2013 dates

My answer to your post is out of order and is showing up BEFORE your question - weird.

The transatlatics are normally in the Spring (April/May?) and back in September I think. We cruised out of Barcelona in June, 2007 - got a great deal on the cruise (GTY), but the flights just about killed us. I think the flights to Europe for all 4 of us would be a deal breaker - just too expensive.

But I'm curious to see if the Magic will do new itineraries later in the year - would love a looong Southern Caribbean trip over Thanksgiving or Christmas.

So the Mediterranean trips are throughout the summer then?

I'm one of the ones on here who REALLY wants them to do the Eastern Med cruises, as then there will be TA's.

Even so, CM's have often been the source of rumors with no real knowledge. While I'd like this to be true, I'm not so sure they'd go to Turkey or Istanbul? Maybe I'm wrong. :confused3

The same with mine! I was replying to the post about Istanbul and Turkey, and mine showed up AFTER. Time zone glitch of the DIS strikes again...:rotfl2:

I know it will probably be a few months before they release the 2013 itineraries for the Magic. I am hoping for Greece!:woohoo:

Greece or Italy would be good! I know it's just another rumor, but it has gotten me excited again for a TA. I will be selfish and hope they don't release dates until at least February or later. That way I will have been able to do an on-board booking dummy date to move for a western-bound TA! ;)

For those of you planning on doing a TA cruise, are you also planning on a Mediterranean cruise or just plan to visit the area?

If there is a TA cruise, I'd likely just do the western-bound TA. I'd like to be able to come over several days in advance and visit the area. It all depends on what I can afford after seeing what the cruise costs, and of course airfare. Also, where they are going figures into it. At least I'm going solo, so the airfare is just me. But then again, going solo also figures into how much I'd be willing to do on my own as far as touring.

Of course I'd love to do one of the Eastern med cruises too - but chances are that will be just that too much financially.

We did a back-2-back in 2007 and the transatlantic home was in August. I know since then they have been doing them in September, which is unfortunate for families with kids in school :confused3 We had a terrific time -- 24 days on the ship and lots of great sights. I'd go back to Barcelona in a heartbeat!

My husbands family is from Croatia and and we go every other year and the cheap flights are no longer. We have flown into Milan, Munich. Rental cars made it affordable not anymore. Just the cost of flight to Europe is now over $1100. I really want to do the TA but the air fare is at least $2000 for 2. Hotels are expensive. Currently the Port of St Maarten lists the Magic at the end of Oct. So maybe a TA

Yes, airfare seems daunting! Which is why if they have a TA, it's likely that I wouldn't be able to also do a B2B with Med cruise. Hotel, airfare, food and tour costs would make this pretty expensive to begin with. But for me, this would be one of those once-in-a-lifetime and/or Bucket List types of things.

So some of you would just fly to the port city just to board the ship to take it back west? Are one way fares to Europe a lot cheaper than round trip? Is the goal just to be at sea for as many days as possible then? Are TAs a lot less expensive than other trips of the same duration? Is the TA plus a one way ticket much cheaper than a round trip ticket plus a Med cruise? Just trying to figure out why a TA alone and not coupled with a Med trip would be so desirable.

Well, this year, it wasn't an option. Someone chartered the entire ship for the last med cruise.

There is a whole breed of people for whom a TA is an ultimate adventure. Lots of at sea days, and going across the ocean from one continent to another.

As to airfare, well I think it's varied. If a round-trip were cheaper then people would likely book that and just not use one leg. If the one-way is cheaper, then book that. I know years ago trying to find a one way to anywhere was difficult. Now it's offered more often.

So yes, many book either TA to just go on the TA, and that holds for Eastbound or Westbound. If people can afford it, it makes sense to add a few days to tour the area. Or at least have a day to recover from the long flight!

Doing a TA coupled with a Eastern Med would be incredible! However, for me it's the TA that is most important. If for some reason, I could also afford a B2B with it, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I believe it wasn't an option for the Westbound this year, as someone chartered the ship. That was too bad for those who really had planned to do a B2B!! :scared1: I believe it wasn't done until AFTER people had booked.

Great explanation! That totally clears that up! Thanks! :goodvibes

If they do a canal and a TA I will see the cost and then make a choice. The TA may be cheaper but add in airfare and it seems like it would equal out to the same or less.,

I had researched one way flights once before when we were thinking about a TA. The only airline that had reasonable one way fares at the time was the Irish airline - Aer Lingus I believe. You may want to take a look at their rates.
