2021 Goals

I am getting ready to set my goals for the coming year! I am actually excitied by it as I seem to be able to focus more each year on what is important to us (retirement planning, vacations, and getting things organized) and the easiest way to accomplish it. I like using the SMART Goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely) method for goal planning. It allows me to ask the who, what, where, when, why, and how to what we want to do. Although saving money for various projects, trips, and such seems to be the most important now we will have others to accomplish as well. I have divided my goals into catagories and then further divided them into specific actionable items (It is how I can make it work in my mind).

I hope a bunch of people want to join in and keep it updated regularly for encouragement (wether it is weekly, monthly, or quarterly). I like weekly myself for the accountability aspect but each person is different and do what works best for you.

Again I have posted lots of goals to accomplish but based on the past couple of years I like to have a bigger and specific list to work on to keep me much more focused on the bigger picture of accomplishments.

Now for the list of 2021 goals with some explantions/reasonings:

Financial

WDW Vacation Fund 50/week
0 / 2600
We love our WDW vacations!

Cruise Fund
0 / 6500
Booked a cruise for Aug 2022, trying to cash flow the cost of it from current busdget before the end of 2021

DVC Fund
0 / 2500
Would like to purchase but only if we have at least half the cost for the down payment (saved 2500 last year) so still a few more years to go before we will consider it.

House Fund
0 / 3000
Try to have this cash on hand for various small projects/repairs/modifications around the house

Corvette fund
0 / 2000
I have always wanted a corvette since I was about 10 years old so a couple of years ago I started to save for my dream car (nice used newer model. When the time comes I will need about 35,000 (currently have 7,000 saved towards it) A long way to go, so we shall see!

Roth
0 / 2000
This is in addition to our pension plan and 403B contributions. Just a little something extra for later on.

New Car Fund
0 / 1000
We tend to buy a new car about every 10 years so I like to be able to have about 10,000 for the down payment (which is about half the cost of what we typically buy.

Eat out three times per month or less
0 / 36
We have really cut this down over the last several years!

Cut Discretionary Spending 20%
We tracked all of our spending last year, almost every dollar! This year we are going to use that spread sheet to find some true savings to try and fund that cruise and maybe some other things as well

Find $100 / month in “free” money
Jan
Feb
March
April
May
June
July
Aug
Sept
Oct
Nov
Dec
Although this was not a goal last year I did make "free" money from selling things (March - Dec) on ebay, craigslist, facebook, and bottle returns that other family members don's want to do! Made almost 2,000 dollars

Run annual credit report
Usually complete this about the time I file our tax returns to check on things

Life

Read 40 Books
0 / 40
As I have given up some of my time sucks in life I have rediscovered my love of reading!

Less Procrastination (if it takes 15 minutes or less to do, just get it done!)
0 / 52
Last year I set out to slow down my procrastination by doing 2 items a month and blew that away, this year I am lookking at 1 per week as a minimum

Clean up and keep up to date primary email account (google)

Clean up and keep up to date secondary email account (msn)

Clean up twitter account and decrease the number of “unneeded” followings

Eamils and social media accounts are so easy to let get out of control and then just ignore the mess so going to take the bull by the horns and fix it

Professional

Take 8 free on-line classes
0 / 8
Need to keep up my professional development hours

Keep work email in box below 300 emails
I have over 6,000 emails in my work email box!

Adventure

Spend a mini vacation someplace new (in addition to our yearly WDW vacation)
We like to try and do a mini vacation of some sort between WDW vacations

Health

Lose 30 lbs
0 / 30
Lost 56 pounds (goal was 30) last year and feel so much better for it. Would like to lose another 30 to put me in really good shape

Spend more time outdoors
0 / 156 hours (3 hours/week average)

Keep kitchen counter and table cleaned off
0 / 220 days
This simple act helped to keep the house cleaner last year so I upped the number of days by 40. Let's see what happens!

House

Declutter 500 items
0 / 500
I removed almost 1000 items from the house last year hoping to do another 500+ this year. The more we get rid of the more we seem to enjoy being home thus less eating out or other spendy things.

The above list of house projects need to be completed but I need two things to do it (Time and Money) I may have one but not the other at any given point, especially as we are trying to cash flow these projects!

