2010 Tri Thread

Jen I like the sound of that drill you did in swimming, where you all swim together. I'm just in Masters swimming and we don't do anything like that. I wish we did, I bet it helps alot!

BigEeyore I also have a Zoot tri top and shorts! Actually 2 outfits, I had to have a new one for this season ;)

Richard, thanks for the report. I was cringing when you talked about riding into the wind. I can't believe how tough that is.

Great job!

Hoosmi- I keep looking at the Newtons....how are they for people with crazy high arches? Thanks for the review!!

Hey kids-

Did 5 miles at lunch (and then ate a peanut butter and honey sandwich at my desk!)

nov02mom- hard call on the Newtons. I have kind of high arches. I tried to pay attention to my arches in my run. As far as I can tell, the insole doesn't touch your arch, so no real support, but my arches don't hurt at all. I bought the racer style that is more lightweight (and $20 cheaper:rolleyes1)- the others may have more support. :confused3 Further complicating my review, I started running a little over 3 years ago with a new baby and extra weight and then "ran" through another pregnancy and afterwards, and again extra weight... I've finally lost a good chunk of the weight and am not as rigid about my schedule (hmmm... if it hurts, maybe I should take a rest day instead of crippling myself!), so the Newtons might have just come at the right time!

Richard- I was just teasing you about the alarms. The one race where I decided to only set my phone alarm, it was on vibrate and I overslept!! I still made it one time, but I'm back to setting every alarm I can find.

Jen - You are a machine! Glad you are getting better at takin gcare of yourself, though!:goodvibes

I must admit, I chuckled at the "alarms" comment too. Only because I NEVR set less than 2 before races when I travel.

Had not heard of Newtons before. Glad I don't have PF and don't need them. :scared1: Am thrilled that they seem to work on PF, though. that just sounds so horrible.

Jen - No offense taken!! I know of lots who set multiple alarms for event day. Considering what I paid, I am going to make sure I get there on time.

BigEeyore & ghoulishgirl: What kind of Zoot top did you get? Do you just get a top/tank, or do you get the "support top" that looks more like a sports bra? I found a 2pc Speedo that I really like for the swim and thought I would throw on a tri-top for the extra support in the bike/run.
Or is that overkill? I tell you - I hate it when the girls move AT ALL when I'm running... ;)

mgsmom- I bought a zoot tri top for my first tri. I wore a sports bra under it even though it has the lining thing. It's pretty form fitting, and I think would be really hard to wiggle into when you are wet... I think most of the zoot tops are tight like that (and ran small in my opinion). I have another tri top I bought that was a little baggier. It was actually less flattering- it rode up while swimming and then stuck to you and created a muffin top when you got out. Tri clothing decisions are way too high maintenance for me!

Thanks Jen - that's what I was thinking.
I could swim in the tri top and my Speedo bottoms. My original thought (that would also save some $$) was to put on a sports bra over the Speedo top when I get out of the water. But then I was thinking transition time. I'll have to put on a top, shorts, socks & shoes.
Oh yeah, then I start thinking about my hair. Last time I did a tri, my hair was really short and a skinny headband was all I needed - I didn't even have to comb it that much. Now I have longer hair - down to my shoulders - how do you deal with that?:confused3
It's not quite long enough to easily pull into a ponytail. But I guess on the bike I'll have my helmet on...

I just want to keep it out of my face so it won't bug me.

OH, on another note - I just found out there is a new bike shop opening about a mile from my house today! I'm going to check it out!:yay:

mgsmom I got a Zoot tank with a nice support bra inside, it's enough support for me. Also got Zoot bike shorts that have thin padding (so hopefully won't be too squishy when I get on the bike!), and are a good length I think to be comfortable to swim in. I really did not want to have to deal with changing anything other than my shoes in transition!

About the Newtons - does anyone know if they have some sort of patent on the design? I just don't understand why one of the major shoe companies hasn't come out with their own Newton-esque shoe (Nike, Adidas, etc).
If they were about half the price they are I would grab a pair right now!

Hi guys,

Well, my spring race training is over, so it's time to get serious about tri training. Yeah, late and meager, I come to the table. So probably will stay with sprint this year, unless I get delusional and do an Oly. Half IM is not in the cards, since I am still contemplating a fall marathon and just need to focus!

Nothing else to report now.

Maura

Duane- you are so right! You guys don't have to worry about quite as much about what you wear!

Maura-good to see you! Wow, a marathon! I'm just not mentally there yet. At all. I've thought about doing a half, though. It would have to be a really cool half, tho, like the Princess at WDW or something.

BigEeyore-that's what I'm debating about too - how long is this transition going to be if I'm not prepared, right? Maybe when I swim this week I will lay out my stuff and time myself getting out of the pool and getting changed.

New bike shop was great - they were very informative and really talked to me a lot and it was so encouraging. They only carry really top of the line stuff - the cheapest bike in there was $1200 but it sure was hot - but I told them whatever I got I would bring there for service and what-not.
On that note, a friend at work is a "serious" cyclist and he and his wife ride together a lot. He said she might have a bike I could borrow for the race - I would just have to get my own pedals. How sweet would that be? :woohoo: Then I could really see how it is to ride a "real" bike and go from there.

