2012 Beach and Yacht FAQ ~ March, April and May ~Do Not Post Here-Old Thread

I have updated the Be Our Guest List on Page 1. Please take a moment and make sure you are listed correctly. I haven't removed any of the people who have switched resorts in April.

Thanks for the backup, Mike! You caught a couple of things I had missed! You can unbold anything that is up there now, if you want.

I'll be checking in on the thread sporadically in the next few days, mostly morning or late night- busy week with my youngest son's performances in Bye Bye Birdie and helping out with the PTA Science Fair.

I just posted a thread asking a question about switching.. Your expert opinion would be great.. :thumbsup2

I am no expert! I just play one on the boards...

I have only stayed at the BC twice, never at the Poly (my only other experience onsite was All Star Music)

Regardless of that disclaimer you asked for my opinion so my answer is that my family would decide to stay put for the following reasons:

For my family, the location of BC is the number one reason we picked this resort. Can you believe that it wasn't until AFTER we booked our first stay (on the 4/3 deal in 2009) that we found out about SAB!

I LOVE being able to stroll into EPCOT in the evenings, make a quick trip in for a bite to eat, or having the chance to watch Illuminations solo (my family doesn't care about fireworks) 2-3 times in a week and being back in my room by 9:30

The pool is great, but we really don't use it much during our stay. Maybe 1-2 quick family visits, and I have made some solo night swims. We are hardcore park commandos. We figure we can swim anywhere, but RockNRoller Coaster and Space Mountain are only at Disney.

I would enjoy the opportunity to check out the Luna pool and slide.

The Poly would be my second choice for a Disney trip, mostly for the theming.

Hope that helps. I'll post this over on your other thread, too.

:thumbsup2 thanks for this!

Solo is NOT for me.
~Nannette

I suspect I would feel the same, although before I was married, I did a lot of vacations by myself...never to WDW, but just about anywhere else.

Off to the airport! I will have access to The DIS while down there, if I get a chance I will send some live updates!

Keep spreading the BC/YC cheer around here while I'm gone!

Teena see you Sunday with some PA goodies. My parents are coming to visit us for the day on Sunday so I'll be in the lobby waiting for them - see you then!

Have a great trip!

When I was about 12, my Aunt & Uncle took all my cousins to Disney. We were invited, but my parents didn't want us missing school, so we didn't go. Anyway, I remember seeing their photos and video from the luau at the Poly and I always thought I would love to stay there. Even on our previous trip, when we stopped there to get hubby a coffee one day, I thought I'd love it. One of these days, we'll probably stay there, but it's funny that when I was planning our upcoming Deluxe trip, I was drawn to Y&B instead of the Poly. Hmmm...maybe if we take advantage of the bounceback, we'll have to consider the Poly.

Well said! Just my two cents, but I agree with natebenma 100% for all of the exact reasons she listed. The BC is so much more than just a spectacular pool.

Thank you for this. I called for no other reason I guess but to vent on how upset I was. I am not the average person that goes to Disney. My husband and I choose to go with our son as opposed to spending the money on our house etc because we realize first hand that life is way too short. We have gone through ALot in the past 5 years. ( think multiple lay-offs. Severe money problems and my cancer in 2010.) last yer was our " dream trip" we did everything we wanted. Split stay, ddxp.. It was amazing!!! This year, we decided instead of spending our l" extra" money on something for our house we would spend it on another trip to Disney and this time it was ALL about SAB. So it was so frustrating to get all the information and know that no matter what our trip wasn't going to be what I thought it would be after over 6 months of planning. I believe in signs too.. And I do appreciate the cm going out of her way.. But it still doesn't settle my stomach that I made the right decision..

As you know, we are in the exact same position. We have never stayed at the BC/YC before (or any Epcot area resort), and chose it primarily due to SAB, as we are HUGE pool people and only spend the mornings in the parks. And we are not frequent WDW visitors -- we are looking upon this trip as our last trip for a number of years. It's so difficult when you plan so far in advance, research what is best for your family, have to plan out meals, etc, ridiculously far in advance, and then find out just weeks before you go about something like this (and not from Disney, either, but from here -- THANK YOU, TEENA! Still haven't received a letter...).

We are staying put because everyone in the family agrees it's what we want to do (well, the 5 year old doesn't get a vote :) ). If anyone had felt strongly about moving, we probably would have moved. But, like you, we also chose the resort for the location. We've never stayed around Epcot, and with the ages of my two older children, I thought it would be a cool thing to do. I must admit I did check BWI when I heard this news, but it was full. Not sure what I would have done if there had been rooms available. And I momentarily flirted with the idea of the Swan/Dolphin, but don't feel that can "replace" the BC in any way, shape or form (although would save us a lot of money!).

