2016 Olympics: Decision on Friday

I'm in the Chgo burbs. On the one hand, I'd love for it to be here so my kids could experience it. On the other hand, I don't know if the financing will come through as predicted. Latest polling numbers I heard this morning showed 60% of Chicagoans against having the games here. I also wonder if all the shootings here lately will affect the decision.

I think if security from local crime was a huge concern then only Tokyo would be in contention because Rio has tremendous crime problems and Madrid isn't that much better.

I don't know if there is an "inside" hint that we will get it therefore Pres. Obama is going. I do think that his great charm and charisma can only help and will be important since all the other world leaders are going.

Well, I wasn't huffy before. :rolleyes1

Mexico City is North America (but it doesn't change your "no South American city" claim).

:goodvibes

Apparently, we are supposed to want Chicago to win because it benefits Toronto's bid for the Pan Am Games a few years later (which is supposed to be good for Ontario).

Look look! The US education system has failed me!!! :lmao: Wait...wrong thread...

yes, you are right. North America.

But my point is still valid as you said. :goodvibes

I have been to Tokyo and Chicago. I do think that Tokyo can win in the 5th vote vs Chicago. With Pres Obama there, I don't think that he can get the votes from the European IOC members. Brazil is hosting the World Cup in 14, so they will be out by the 2nd vote. Remember, Asia / Aussie has hosted a games every 8 years (00-08). So this would be Tokyo's turn.

Having been to an Olympics, Seoul 88, is something that you never forget.

I do hope that Chicago does get the games, but it is really up to the
Asia/Europe IOC members.

Glad you took it in the sense it was meant (just joking with you - since you were so worried that people would think Mexico belongs to South America and were trying to prevent people pointing out your error).

An important guy is going to talk with the decision makers. The buzz is that he wouldn't be going unless it was to bring the prize back to Chicago.

Good, gives the other cities a better chance.

One thing that I suspect has always helped US Olympic bids is our ethnic diversity and immigrant tradition. For many athletes, participating in the US is the closest that they will come to participating in their home countries. Chicago is legendary for its ethnic Poles and the Mid-West is home to large communities of Latinos, Scandanavians, Arabs, and Eastern Europeans.

I think the biggest advantage that Chicago has going for it is the locations of the Olympic games since 2000.

2000 - Australia
2004 - Greece
2008 - China
2012 - London

Australia, Europe, Asia, Europe.

My guess is that the IOC will award a North American city the games. And while I think it will be a close vote between Rio and Chicago, I'm hoping Chicago gets the Games.

One thing not in their favor is that 1996 it was held in Atlanta--which is North America. If they were to honor a rotation--South America is the only one who hasn't hosted giving the honor to Rio.

It shall be interesting to see what happens.

While I don't think there is a "rotation", I do believe that because of television and advertising dollars, the Games will be held closer to the United States. That's why I think it's between Chicago and Rio.

I like the idea. I live downtown and think it would exciting. Yes, I own a Chicago 2016 tshirt- I am an Olympic geek!

We might have a shot but who knows what will happen. But I do have my fingers crossed.

The rumor is Chicago is going to be picked.

Like someone said the trip wouldn't have been made this late in the game if Chicago wasn't a shoe in.

If it is true the gold for best waste of taxpayer’s money goes to….

.

Today is decision day! The decision will be announced at 12:30 PM Eastern and I will be watching it live.

I caught Olympic fever in Los Angeles in 1984 and I am about to have a relapse! :cool1:

Will the major network's be covering it live or should I tune to CNN or even ESPN? I'm so worrie dmy useless local station is going to trump any live network coverage with their own noon news show/

I hope Chicago wins. I lived there 5 years and really do think it's the best city in America!

We just took our first trip to Chicago in August, and I'm hoping they get the Olympics. DS12 already asked me this morning if we can go. Get this - he said he's willing to give up ALL Disney trips between now and then, and put all that money toward going to the Olympics.

I was caught between :scared1: and :lmao:

CNN covered the announcement for the 2014 Winter Games when no American city was in the running, so I'd be surprised if they did not cover the decision today. You can also watch it from the Chicago 2016 website: www.chicago2016.org

I'm crossing my fingers :goodvibes
How great would it be for the greatest city in the world to host the Olympics? ;)

I think that it's important to remember that if Chicago gets picked, not all of the events will be in Illinois, let alone Chicago. For example, road cycling and mountain biking will be in Madison, WI, training and prelims could be in Indiana...

As a resident of one of the western suburbs, I'm not sure how I feel about it. I think that it would be cool to be able to see an Olympic event. I think that our area will benefit from the tourists since we're very close to one of the major highways going into the city as well as the Burlington Northern train, but I'm not sure how much all of this will end up costing the taxpayers of IL. We're already in a budget crisis as it is cutting social services to the disabled, low-income, needy...

I just hope that if Chicago doesn't get the bid, that everyone behaves in a proper manner. There would be nothing worse than for a crowd at Daley Plaza or Grant Park to be disruptive over the loss of the bid.

I'd rather see Rio win because South America has never hosted the Olympics. Sorry, Chicago residents. I don't have anything against the city of Chicago or against any of you. In fact, Chicago is a city that I've never been to (other than both airports) and would love to visit someday. My roommate is actually originally from Chicago and he would rather not see the Olympics take place there either as much as he loves his birthplace.

Although I would love for Rio to get it, the corruption, crime and safety issues there concern me. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Madrid, the Barcelona games were amazing, so I really think Madrid can pull this off. Funny thing, with all this Rio-Madrid-Chicago talk, Tokyo seems like the underdog... weird.
