As a new member of DVC I was curious as to what everyone thinks Disney will do when our contracts are up in 2042. The properties will still be there so will they just renovate and resell them for another 40-50 years? If so do you think they would offer existing owners a chance to nenew at a discounted rate?

I think if DIsney feels they can make money doing it they will offer some type of renewal to existing members.

It depends on a lot of factors, including what building costs would be in 2042, what it would cost to possibly renovate/fully rehab the resorts to whatever the "norms" are for amenities in 2042, whether the concept of "timeshares" is still popular in 2042. I really don't think Disney know for sure what they plan to do.

I recently read on another thread that the expected life of a Disney hotel was about 50 years. Some people seemed to feel that the buildings would be torn down and rebuilt - whether as DVC resorts or something else they didn't know.

the Polyn is 35 years old - it is not going to be worn down in 15 years....

I think it depends upon the economy and if tons of people are still coming to WDW.

if they are - I believe that Disney will take back it and start to rent them out to WDW guests.

if not - then I think that Disney might longer the program until at least 2054 (when SSR would also close)

we are paying the maintence fees (and all costs associated with it) for the DVC resorts. Disney will kept them up. So they should be in pretty good shape in 2042....

the reason the big makeover for the Polyn is no matter what they did people were still complaining about the mold and mildew smell.....

so you take it down to the bare walls and try again....this time with stuff to stop the mold and mildew that didn't exist in 70's.... but some people are still complainting (makes you wonder....)

Actually, I think it makes sense that they would be doing major renovations at places like the Poly and the Contemporary. They are, as spiceycat said, about 35 years old. So definitely time for some upgrading!! And a major renovation this year would probably see them through another 15 or so years. I still think, if what I remember reading on that other post was correct, that after 50 years they would do replacement renovations. I'm not implying that they would "tear down the Poly" and it would be gone forever, but I could easily see them tearing down parts of a resort and building new construction - or even "tearing down" a hotel and rebuilding it, essentially not taking any reservations for it for a certain amount of time.

Oh, well, who knows????

I'll be approaching 90 in 2042, renewing for another 40 years will probably not make sense for me! :rotfl2: Sorry! I couldn't resist.

In 2042 90 will be the new 60.

I wonder if the average age of the DVC owner has been increasing as time as gone on? Maybe they'll put in a DVC retirement home!

It is my opinion that they will not offer extensions to current members. I won't go into specifics again on this thread but a search should give you previous thoughts I've postsed on the subject.