I'm taking this as a reminder to myself not to expect our vacation to be "perfect." No amount of planning can make it so, and it puts so much stress on the vacation to try to make it as "perfect" as possible. So I'm looking upon this as someone slapping me upside the head and saying, "get over it. Roll with the punches and enjoy all the things left to enjoy." Don't get me wrong -- I still am completely bummed about this SAB closure, but if my family doesn't feel strongly about moving, I think we'll deal just fine at the BC.

Like you, we have been smacked around a bit by life in recent years (heck, as I'm learning more and more, who hasn't?). The last time we were in Disney (two years ago) my youngest daughter had a gastric tube, was on morphine and chemotherapy meds on a daily basis, and was unable to deal with more than a couple of hours in the park at a time (and was often in pain/nauseated when there). Now we are returning for her, so she can enjoy it a bit more after surviving over two years of cancer treatments. It's so hard when you've been through things like you and we have to not put a lot of pressure on your vacation plans to be "just so." We all want to leave the stresses and fears we've been dealing with in our daily lives behind and totally escape. And when part of that "escape" relied on afternoons enjoying SAB, well, the disappointment is huge. The trick is for your family and mine to just redefine our "escapes" now that we are armed with this information (and again, thank goodness we have it -- THANK YOU TEENA! -- because it allows us this time to regroup and figure out how best to work around it). How do you want to redefine it for your family? Can you come up with a BC plan that lessens the emphasis on pool time and compensates for it more with something else the BC can offer (other activities, more Epcot time, etc)? Or is the pool time such an integral part of your escape that it truly would be best for you to stay at the Poly? (Which is a wonderful resort, and fairly convenient to Epcot too). Will DH be unhappy if you stay at the BC, and is it worth it then to switch back?

It's a difficult choice. And made more so because I think families like yours and mine may feel even that much more pressure to make this a fabulous escape. I personally think you can't go wrong at the Poly. And perhaps you can't at the BC either, but you need to make sure that everyone in your family is on board and ready to deal with the SAB partial closure if you switch back.

Good luck with your decision. I'm sure you will have a great vacation regardless!

Thought I'd just chime in here to say that I think of the Poly as our Disney home, and the BC as our Disney "summer" home. Love them both, but since the Poly is where the kids stayed on their first trip, it holds a special place in our hearts. They're both fantastically themed and boast great locations. Both perfect for families!!

And by the way, thanks to all who have chimed in about what else makes the BC/YC special. Your words have been very helpful and comforting to me. Part of me was feeling like a total chump for not switching my family to a different resort, and you all have helped me come more to peace with my decision (can't say I'm totally at peace with it yet, but working on it :) ).

When it comes down to it, staying put at the BC just feels "right." There's no other/better way to explain it.

Thanks!

I LOVE Bye Bye Birdie! I even bought the Dvd for the car so my kids would know what the heck I was talking about!

Good luck with the Science Fair - we're in the middle of our "creativity fair". Ugh - three kids, three different kind of projects (one history, one science, one ILA) - all very detailed specific with tons of rules and regulations! I can't wait until it's done - see this is why I NEED a BC vacation!

If it helps anyone - we've stayed at BC, YC, the Poly and the GF.

BC is hand down our favorite! YC is our second favorite and I guess it's a tie between the Poly and the GF.

We've stayed at YC in late October and didn't do much swimming in SAB, but we still loved being there. We love being able to walk to EPCOT for dinner and the water taxi makes it so easy to get to DHS. We also like walking over to the Boardwalk at night.

Good luck to everyone with their decisions.

Here is a trip report with some amazing photos of the Beach Club by Scott Smith. Go to page 2 and check out the night shot and PM Scott.

I wasn't the one asking about the photos, but thanks for that link. Those are some gorgeous pictures!

For those commenting on the Poly . . . I grew up in FL and we'd go to WDW every year as a kid. This is back when it was only the MK (and the only resorts were the CR and the Poly). We'd visit the Poly and I dreamed of staying there one day (we'd always stay offsite). Well, since I've been going as an adult, not only haven't I stayed there, I have no real desire to. I don't know what it is that turns me off. When we go in June, we're then going to Universal and staying at Royal Pacific Resort, so I figure I'll get my Hawaiian theme fix then.

I had the craziest dreams about the BC last night. Teena was in it (even though I've never met her, lol). In my dream we were upgraded to CL. Ahhhhh! I didn't want to wake up.

I just wanted to send (((hugs))) to all of you making decisions on what to do about the SAB closure. I'm not sure what we'd do in that situation. I'm thinking we'd still stay, but unless faced with that situation, I'm not sure. Good luck with your decisions.

BC is hand down our favorite!

Good luck to everyone with their decisions.

Another ditto this morning! We've stayed at Poly and BC many many times, WL and CSR a few times, and BWI, AKL, Dolphin, CBR and Sports once each. We plan to try CR and GF next year as part of our split stay and we're trying POFQ and YC next month. I often re-arrange the order of my favorites, but BC always remains at the very top of the list. (Today, I'd say Poly is second and BWI is third.)

I mentioned all the reasons we love BC (and our clear decision to stay put at YC next month during the rehab) on page 38 in post #558.

