nurse and I knew what needed to be done, I was with my girl to the end.... I miss her so much...

So to answer your question the vet says it comes on suddenly and it almost always happens in cats with diabetes..it has to do with the elevated blood sugars and when the pancreas starts to fail (what causes diabetes).. then the liver becomes effected..

I pray for you and your DD

(thanks for letting me share my story)

I never thought of that.. Could be possible.. You know how it is though.. DD is going through the "why's" and "what if's", and the "did I do something wrongs".. :sad2:

As for the decision - it was heart wrenching to watch.. I was sitting right next to her, hugging her for dear life while she made the call.. Even the vet was trying to comfort her over the phone.. His card today was really sweet.. I've never read anything so sincere in all of my life.. He's a good vet..
I am quite sure your DD did nothing wrong. I am quite sure she very lovingly cared for that cat. But everything in nature has its time. While it seems as if the cat's time came quickly, it may have been slowly, and unnoticably, building up to that point.

Please tell her for me that I can remember with perfect clarity the day we had to put our beloved Ted down. It was, by far, the worst day of my life to date. While I have learned to put it in its proper "place" there are still moments when thinking of that day can bring me to tears. I comfort myself with the fact that he knew he was loved, and we kept our "promise" to him that we wouldn't let him suffer. We saw the first "signs" of suffering about 5-7 days before we put him down. I truly do think my vet was right in her statement about animals being stoic due to some throwback to their wild days.

Please give your DD many hugs for me, another pet "Mom" and tell her that her kitty and my puppy are having a swell time in Heaven right now, just waiting for us to come (hopefully many years from now).

My favorite cat ever just died 3 weeks ago from a sudden onset liver disease. We spent sooooo much money in the 6 or so weeks she was sick. She seemed to bounce back during Christmas and even the vets were calling her the miracle cat. Then, one day she wouldn't eat and 2 days later she was gone.

They never found the cause. They told me it is one of the mystery things that sometimes happens with cats.:guilty: I'm still really sad.

:grouphug: for your daughter!

Thanks again to all of you for sharing your personal stories as I know how painful it must be for you to re-live those moments..:sad1:

I'm glad kitty didn't have to suffer and could go quickly and peacefully.. Now if we could just be as kind to humans.......:sad2:

my cat binx got diagnosed with liver disease last year a few days before my wedding. We did the feeding tube my father took care of him while i was onmy honeymoon. I still have my binx but he was young only 4 and not diabetic. I am sorry for your dd's loss. Kittie mommies love their babies and they are hard to let go

I am so sorry for the loss of your cat.......we lost ours last February....he was 18 and we rescued him when he was about 6 months old....we are very gratefull for the long time that we had him, but it was so heartbreaking when we had to put him to sleep.......3 adults crying like bababies. That is the hard thing when you have pets, their life span isn't long enough for us.....but we loved them anyway!!!!!

I can't help you with your question, sorry.
