To say I have been planning my families first trip for a while is an under statement!! We where booked, reservations made and then had to cancel because we needed a new car unexpectantly.( thank goodness for trip insurance) So that was 3 years ago. I then started looking into a trip for last May but then dh had medical issues and has been home since January. He should be back to work in December.....if all goes well (Please God!!!!) So I want to plan a trip for May 2014 because we really all need a little magic in our life and I really need something wonderful to look forward too:goodvibes Would it be the smart thing money wise.....maybe not but I'm thinking life is to short! In 2015 my ds would be a Disney adult. The trip would be dh and I and our ds11 & ds(almost 8). A family friend is letting us use their rci points so lodging will be $250 for a week:thumbsup2 I am so rambling I know........just need to know if I really should wait. Please be kind its been a hard 8 months:flower3:

i think you put off this trip for too long. If its not going to put you into debt, go for it!

I wouldn't be too concerned about the younger child becoming a Disney "age 10+". The difference in price between a "10+" ticket and a child's tickets is pretty small. We're talking about somewhere in the range of $20 price difference for the 10-day tickets and even less for those tickets with fewer days.

Since you'll be staying offsite, you won't be getting the dining plan. So, you don't need to worry about paying the huge price difference between a child's rate vs. the 10+ rate. You can still order kids' meals for him at QS locations if you want to.

So, if you're thinking about going in 2014 in order to save money by taking an "under 10" vs. "10+", it may not be quite the savings that you're expecting.

Go in 2014 if you can get the money together in time for a trip but don't be too upset if it has to wait until 2015.

I agree with Marionnette. There isn't enough monetary savings between a child & adult so don't let that sway you either way.

If you have the funds to do a May 2014 trip, I would definitely plan to go then only because it's sooner! Is your friend willing to let you use their RCI points in either 2014 or 2015? That may make a difference in your decision if they can only give them to you in 2014.

In just a few short years, your oldest child may be at the age where they think it's "dumb" to travel with their parents (even though they secretly have a blast) so you're really in the sweet spot with their ages where they will have so much fun, be able to ride all of the rides, and not get scared!

If you will have to really pinch pennies to make the trip happen, I would opt for a 2015 trip if you think you can guarantee you will end up going...like, if you plan for a 2015 trip and a major car repair comes up, or a medical emergency happens...can you still save enough to go? You definitely don't want to go into any debt to go on a vacation. If saving up until 2015 will allow you more wiggle room to splurge a little here and there at Disney to really make it a "wow" trip for your family, it may be worth waiting for.

DH and I went in Feb 2012 and we had an amazing time (7 nights). We're talking about going again, taking my parents along with us this time, but not until October/November 2014...it will allow us to stay Deluxe this time around (we stayed Mod last time) and really make it a "wow" trip while still not having to pinch pennies until the trip. Our Feb trip was an impulse decision sort of...we decided to book it in late August and had to budget for a $3,000 trip in Feb. lol

Sharon, our family is in the same boat. We have made plans for our first trip and canceled plans TWICE before and now we are working on the third try LOL If it isn't going to break the bank, I would say go in 2014. I know all too well about needing a little extra magic in your life! If you wait until 2015, the pricing isn't too much more. I have a little boy who is 7 so I have been paying attention to prices as well as we have had tickets for 4 years just unable to use them and I want to keep up to date with the child/adult pricing! I say go with your gut. We are going in September of 2014(Third time WILL be a charm!)

thanks everyone, the rci points can be used either year, and sometimes Disney resorts are offered:thumbsup2 What is making me wonder is ds will make his first communion in May so that is an expense. Also dh will only be back to work for a few months and then taking a vacation. And last but not least my in-laws telling us what they think......so when do parents stop telling their kids what they should do (I'm going to be 44 in 9 days):rotfl: I know we should start saving for the next emergency But wholey moley my hubby and kids and I need some fun.

$250 a week for lodging is incredible. Your friend is offering it now, and may not have the points available in 2015. I say go in 2014, unless the trip is going to be very stressful b/c of the amount of other $ you still will spend (food, tickets, souvenirs, gas).

Just have to add don't feel bad about suspending the trip for the last few years, if you go 2014 your son will be 10 and your daughter 7 years old. Perfect ages! We did our first WDW trip when DS was 9 and DD 6. It was fully and absolutely magical. Our children were the perfect age to ride every ride, walk without asking to be carried, and both still willing to suspend reality and immerse in the magic! We had such an incredible time we decided to go the very next year, when they were exactly the age your children will be, and it was just as wonderful! :thumbsup2