That's an impressive list. Nice work being so organized! I'm actually working on my goals for the year, trying to keep things attainable and realistic. We have a 2 week half Disney/half Philadelphia trip to celebrate our youngest daughter's birthday and my cousin's wedding at the end of May, so I'm in the process of planning that now. I'm working on paying down debt while mostly cash flowing that trip.

I need to get my list written out, organized, and set and then I'll come back and add mine as well!

Alright, @comicguy

I see what you did and I like it! I love me a good list, so I'll use your format and post my own:

Financial

Braces payments
0 / 1628.50
Would like to pay off ASAP

Pay off final CC with balance (0% through Oct. 2021)
0 / 6420.79
The goal of being closer to debt free

Purchase new mattress
0 / 2000
Ours is old and worn and just needs to be replaced and I'd like better sleep

House Fund
0 / 2000
Try to have this cash on hand for various small projects/repairs/modifications around the house (absolutely stealing this idea @comicguy )

Roth
0 / 2000
This is in addition to my pension plan. Aiming low on this, just using my raise that I’ll be receiving for the year.

Eat out three times per month or less
0 / 36
I need to watch the pizzas and “why not just order from the place down the street”

Spend Christmas somewhere else than home
0/ $2000
This year has made this decision easier. But not at the expense of going into debt.

Sell my 1963 VW Bug
This hurts a little, but I don’t have the time to work on her and my body is all “nope” anyways.

Declutter 500 items

I could put this in financial, but it’s in my dining room

@comicguy - your organization and progress is inspiring to follow!

My list is in progress but definitely want to be more intentional about working towards goals this year. Once the list is figured out, I'll come back and post.

Okay... Here it goes... This might be a work in progress as we move through the year... I tried to keep things in perspective, and attainable for me to do...

Financial

DH and I had a 5 year plan, to pay down/ and pay off some things and get us to the next step, we are on track... Sept 2022 is our Goal Date
Then Covid happened, and international travel stopped, so we decided once we realize that we were not going to Japan as planned. So we decided to take the money and use it on the plan to get us to the next step earlier, So our new date in April/May 2022...
In talking we want to try this year to move the date to Jan 2022... So that's our goal..

DH works is essential services and we were very lucky. We are very Thankful!

The stock just split and the company give matching shares, so even with the drop in price with the extra shares we only saw a small dip, and the stock is coming up again quickly so we are back to the number before the split... So that is wonderful... hoping that the market will continue to stay solid...

Goal - keep chipping away at the plan... to get the goal reached earlier..

Professional

I am a stay at home wife, while I don't have a job out side the home... In the past I have had a on-line Ebay business, some sewing side jobs and a Antique booth, and did very well with all of them.. so I am looking to get back to really getting my sewing business up and running on line somewhere maybe Etsy, and some type of on-line business maybe Ebay or Poshmark...

I was all set to go in January of last year. Life got in the way for sure... I had to take care of my family,... so all this has been on the back burner since January of last year... I spent all day yesterday going through what I had, and project that I had started, and I have a pretty good amount of things all most finished...

January - 1/9 - Finishing completing old projects- 1/15
1/9 - New Projects working - 10 purchased material

So my goal is to up and selling on Feb 1st...

My goal is to clear 1,000 to 2,000 dollars a month
... which is about what I was making before so I am using this as the number for this year...
and using half of it for chipping away at the plan, and the other for travel...

Travel/Adventure

DH and I talked about this year and what we want to do as far as vacations... with all this not knowing about the vaccine and how travel internationally is going to be handled - We decided to do 2 - 1 week vacations - and the rest long weekends... DH has 5 weeks so we have to use it or he will lose it...

We have pretty good credit with Delta from our cancelled trip to Japan... so I think if we are careful, we might be able to get 2 round trips for both week longs... Goal 2,000 for both week longs on air-fare. so zero out of pocket..

Until we decided where we are going I don't have a budget number for the rest of the vacation trips... Looking at what we spent last year on the 2 different week long trip.. I'm going to say roughly 5,000 .... so I will have to update on this

Saving for Paris in 2022 -

Health

DH and I both started a Intermittent fasting and low carb diet - really a life style change last year.. even with everything that was going on we somehow both managed to lose weight! and both of us are feeling better and sleeping better... We are in a test group with our Doctor so, we are going the healthier route, while slower... We have kept the weight off... In December we sorta got off track, and last night I put us back on track.. Goal to stay on track all year...

