2011 Super Goofs

Hi Goofs!

Congrats to my fellow Princesses and congrats Kim! Holy Cow! Three marathons...this year?!?! Wow!

I'm finally back from Disney. We stayed for the entire week after the Princess half, which was nice. It's really easy to look forward to a race when you know there is a whole vacation waiting right behind it! :rotfl: The weather and crowds were great and this trip may have been my favorite one so far.

I ended up finishing in 2:23 which was about 1 minute faster than my first 1/2. I was hoping to do a little better than that, but I can't complain since I did a lot of training indoors on the treadmill. And really, a PR is a PR, right? So, yay! The next time I do a Disney race, though, I think I'd like to take it slow and stop for pictures and all that fun stuff. I get so focused on running that I don't even look around much. I zone out and just end up following the person in front of me, like a lemming. When I reviewed the videos from the Princess half, I really look like I'm on a mission! Looking straight ahead, focused on breathing...I really don't have the appearance of someone having fun. So that's something I'd like to work on.

Next week I start training for the Chicago marathon! I am completely nervous about making the jump from 13.1 miles to 26.2. I've always been involved in sports and activities, but never in a million years thought I'd be able to add "runner" to that list. It's kind of exciting, but scary all the same. I'm really looking forward to putting winter behind me and getting back to running outside all summer long!

Keep up the good work, Goofs!

Congrats to all and all that you have accomplished!

AFM: just got back of an amazing Costa Rica vacation- already have next year booked! I could live there the rest of my life and be so happy....

And now for the burning question.....what kind of Snickers products did you get before, during or after the race?
Leave it to Maura to ask the really important questions! LOL Actually, I can't believe I forgot to include that in my race report, since I was curious about it beforehand.

I got to the expo late, but they were still distributing Kudos with M&Ms as well as Combos. I saw an empty carton of Snickers Marathon Bars and was a bit miffed that I didn't get there in time to grab one, but as it turned out there was one in my race packet. They had the Snickers Marathon Bars at most of the water stops, including one that was very early in the race (mile 2 maybe?), which I found odd. I saw Combos at one of the water stops as well. Oranges, bananas, and Hammer Gels were also available. It was practically a 26.2-mile buffet!

Combos and Snickers Marathon Bars were up for grabs at the finish line along with the usual bagels, oranges and bananas.

Rich, best of luck to you in your "Maniacal quest." Which marathons are you aiming for? Are you going to do 2 within 16 days, 3 in 90 days, or are you shooting for an even higher level status?

Nicky, congratulations on your PR! Best of luck as you begin marathon training. Pretty soon, you will look at step-back weeks in your training schedule and hear yourself saying strange things like "Oh, it's just a 15-miler" without even batting an eye.

I'm planning on doing the Illinois marathon (at UIUC) at the end of April. The next week is the Kalamazoo marathon, here in Michigan, and a couple weeks after that, I would be doing the CRUD trail ultra. It will only qualify me for the basic maniac level though - obviously, I need to schedule some more races! :lmao:

Hi Goofs, just checking in.....

Nicky Congrats on your Princess result and good luck with training for Chicago. That's a long ways away. What do you have planned? And BTW, I run the same way--focus, focus, focus!

Joanne Never been to Costa Rica, but it sounds like the kind of place where you can really get away from it all.

Kim Yum! Although I find that I don't want to spend the mental energy to eat real food during a race. I actually tossed away a piece of chocolate during the Disney full last year because it was just going to be too much to eat (sacrilege).

Rich Wow....I would have to be drugged to run 3 that close together.

AFM... another 20-miler in the books today on nice dry roads with a comfortably overcast temp in the 30's. Cardio-wise it was good, leg-wise-- I felt my adductors and hip flexors most of the way. Just my legs letting me know they are there and WHAT am I doing to them! One more 20-miler left in a couple of weeks. Can't believe my race is just 36 days away! I will be in the last wave start, and should get my number in the next couple of weeks.

Now time for coffee and then grocery shopping.

Maura

Congratulations to all the Princesses! Awesome job:thumbsup2

SAHDad~ Are you running the Kalamazoo? I'll be running the 1/2 that day! (my first 1/2)

As for me: I'm still plowing through my training for the 1/2 in May (sort of in denial that I'm really going to do it) I ran 9 miles today, again, my longest run ever! It wasn't pretty..the out was good, but the return ended up being mostly uphill and into the wind. Which means I walked more than I ran. But, I did it and that's what mattered! And still well within the time requirements for the 1/2.

I'm running the Shamrock Shuffle in Chicago in April and I signed up for the Wine and Dine relay (again).:goodvibes Can't wait!

Hope it is warming up where you are. There were a few flurries flying this morning during my run. BRRRR! But I think I saw 60's in the 8 day forecast:cool1:

Maura - I'm going to try following Galloway's marathon plan, which is 30 weeks (!). I think that it might be difficult to stay focused on a running plan for so long, but it does give me some leeway if I end up missing a day here or there over the summer. I'm also not too sure if I like the way he staggers his long runs either, but I'll have time to play around with it if it doesn't suit my running style.

Woo Hoo- just signed up for the GOOFY!!!!:cheer2:

Good for you Joanne!!

I am very undecided and quite stressed between the Wine and Dine 1/2 relay, the 1/2 in January and all of the other local races I've run the past 2 fall seasons. Don't know what to sign up for, how much $$ I am willing to spend this year on races and how prepared I am going to be for any of them anyways.

Happy Friday Goofs!

Had a 10 mile run yeseterday--long for a midweek run--so I was outdoors. It was still in the 40's when I went and a little windy, but boy did the weather get mice later on!

