For the past 3 years DH and I have saved every single coin or paper money we've found....January to January is our time span.

This years total is....*drum roll please*

$70.66

Beats the first two years!! 2009 was $44.03 and 2010 was $22.83.
This is not money found in the couch or in the washer but found on the street. It's kinda hard to fathom there's so much money just laying around on the ground isn't it?

So far for this year we already have 12 cents! LOL

Does anyone else save found money?
I may start saving couch and washer money too...I keep finding little piles in those locations. :p

Yes, I do, and I find a lot. I put it all in my two kids' bank accounts and they now have $170 each. We opened each account with $25; TD America (then Commerce) matched that. Then, the kids get $10 each summer from the bank's reading program. The rest of the money has been found on the ground, vending machines, etc. in the past 3-4 years. Not bad for a 7 and 5 year old...

That amount does not include a $20 bill I found, as well as random dollar bills. I'm usually looking at the ground when I walk, lol!

Oh me too for sure. I've been like that since I was a little girl...my dad used to tease me about all the stuff I'd find. I just think he was jealous because it was always cool stuff! LOL LOL

I can't wait to hear what you've got saved when they're 18! Please DO post back. :)

The kids always argued over found money (on the ground). You know... "I saw it first", or "he already found a nickel".

So hubby came up with a good idea. Every single coin (or bill if so lucky) anyone finds goes into our Mickey popcorn bucket. ;)

I also toss loose change I have (or umm.. "find" in my husband's pockets :rotfl:) in there, etc. At the end of each month, I total it up and put it in our Disney savings account before it gets spent.

I should try this! I have seen people literaly throw their change in the street after they get if from the cashier. I should have so much money!

dh finds money on sidewalks, streets, store floors, amusement parks..... he says people rarely look down. He will pick up every coin and finds hidden coins I could never see. Coins in mud, under leaves, in trash. He is so weird.
lol
When dd was about 7, he had her bring a mask to the local water park wave pool. After every wave session, she went diving for cash. I guess men and boys stash cash in their pockets, then the pockets turn inside out from the waves. She would find about $10 in change on weekdays and $20 on weekend days. The workers didn't mind, they wouldn't even save it, it went into a large vacuum system and was tossed with the dirt. Several times she found ten and twenty dollar bills and handed those in to lost and found. If no one claimed them, she got to keep them. Those were great $$ days!
We had season passes, so she had herself quite the little business.

Now at 17, she's a lifeguard and swim instructor at the YMCA, I think the wave pool at 7 had something to do with that. ;)

dh had a second job delivering pizzas for many years before I met him and after we were married. We put some of the down payment on our house with $7,000 in quarters from tips he had saved over several years. I couldn't believe it, but it does add up!

:cheer2: That is great!! NOW Im going to start watching the grounds! lol This could motivate me to get my behind walking when the snow melts!

Not only found money but found coupons as well. DH laughed at me this past week because I picked up a coupon in the Home Depot parking lot. It was a catalina from Meijer for $20 off a new prescription. DH was just at the doctor the week before Christmas and got the new prescriptions for his blood pressure medication. After I asked him if he'd pass up a $20 bill laying in the street, he admitted that I wasn't so crazy after all. ;)

Tell the truth - who picks up pennies. I do!

Of course! They are the most found coin, then probably dimes and quarters. Nickels are hard to come by. My family used to go looking for money every Sunday at the local high school when I was a kid. Sometimes I walk around the mall and find about a dollar. I pick up other things PP have mentioned, like coupons, too. So far, I think I'm only at a penny this year, though.

If the kids are not with me, I do! :goodvibes Hey, I'm not about to turn down free money. It all adds up. ;)

As a kid I found I had great luck late winter / early spring. I use to find lots of money (especially quarters!) walking to school & home as the snow melted and ice thawed.

What a fun idea. I am definitely going to start doing this as well. I can't wait to see at the end of the year how much money I have found!!

My family is always picking up dropped coins! The kids find them and stick them in my purse while saying "for Disneyworld!" Truth is that we put half in each of their savings accounts. :cool1:

My husband's family used to combine and save all the money they found during the year in some container. On New Year's Day they would count the money and share it evenly with th people there. Another New Years Day tradition they had was to eat chololate in the shape of a horse shoe. I was told the combination was supposed to guarantee good luck and riches thru the year.

That is a great story! It's true that little amounts add up.

Not the ones on tails! :scared1:

Give face-down pennies a kick, so they land face-up. Then, you can pick them up!
*chuckles*

I pick up coins all the time in parking lots and near vending machines. I never thought to save it for the year - I usually put it in my change purse.

$77 - WOW!

My brother worked his way through school with two jobs. One was at a restaurant, so he brought home tips in crumbled (and usually, damp) bills and coins. I remember him IRONING the bills lightly to smooth them out so he didn't get dirty looks when he spent them. (Which was rare - my brother is a miser and a very good saver!)

I have a found money story...

A few days before Christmas, I went to the grocery store and as I was leaving, there was a Salvation Army bell ringer playing the violin. I had no change or bills and I felt so bad as I was walking by him. As soon as I got past him I found a nickel on the ground. I took it to him and said, "I was just feeling so bad that I didn't have anything to give you and then I found this nickel on the ground!" He replied, "It's a Christmas miracle!"

I do this too especially at Disneyworld! People tend to cram money on their pockets and when they take their phone, pass, etc. out then it falls out.
I usually find atleast $1 or $2 a day in change there. But I've hit the jackpot several times. Found a $50 bill just laying in the middle of the sidewalk coming out of Fronteirland. Found 2 $20 bills wadded together like trash right by a trash can in DTD and a $10 bill blown against the fence in Fantasyland. All of them were very easy to spot and people all around..but I must be the only one that walks around staring at the ground for money! :lmao:

I totally do! I'm vertically challenged, so being nearer to the ground I find coins that my family members miss. My DD15, however, will scold me for picking up coins off the ground. "That money is filthy and you don't know where its been!!". I add the coins to my piggy bank. My granddad used to talk several walks a day when he retired and lived in a resort town - he kept all of the change he found in a jar on his dresser - he refused to spend the money and as a child I could never understand that. He liked to watch his found money "grow" and used it as a lesson about carelessness and waste.