For me I have some serious lower back issues, so I will continuing with my medical massages monthly... I was referred to her through my doctor who also see her... I can not tell you how much this has improved my life...

Goal - Getting back to daily stretching morning and before bed, and increasing the AM routine...

Personal growth ( edited in 1/9/2021)_

Reading - I spend alot of time reading, I love it... Add I read whatever, romance to cookbooks, thrillers to biographies. So my goal is 60 books this year...
1/60

Learning new language - I learned enough French for a vacation in 2018, to get by, ... My new goal is continuing learning and practicing to work towards more conversational French. ⚜

Household

This is my domain... so it will have some financial aspects in the mix...

Goals - for Grocery and household needs /
Prepare and Shop with a list -
Every 2 weeks at Aldi
Once Monthly at Wal-mart
Publix for BoGo's weekly.
Quarterly to BJ's warehouse...

Goals - Back to meal planning for 2 weeks at a time - I was doing this but once Covid hit, and people started hoarding it became impossible to do this... Today I started this back today...

The 2 above go hand in hand... so I try to keep with seasonal fruits and veggies, look at the sale flyers before shopping. Keeping the pantry well stocked helps with the overall cost.

Goal - 500.00 to 600.00 overall monthly - except for months that quarterly warehouse shopping comes up.

January -
💖Meal planning completed for January 1 - 16th
Aldi - 1.) 142.00 2.)
Pubix - Week 1.) 26.00 / Week 2.) 38.00 / Week 3.) 0 / Week 4.) 0 / Week 5.) 0 /
Wal-mart - Monthly - 55.00
BJ's - 182.00 - got everything on my list except TP and 1 other item, so this will send me back to Wal-mart for sure before the end of the month.

Looking ahead for Birthdays, and Anniversary gifts - We cut down in the last few years on all the gift giving outside the immediate family, So DD and her family, and my parents...that's it. Goal around 1,000 for the year...
January - as of 1/9/2021 - 28.00

For spending for DH and I - we take a long weekend somewhere for our gift to each other...

We did so much around the house on the weekends when the lock-down was going on, we really don't have any big projects to do...
Goal - keep up with projects as the come up..and maintain everything as needed.

The one project we need to deal with is I need to go through all the totes in the garage, and then we need to put up shelving... and paint the garage floor..

I started cleaning out my closets yesterday... Goal -So I can easily hit 300+ hundred items this month...
The another 300+ later in the year at the end of the summer when I go through the closet again..

January - 0/300
June- 0/300

Big Ticket Items ( edited it 1/9/2021)

Washer/ Dryer --- Shhh don't say it out loud... trying to baby them as long as possible.

New Truck - This is a really maybe - no reason to get a new one - depending on how things look at the end of the year...

Saving for 5th wheel - which is why we would need a new truck...

Family

I am the POA for my parents medical and financial, as well as executor of both their wills... So getting my parents some type of plan going forward, is very high on my to do list... They are not wanting to see the big picture, they both had a rough year health wise, Thankfully nothing to do with Covid... They need to make some changes, for alot of reasons mainly - their health, safety, financial needs going forward... It has been very stressful and frustrating when they want to put their head in the sand... I finally did make some head way with them, we have an appointment with their Elder Attorney this month... They need to hear from someone other than me, about what happens when and if one of them has to go to a nursing home, how the spend down works, cost of private care, medicaid once your money is all gone, and how is the other spouse going to live and survive during this time, on their social security alone...

So my Goal - is to get them into a better situation, so when the time comes they will be prepared... Keeping them Safe and Healthy, and Financially healthy with a plan is very important, the goal for me to help them achieve all this in the coming year...

January - Worked on list of questions for elder attorney appointment this month.. researched on line, and spoke to several friends that have dealt with or are dealing with aging parents.. Getting feed back on what they wished that they would have known before it was to late to help their parents, understanding how things like private in home care works and cost, as well as Long term care works after the 100 days of Medicare runs out... Social Security, Medicaid, Pension, and how all this effects the other spouse... it is terrifying... !!!

I wrote out a list today. It is more simple than the others but wanted it to be obtainable.

Financial
1. Pay down $4000.00 in credit cards.
2. Put an additional $500.00 in emergency fund.
3. Buy 1 $25 Disney gift card a week.

