...........................

I don't have any answer's for you - but I'm so sorry for your family's loss. I actually have tears in my eyes. So sad! My baby cat (well he is almost 2) got really sick in August as I was leaving for a vacation and DH was in Afghanistan. Luckily food has caused his condition to get better, but it was a long road. I know I was so scared for his life when it happend.

So sorry - HUGS!

C. Ann -

I'm so sorry.

agnes!

:grouphug: to you all for your loss. And it is a very real loss. Your poor DD. :(

To answer your question:

Do we really know if the cat suddenly developed a fatal liver disease? Could it have been brewing? I recall, when our Ted was sick, our vet saying that animals are very "stoic", don't like to show weakness...I guess it's a throwback to when they were in the wild and they couldn't be weak...only the strong survive and all that stuff.

So my point is, maybe the cat was developing the liver condition but was trying really hard not to show it until it just couldn't fight it anymore.

My dog did that...really, only his last week was he really lethargic and acting sick.

The kitty was very lucky to have a Mommy who would do the hard thing to not let the kitty suffer.

With our lst cat - she was always fine. One day I came home from work and she didn't seem herself, would walk a little then just lie down, seem not to be breathing right. The next day I called the vet and made an appointment, took her in and he found out she had cancer in her lungs, chest. He told me there really wasn't anything we could do for her.

My DH was at school for the AF, it was really his cat, so he came home for the night. I told him I can't take her back to the vet, it would be too hard. The vet gave her a shot to breath a little better, she had such a rough night, she couldn't walk. DH did get to say bye to her.

This all happen within a day, she just went down hill and so fast, she never showed any signs of anything being wrong.

So sorry for your DD loss

I'm so sorry. The poster who said animals are very stoic is absolutely correct, especially in cats. You daughter mad the right (tough) decision.

I will let you know that I don't think the plastic had anything to do with it - I had a male cat who would scarf down a bread bag, sandwich bag, plastic wrap and anything else he could get to and he lived to be 22.

I never thought of that.. Could be possible.. You know how it is though.. DD is going through the "why's" and "what if's", and the "did I do something wrongs".. :sad2:

As for the decision - it was heart wrenching to watch.. I was sitting right next to her, hugging her for dear life while she made the call.. Even the vet was trying to comfort her over the phone.. His card today was really sweet.. I've never read anything so sincere in all of my life.. He's a good vet..

Very sorry to hear about your daughter's cat.

Was it hepatic lipidosis ("fatty liver")? This is common in cats (including diabetic cats) but is treatable with aggressive management. These cats can make a full recovery.

No.. Whatever it was, it was incurable (or maybe the term I actually should be using is "terminal") - no question about it.. This is why DD had her DH's cousin (also a vet) call and speak to the vet treating the cat - to be certain of the diagnosis and the test results..

Our cat Mittens died of a liver disease. When she was three years old, she got sick. It seemed to come on very suddenly. One day she seemed fine, the next day she did not. The vet decided to keep her at his office. She wouldn't eat, so he had to tube her. This went on for several days. He did a bunch of different tests and treatments. In the end, Mittens died. The vet asked if he could do an autopsy because he didn't really understand what had happened. It turned out that her liver was encased in fat. It was something very rare and is always fatal. It was not caused by anything we did and there was nothing we could have done to save her.

Our 12 year old cat died within weeks of being "off" a bit. An ultrasound showed a large liver tumor that had probably been there for a while but caused no symptoms at all. She suddenly stopped eating and within a week was so sick that we had her euthanized. So, yes, this does happen in is quite common in older cats.
Sorry for your loss...it's very hard.

My heart goes out to you and your family. Take comfort in the fact that this cat had a good home and people that loved him. It is alway hard to say goodby.

Really sorry for your daughter's loss (and yours as well). It's so incredibly tough losing our beloved pets. Our 12 year old Airedale finally succumbed to chronic kidney failure after a courageous battle of 16 months. We had our vet help him on his way last Saturday. It was the toughest thing I've ever had to do. I've had friends lose pets recently and you think you know what to expect until your pet is the one who passes. It's just really, really tough. Again, my condolences.

I'm so sorry for your family's loss and send :grouphug:. We just went through this heartbreaking experience with our DD and family right before the holidays, as they had to have their 12 yo lab euthanized, so I truly feel your pain. :sad1:

Same thing happened to my kitty this week.:sad1:

I just wanted to send you, your daughter and granddaughter my sincere condolences. I don't have a cat so I don't understand their illnesses. But, I am an animal lover and lost my sweet little girl dog a few months ago, so I do understand your pain. :grouphug:

We did have a cat that had a tumour in her liver. She had been losing weight but she was nearly 18, so as stoic as she was, some of the symptoms were masked by this (she had been quite fat most of her life, and losing the weight actually perked her up quite a bit). She suddenly started to lose her balance, didn't eat, etc. so we took her to our regular vet. This was on a Friday. He found a large tumour in her liver. Apparently, when there is advanced disease in the liver of any type, the toxins start to affect the rest of the body, including the brain.

Since she was primarily my brother's cat and he was in the middle of law exams, my mother decided to hold off on having her euthanized. Bad idea! She deteriorated quickly from that point, and I can tell you I never want to see an animal suffer like that. I had flashbacks about it for weeks. We finally had her put down on Monday morning.

So, this is what your daughter avoided doing to her cat. Sure, it had only been not quite 72 hours since we had found out that she had cancer, but this is the end result for cats with diseased livers.

Your daughter did the right thing.