Hey kids-

So, it just got really hot! Ran 6 yesterday in 93 degrees (heat index 104); did 5 today in a nice cool 87 degrees (heat index 99). Brilliant move- poured water on my hat for cooling- yep, sweat in the eyes. At least the burning of my eyes distracted me from the roasting of the rest of me! ;)

I was leaning towards a marathon in October in the Florida panhandle. I'm not so sure now. I was worried about how hot the race might be; kind of forgot how hot the training will be! (I can get to a treadmill at the gym, but it's kind of a pain). My other option is to wait for a January/February race, but I have a hard time training through the holidays, and I live in fear that I will just stop moving if I don't have some sort of plan...

mgsmom- glad you're making progress on the bike! Sounds like a good idea to borrow your friend's bike- what do you bet you'll want the exact same one after you bond with hers!

Tomorrow is very exciting- my tri suit comes tonight (the horror), and we will do a practice tri at our coaches' house. They have a pond for the swim and we are supposed to bring our bikes and stuff. I'll decide tonight if I can face the class in a tri suit!

I better get back to work. Somebody brought a cookie cake to work- how mean is that?! Note to self- remember the tri suit when you think about sneaking back to the cookie.:rolleyes1

mgsmom - lol. tris are why I grew out my bangs and am grouwing out my har now. Ig you can't do a pony tail, I would just pull the front back. WOrked fine for me. I did bring a hat or visor for the run. I tend to do that anyway, but after a swim cap and bike helmet.....

Maura - Starting with the sprint is a good idea. I'm sur eyou could do oly, but giiving yourself a season to get itnto it is good.

Jen - Hope teh practice tri goes well tonight and you love your wetsuit!

I am so geaked for tri season after pending the weekend with another tri person. OK, having my swwim improvev a ton helps too! Sunday was my last running race fro a while. Time to fully concentrate on tri's. No events until June 28, though. Just not too many tri's around here.

Hey everyone, I had bought an XTerra wetsuit around christmas cause they were having a good deal. Apparently that means I get all of their emails. They're doing 50% off full wetsuits (promo code is FRENZY50) good till May 9th. Hope everyone's training is going well, onto learning how to swim.

Wow, lot of good stuff going on.

Jen, you have more guts than me. I have no desire for a Tri suit. Don't you basically have to get naked if you have to pee..... in a porta potty? No thanks.

I have a sprint this weekend although it is a pool swim but hey at least it is a race. 400m swim, 12k bike then a 5k. Next weekend another sprint, this time a 400m Open water swim. Should be fun.

Three weeks after that I have a reverse tri. They have one in Naples every year and it always sells out right away. Another open water swim in the gulf. So, I got lucky 3 tris, two with 10 miles of my house, one within 20 miles. Have to take them while we can.

Then I have another OWS sprint in July then nothing until October - unfortunately it is the same weekend as the Disney Wine and Dine. Maybe I could do the Wine and Dine and stay up all night then do the sprint on Sunday since it is over in Siesta Key. Hmmmmm.

I need to find an Oly this fall. I plan on doing the New Orleans HIM in April next year so I need to get some OLY's under my belt.

enjoy all,
Duane

Hey kids- ran yesterday before torrential downpour. I skipped our class because of the rain. I couldn't see us swimming in a pond and then riding our bikes down a dirt road where they live! Turns out some people did go to class, but not many since they added some new dates for swimming. I did however have dreams of swimming in the rain surrounded by jellyfish...

Duane- yeah, so I tried on the suit. It's pretty scary stuff. I feel like I'm wearing Harry's Superman costume- I just need a cape! I will definitely have to plan my bathroom stops very carefully. Thanks for the naked in the porta-potty image! I may practice wearing the top around my waist with a big t-shirt- wonder if I could squirm into the top under the t-shirt before the start. I'm guessing not. :rolleyes1 Your schedule wears me out again!

Carrie- you go with your good tri attitude! I wish I was feeling so upbeat about my up-coming tri.

Maura-
I'm with you on the sprint thing. The best thing I did for my race next weekend was to pick the sprint distance! Let's just say I don't have to worry about being over-trained. :rolleyes1

Oh man, I miss a week and look at all the posts that pile up!

My big event last weekend was to watch the local sprint tri a week after my 70.3, based on my run the following day I made the right decision not to do them on back to back weekends, or I would have been painfully slow.

I am looking at my options later in May, likely over Memorial Day weekend, for a sprint tri (possibly an Olympic, but likely a sprint distance). After that one or two sprint tris in June, including repeating one I enjoyed last year (Y Freedom Tri ) that has a designated last place finisher--last year it was the Statue of Liberty and this year will be Uncle Sam. This tri is always the weekend before the 4th of July weekend and is part of that community's celebration. This was a fun race last year, and I really appreciated the ice cold wet towel waiting for me at the finish line! Although this year they trade the finisher's medal for a custom Polar water bottle. I'm not sure I need another water bottle, but it will be more useful than another finisher medal.