Like Robyn said, good luck to everyone!

Dee, good luck with your busy/fun week! And Happy Science Season - we have science fair tonight!

Oh Wee Annie! I just know you and the gang are going to love the resort! I think everyone in the planning stages suffers from what I call "Too much time to think". We ALL do it before a trip when we have endless hours to contemplate this and that. When you finally get to the World you are going to hit the ground running and all the concerns that loom large now will go by in a blur of busyness and fatigue as you enjoy your trip to the MAX!

I love the way you are concentrating on the positives! The fact that your mermaids will be able to pool hop at the Boardwalk is a rare and golden opportunity, indeed a 2-fer that only occurs during times like this. I can't wait to hear what they think of the scary clown slide. Aside from it's unfortunate esthetics I've heard that ol Penny Wise (and you just know that that's the name that BW CM's have given "It") gives a good ride.

The other thing I'm going to bet a million missing phone books on is that the recreation staff at Storm Along Bay will hold the games at one of the Quiet pools. Having actually played some of the games myself, (while DS was off napping in the room!!) I can attest that they would work out just as well in the quiet pool as they would in Storm Along Bay. Your little one is going to go bananas for those games, trust me.

Don't forget there are also the campfires at night and the beach movies amid the beautiful setting of the Boardwalk/Swolphin/YC/BC area. Another thing that will still be open is the Lazy River, which is my personal favorite. That's not something that is available at any other Disney Hotel. It's not big in a water park sense but it sure is relaxing as you float around in leisurely circles reflecting on all the great things you did that day and will do tomorrow.

As far as your check out day is concerned did you know that the BC/YC has a lovely fitness center?? Personally I can't even think of finding the energy to hit the gym after a long day of running around the parks. The reason I mention it is that if you plan on hitting the pool while you are waiting to go to the airport you can pack a change of clothes and shower and change in the lovely locker rooms at the gym!

I did this my last day and let me tell you after a sweaty morning in the parks during record heat it made me feel human again before I was bused off to the airport. This locker room has lockers where you can store your changing stuff and it has shampoo, conditioner and lotions just like the you found in the rooms. It also has blow dryers, which are essential for us chicks. Did I mention the soft fluffy towels available there?? I wish the gym at home had such nice amenities!

You can also store your change of clothes with bell services and pick them up on the way to the locker room, although if I was coming from the pool that day I would have just plopped them in a locker that morning.

I hope all that helps Annie! There is always going to be something at a resort that is a cause for concern, but with the right attitude and the knowledge of how to deal with the problem, you will find your stay was great in many unexpected ways.

~Marlton Mom
PS. This is for all the lurkers that are reading and wondering how to deal with this pool situation.... feel free to post your questions and we will be happy to help you in a supportive way! :thumbsup2

I am going to call guest services today, in part because of everything that you said. Thanks for helping me feel better about our stay..

Hi BCers!!! Been awhile since I last posted, though I have faithfully been keeping up with all the antics!

I think I was having Disney withdrawal but today I finally paid the deposit for our summer trip!! We will be spending a week at CSR with my sister And her family (her choice... But takes another resort off my list... Someday I will try them all).. Then a week at our favorite BC CL!! I cannot wait!! So can we please be added to the be our guest list... 7/31-8/7...

Now I wait, make a thousand lists and still hope for an AP / room only discount... Wouldn't that be nice!!

Hope to see some of you again this summer...

Not to say it is an "obvious" taxi night but I'd probably either catch the ferry to the CR or bus over to WL and pay the $20 (includes tip) to take the taxi back to BC. Especially that late at night.

Hope you have a great trip.

I would take a taxi in this situation, late at night and resort to resort.

There will be busses right outside of Hoop at the bus stop that goes to the various hotels. These busses start running when the busses at Magic Kingdom are not available.

Thanks for everyone's response on this! I think based on these responses I'm going to play it by ear. if the boats back to MK are still running, I am going to see what works best. If there's a cab right there at the HDD. I might take that. If what Teena says is true, I mean busses outside the HDD to take us back to the Yacht Club? How convenient.

Thank you all!

Cool! Thanks!

Now I can book and cancel with no penalty if I do it within a certain number of days, right, or I can book with dummy dates and then change to other eligible dates can't I?

I've been crossing my fingers for a PIN (with no luck), but doing this did not even occur to me until LMO429 posted the BB question.

Getting all caught up on the thread today....can't believe how far behind I am, and I was just on here over the weekend!

As long as the dates are eligible you can!! :thumbsup2 I did this when I was a guest on my friend's DVC reservation in December. I called guest services from the phone in the room and asked if there was a bounceback offer currently available, because there wasn't one in the room. They confirmed that there was and I booked my original reservation for August. A few weeks ago, I called and changed our dates to September, still using the bounceback offer. A certain CM that we all know and love gave me the original idea when I stopped in at the BC to say "Hi" on that December trip. :)
