It does feel good to get rid of all the "stuff"

What I wrote on Jan. 12:
Our family goal is to give away/sell/throw away 2,000 items this year. We are currently at 359.

.

Here's my update:
We have upped our goal slightly to 2015.

So far we have given away/sold: 1103 items :yay:

Yesterday I found a whole plastic bin full of my work clothes that are 3 sizes too small so I stopped at Goodwill and donated them this morning. That bin was probably moved from spot to spot for years and never opened.

I also gave a friend who still sells at kids consignment sales 45 hangers yesterday so I am feeling like I got something done.

I've got at least 4 boxes of DS's old clothes and toys ready to head to a friends house. I got ride of one garbage bag of stuff this morning so my dining room is starting to look good enough to put a table in. I think it might be time to start shopping for one!

I've got 2 piles of my clothes that Im giving away. I'll feel good once I can finally make time to actually get all of this out of the house.

I also sorted some paperwork and shredded some. Everyone has been doing so good! Very encouraging!!!

That lot of toys from last week finally sold. I swear meeting with people from Craigslist or Facebook can be a comedy of errors sometimes.

I'm late to the game but we just decided to do Disney this year, and I hopped on the boards! I am wanting to destash MAJORLY in our home and hopefully do a garage sale with proceeds going to our trip!

Got rid of a big bag of junk today and I didnt even have to do it, oldest ds cleaned up a little in his room! The donation truck is coming wed. or thurs and so far we have 2 bags of clothes and 1 bag of stuff to give them. I am happy. Slow progress but progress none the less.

20 bags of stuff (clothes, stuffed animals, toys, etc, etc, etc) gone to Purple Heart! I am sure I have a lot more to go! Even though there are only 3 of us, we have a ton of stuff and seem to not let it go. Heck, I still have a ton of unopened boxes from when we moved into our house 10+ years ago.

Dh just left with the backseat of my car loaded down with things for Goodwill. We have been doing a room a day. Yesterday was the kitchen, today when he gets back it will be our bedroom. I can actually see the end of the road! Next aft the big purge, will be a deep clean. I am trying to talk DH into hiring help for that!

Hi, I'm new to the thread. But I wanted to join in.

I'm on a war path to clear out our crap. I just turned 32.

oh dang, forgot to add, we found an entire box of "shred" from like 4 years ago and put our 8 year old to work, he thought it was the best thing ever and has asked me everyday after school if I found anymore

I am 45, and I am still at it! :lmao:

DD (11) enjoys shredding as well. I gave her the job of shredding her grandpa's old checks when we were cleaning out his apartment.

This week it will be the kitchen junk drawers and the hall closet by our front door. Further down the line I think our garage needs a once over again. We are one of very few families on our street that actually park TWO cars in our garage (most park only one, some park none!!!) so we are pretty good at keeping on top of it.

One of DH's must-haves when we bought our house was a 2 car garage. We ALWAYS have enough room for both cars. He cleans things out at least once a year, and I have already promised to get the stuff from my dad's house out of the garage this year.

For all of you that are getting rid of clothes and household items: if you itemize your taxes, go to ItsDeductible through turbo tax to claim your items. It will give you IRS approved deduction amounts for EACH item, which are WAY higher than most of us would believe. For example, a Christmas wreath that I bought for 6.99 about 10 years ago is valued at 9.00. A pair of LEGGINGS is worth 19.00 if in excellent condition. Those numbers can really add up! You can start an account for 2015 and import it next year when it's tax time, or go back and input what you donated last year. And no, I don't work for turbotax, just trying to help out my fellow purgers. :thumbsup2

LOVE itsdeductible! Since I have been using it for a couple of years, I could really see the jump I made in donations in 2014. Having the thrift store a few blocks away helped, but I think this thread had a part in it as well!

Is anyone else participating in 40 bags in 40 days? I signed up again this year. I did well for the first two weeks last year, then abandoned it when my grandmother was admitted to the hospital for an extended stay. The challenge coincides with Lent.

I have elected to get rid of a grocery size bag each day and make it part of my morning routine. It may be trash, something to donate or something to sell. This morning I sorted through newspapers, kid day care papers and coupons. I've got a grocery bag and small shipping box heading to the recycle bin.

Good for you! I started 40 bags, but I see I have written down just 1 bag.

I'm sorry to hear about your dad.

Thanks! He is doing OK. With the recent warm up, I got to bring him his spring jacket and some short sleeve shirts.

We destashed a little to bring some pieces of furniture from my dad's apartment into our home. Then we had to clean because we have an activity in our home every weekend in March - company, 2 friend birthday parties, and the family birthday party. DH has spring break this week, so I will get in my trip to the thrift store. DD purged all of her Monster High dolls and accessories, so I need to get those out.