Bettina Sounds like your training is going well. Congrats on your 9 miler, and appreciate each milestone for the accomplishment that it is. It may be cliched, but the "journey" is definitely worth celebrating just as much as the "destination".

Nicky Wow! 30 weeks has to be the longest plan I have ever heard of. Hope you can find some shorter races to fit with your training schedule to keep you motivated. Good Luck@

Joanne I plan to go Goofy too--for the first (and maybe last) time.

Suzanne Deep breath! They're only races...don't get stressed. Plus there is still a bunch of time to figure it all out.

Shannon Dopey! That's great. Seems like quite a few people will be doing the 5k.

Off to spin class for me.

Maura

Hey Goofs!

I've been absent from the group for a couple of months. Had a hip injury in January and February which forced no running for awhile. Well, the hip is feeling better and I'm getting back on track.

I've decided that this year is my 'fun' running year. I'm going to do the races that are fun and not really worry about time/pace/etc. So with that said, my plan is to run the
  • Utica Boilermaker (free beer afterwards!),
  • The Red Dress Run (5K) - all entrants must wear a red dress (male or female), all proceeds from this run go to the Crime Victims Assistance Center and
  • I plan on signing up for the 2012 WDW Marathon
.
This is a tough one as I don't know how I'm going to get the long runs in during December in the snow in Upstate NY here but if some of you do it. I can do it too!!

I'm looking for one more fun 1/2 marathon, hopefully not too far away from Upstate NY here that might fit in around September/October time frame. Would love to do the Wine/Dine but two trips to FL in one year is just not in the budget for us.

I've been thinking about you, Maura, getting ready for Boston and I'm sure you are going to do awesome! And to all who ran the Princess Races or did the Marathon weekend :cool1: woo hoo to all of you! I'm jealous!

Hope everyone has a safe and healthy training springtime! Hopefully the snow will stop soon here.:sad2: I'm getting tired of it.

Take care!
Jeanne

Jeanne Glad you're feeling better and I love your upcoming races. There have been moments during winter training when I have literally thrown up my hands and yelled at the sky about the weather I was running in. But....when I trained for the Disney full in2010, the weather wasn't as big of an issue. Snow didn't come til later. Of course, I don't live in upstate NY!

As for fall races...seems like a few WISHers are doing Hershey 1/2. That may be a possibility for me. (As opposed to Rock n Roll LA--which happens to be the same weekend as Parent Weekend at USC)

Got my race number for Boston. I am 19418 and in the last wave (of course). Last 20-miler this weekend and then taper. Might do the Martian 1/2 on April 2 (fits my mileage for the LR)--defintely helping out on Thursday & Friday, so Todd if you're reading--I may see you there!

Maura

Jeanne...glad your hip has healed. Welcome back to running.

Maura...that must be so exciting to have your race number. Looking forward to a great report on Boston since that's one race I'll likely never run :-)

AFM...I'm definitely back into a routine. I've managed to run 4-5 days per week (avg about 25 miles) for the last 6 weeks or so. I ran a local 10K a couple of weeks ago and had a PR of 1:04. I'm 99% sure I'm going to sign up for the OKC half which is May 1st. I'm up to 10 miles for LRs so I should be fine. Lots going on in my non-running life. I officially separated from the Air Force on March 1st...I'm now a civilian for the first time in over 12 years. And at the end of May we're moving back to Florida...to Mickey's stomping ground...can't wait!

Hope everyone else is doing great!

Maura Great idea on Hershey! I'll definately look into that one! and Thanks for posting your bib number, we'll all be watching for you!:goodvibes

Shannon Congratulations on your 'retirement' from the service. Good luck on all your new plans! My DH just 'retired' from 24 years of Police service. Hates the 'retired' word as he starts his new job in a couple of weeks. He says retired is for people who don't have to work anymore. (and that's NOT him )

Jeanne...I wish I could say I was retired. Unfortunately I got caught up in a reduction in force...too many officers, so they had force a bunch of us out the door. I had planned in retiring, but it wasn't meant to be...so on to the new plan!

Oh Shannon, I'm sorry. :sad1: We've had two RIFs in my workplace in the last year, lots of friends of mine were effected. My DH was offered a 'buyout' to leave, so that they wouldn't have to RIF. It was a hard decision for him, he wasn't quite ready, but the offer was too good to not take it. So, I"ll tell you the same thing I told him....Make this an opportunity to go in a new direction, or as the words say in the Sound of Music..."Where God closes a door, somewhere he opens a window". Take Care!

Hi goofs! Just stopping by quickly to say hello! I have been extremely busy with two online grad classes that are occupying all of my computer time. I have been checking in and reading what is going on, but have not had time to post. (I should be working now, too...oh, well!) I hope everyone is doing well. Everyone looks like they have lots of races planned! I have a 5k coming up on Mother's Day and then a few local races this summer, but nothing too big. Only 6 more weeks of my classes left! Yippie!

Hi Goofs,

I finished the final 20-miler this morning and now let the taper begin! A nice, albeit cold, morning for a run. Ran my usual long route which goes into a wealthy community and by a beautfiul church, which last Monday was the scene of a movie shoot with George Clooney. Now maybe I should have run long then--nah, I probably would have been aggravated that they had my route blocked off!

Got my Boston runner info in the mail yesterday. So it's definitely getting to feel more real.

Anyway, stretching, shower and chocolate milk are done--although not in that order. Time to read or nap (although I should go grocery shopping)

Hope everyone has a great upcoming week. It's nearly April!

Maura