Health

1. Lose 25lbs
2.Eat healthier
3. Eat out 1 time a week or less.

Household

1. Get rid of at least 10 items a day on average. This includes things being set aside for a yard sale.
2. Make sure dishes are done at end of night. This is difficult for me because I usually work until 9:30 or 10.
3.Keep kitchen counters cleared off.

Way to Go... Lots done in the first week...

I have some loftier goals this year, but we shall see. These are goals for just my income, aside from DH's who is full time and is able to max out his 401k, puts a lot more into our brokerage, HSA, etc. than I can. I have only worked part time since my first child was born 10 years ago, and only just last year was able to start contributing into my personal IRA again -- for all those years before that, 100% of my paycheck was going to household bills so that DH could max out his accounts since he has company match and so on (meanwhile I am self employed with no benefits). So now that I'm making a little bit more (still part time), I'm trying to go full steam ahead.

Fully Fund 2020 Roth IRA - $6k / $6k DONE 1/8/21
Fully Fund 2021 Roth IRA - $0 / $6k
Invest $3k into children's custodial index funds ($1k per child) - $300 / $3000
Save $3k to go towards lot purchase for future rental unit(s) - 0 / $3000
Save $2k in vacation fund - $300 / $2000
Invest $1k into my separate brokerage account - $400 / $1000
Pay additional $3000 on mortgage principal - 0 / $3000
Make $1500 in extra side hustle income (eBay, Etsy, CL, etc) - $300 / $1500

I didn't add a car savings fund this year as part of my plan involves our 16 year old minivan continuing to kick butt for at least another year. So basically my plan hinges on an old Chrysler transmission not blowing up (that's my line in the sand for willingness to repair). He hasn't let me down yet so I think we'll surpass that year.

House projects:
Replace crappy cheap handrails going up to 2nd floor with nicer real handrails
Replace 1st floor common area laminate with hardwood, move laminate to basement (we had a flood in our fully finished basement in late 2019 and have replaced 80% of the flooring except the main movie room and hallway)
Add roof/covering to portion of back deck
New vanity and floor tile in Master Bath
Touch up paint throughout
Continue regular purging lifestyle (I'm coming for you next, attic)

Personal:
Lose 10lbs of fat
Increase muscle mass
Work out 4x per week
Cut down on sugar

January - 1/9 - Finishing completing old projects- 2/15
1/9 - New Projects working - 10 purchased material - laid out 1 new project

So my goal is to up and selling on Feb 1st...

Update 1/19 not looking good for Feb 1st more March or April for sewing business - due to possibly one of my parents needing some minor surgery, final decision not till the middle of Feb, so I am running back and forth to help them out... which you can't sew in the car on I-4

Poshmark - looking good for the first week in Feb... starting to take pictures, and about ready to put them up on line...

January - So far so good back on track - 1/19 -

For me I have some serious lower back issues, so I will continuing with my medical massages monthly... I was referred to her through my doctor who also see her... I can not tell you how much this has improved my life...

Goal - Getting back to daily stretching morning and before bed, and increasing the AM routine...

Personal growth ( edited in 1/9/2021)_

Reading - I spend alot of time reading, I love it... Add I read whatever, romance to cookbooks, thrillers to biographies. So my goal is 60 books this year...
2/60

Learning new language - I learned enough French for a vacation in 2018, to get by, ... My new goal is continuing learning and practicing to work towards more conversational French. ⚜
January - Spend time listening ( You tube) and repeating while working on my sewing

January -
💖Meal planning - Completed for January 1 - 16th - Completed 16th thru 31st
Aldi - 1.) 142.00 2.) 171.00
Pubix - Week 1.) 26.00 / Week 2.) 38.00 / Week 3.) 0/ Week 4.) 0 / Week 5.) 0 /

1/19 Completed list of questions for Elder Attorney...

Doesn't look like this will work. The area is too small. I'm trying to think of an alternative

What does the area you are trying to tile look like?

What about peel and stick type tile, or faux tin that comes in a roll and you use adhesive?

Maybe you are trying to match up to something existing -- just a thought though.

I have existing tile, but the dishwasher we installed last year was 1/4" too high for the tile and I pried it off. I'm still trying to get my hands on a tile nipper to see if I can finagle the tiny cuts. If not, well...I guess I'll try my hand at painting the area to match as best as possible.

I believe if you have a Lowes nearby they will cut tile for you.