I spent this evening alternating between catching up on this thread and balancing the checkbook on Quicken. Now I need to see if DD wants to shred some receipts. :rotfl:

I sold my Amish Wooden Bench my mother-in-law bought me 20 years ago. You could never sit on it, it was more decorative than practical. I kept the dogs leash in it and plastic bags. Also sold my corner hutch from our old house. On Monday I am throwing away 4 lounge cushions, in my work dumpster. I have permission to use the dumpster.

Hey all! Seems like things have slowed down, but still some progress being made. I haven't completely fallen away from the declutter train, as I took about 30 minutes to purge and straighten my two bins of sewing supplies last week and managed to get it down to one bin plus one small box.... but life has been so busy! That being said, I have a nice big EMPTY box sitting in my bedroom waiting to be filled! I have an unexpected day off (working tonight which is unusual, but the day is mine until about 2:30), so I plan to go through my drawers and closet. I don't have much "junk" but just too much stuff in general. If I'm not wearing it, it needs to go. My weight has been stable for about 5 years now (lost 90 pounds in 2008/2009) so no need of having multiple sizes and stuff that is too big or too small. I'm going through all of the fall/winter stuff and if I haven't worn it yet this season, then chances are I won't, so out it goes! My goal is to part with at least 10 pieces (other than little stuff like socks) and at least three pairs of shoes.

If there is any time left after that then I will go through a drawer or two in my scrapbooking area.

I'll report back later!......................P

Okay.... 12 clothing items, three pairs of shoes, and one purse GONE from my side of the closet! Plus I pulled out three shirts from DH's side (they were ratty and stained.... he won't miss them). That being said.... I think I have a problem with cardigan sweaters...... even AFTER the purge I have.... 31.....:rolleyes1 I had SIX black cardigans.... different styles, but STILL!! That being said, I do wear or carry a cardigan to work nearly every day from October thru May.... I can never be sure if my classroom will be freezing or hot.

Now I'm going to check out my drawers. I think I cleaned them out last fall, so there probably isn't much to purge, but I'll take a peek.

I've also pulled out all of my scarves.... I will try to decide to keep or purge those as well.... and I will iron the keepers that need it so that they are ready to wear! Some days I want to wear a cute scarf, but I don't always have time to iron them!...............P

Update: Scarves are ironed and hung neatly and one is in the donate box. So that makes 14 items plus 3 pairs of shoes from my side of the closet!

I had a small set-back. DD called yesterday to say she was going to start bring stuff home over Easter Break from college for the summer! She did say her brother (our oldest DS) said she could use part of his storage shed to store things so I hope most of it goes into it!

Well, I am recently unemployed and just finished out the quarter at school (I'm a late in life college student). I basically have a week and a half with NOTHING to do! Almost unheard of! Hubs and kids are in school (except my youngest) and so I have decided to spend the next few days purging my home! So far, I have a garbage bag and a box full of donation stuff. But I still have a lot left to do. I plan to systematically go through the entire house room by room and start getting rid of stuff. I have been a packrat for years and, sadly, my children have inherited my pack rat tendencies. Over the years I have started to realize that I just don't need to hold on to all of this STUFF! Time to get started on simplifying our life and, hopefully, I will have a good handle on things by the time I find a new job and my life gets hectic again!

Today, my plan is to finish purging my son's room. He is only 3 and won't notice too much if his toys thin out a little bit. ;) My girls though.. it is hard to get rid of their stuff because they end up noticing. I have to be sneaky about it! I also tackled a pile of papers I had on the desk because I was sitting here and the pile started to fall over. LOL!

Tomorrow, I will start on MY bedroom! I need to get rid of clothes and shoes as well and go through all that junk I've got stored under the bed!

The next day, I will do the bathroom. It isn't too bad, but I am pretty sure there are some expired meds and stuff up in the cabinets! ;)

Been slowly working through mother in laws stuff that we inherited. Got a call from my dad yesterday. About 2 months ago he had estate sale and got rid of lots of stuff (my mom had passed away in 2014) especially knock knacks and such. Dad is giving me 20 boxes of stuff some attic that was forgotten about. So adding that to stuff to go through. Dad loaded 4 boxes in my car. Went over to friends and dropped off 1 box that had hanging light that she needed and also one of those tabletop fountains. I had called her as soon as I left dads house to see if she could use anything that I had just 'received'. So basically starting the process over.......small bites of an elephant

Did I see the number 31 for how many cardigans you have? You just made me feel a lot better.

For some reason, their things from college was hard for me to handle. They had their own space, living quarters at school and for some reason, when my kids moved their things back home in the summer, my house exploded. A storage shed is an excellent idea.
