2009-2010 Marching Band Season is here!!

tonight is first Parent meeting of the season....BAND FRIENDS!!:goodvibes:goodvibes

I am food mom again (a job I love) but I am going to have to find people for at least one competition to cover as this is Cassidy's senior year. :guilty: ( I have 4 years left with the younger)

I may be totally insane but I agreed to chaperone our first away game next week. It's 4 hours away and an overnight trip. I think I have "sucker freshman parent" written all over my forehead. At least ds will have access to more food money. :lmao:

Honestly, I'm looking forward to spending time with these kids since ds has been spending most of his summer with them. Hopefully, it will go well.

Good luck! Our first game is next Friday, luckily it's local (one of the few). JEsus Christ Superstar is coming along nicely.

Looks like the trip to WDW for T'giving is a go, they will be there from THursday thru Sunday, Coronado Springs. Perform at the Old Spice Classic, three day hoppers, $800 per kid. We're on the fence since I have BC CL booked for the four days prior to that.

DS just finished his 2nd week of band camp. Of course it's been a heat wave here and he's been exhausted every day. School starts in a week with the first game that Friday. He has a few night practices next week just so they don't lose what they already learned and then practice every day after school, once it starts.

The are performing songs from Cirque du Soleil La Nouba which is totally awesome. I continue to be amazed at the sound that comes from these kids. We just found out last night the band will be going to Nashville for their Spring trip and playing at the Country Music Hall of Fame. It's an exiting time for the entire family.

morning practice today....at the first band parent meeting the director was praising the student leadership (which my kid is the leader of...not drum major...literally President of Leadership:rotfl:):thumbsup2and the fact that they have more of the show on the field already...of course kids added and dropped so it could get interesting. :lmao:. They don't do away games so the first two things they are doing was last week's parade and next week's parade...this one is the biggest in the state(that is judged)...but it is hours away.

Oh well...what we band parents won't do for our kids.

Son is a senior on the drum line, daughter sophmore in color guard. Show this year is Lord of the Rings.

Our band did this music last year. I really liked the music.

First game was scheduled for last Friday, then postponed to Saturday due to lighting problems at both stadiums. They did great considering how nervous they were. Jesus Christ Sueprstar is really sounding good, Thriller needs some polishing, as do a few ofthe songs he threw at them on Thursday like Frankenstein and The Final Countdown. Drumline had a blast dancing. Felt sorry for the other school's band, very small, no uniforms (no $$$ apparantly), all brass & percussion.

This is terrific reading for a parent of a guard girl. Our high school is pretty small and our entire marching band is less than 50..including guard. Our guard does only flags..no weapons at all. They're trying to step up their routines so as to compete this year. The theme is Spy Games, or something like that. They do the music from Mission Impossible, Get Smart, Peter Gun, Live and Let Die..it's pretty awesome.
It's wonderful to see how you guys with large schools do things...pretty inspiring to some of us small schools. I will say that my dd, a sophomore this year, did go to Fred J Miller for Drum Major, Percussion and Guard camp this summer. It was so much more involved than she was used to.
I'm really looking forward to reading more of those larger school experiences...half time IS game time!!!!

Good luck to all the bands for a great season. I spent 9 years as a band parent and 7 as band parent president. I miss it but I do go and see a friend's daughter play every now and then.

One of my ds's played a spy show and used some of the same music.

Have fun. It goes all too fast.

DD12 is a majorette - it's a small school, so grades 7 - 12 can all participate. Our theme this year is Blackout - songs are Paranoid, Paint it Black, and Back in Black. Looking forward to the first football game (DS is starting offensive tackle) on Friday night to see both the band the football team.

Oh, yay!
I'm so excited for this season! (It'll be my first of 2 as a DM :) )
We're competing this year after taking a hiatus last year.
Our show is '80s themed, with Thriller. (We chose this before MJ died, I swear!)
And we added the dance to our show.

The kids had their first true competition Saturday, the state fair parade and band shell competition. Our kids sounded the best they ever had this early in the season and it showed in the scores, they were second in their division (by a few points...but they were robbed I think:rotfl:) and fourth overall!!:cool1:

The Mystery music sounds way cool!!

We only have four color guard and all but 1 is new....it's a little strange to see the tiny bands (less than 40 players) have bigger guards than us.

Looking forward to seeing the band in uniform at the first football game this Thursday. They will perform a stand still for freshman orientation tomorrow night and a full run of what they have done on their show Thursday. They have some great things in their show that are going to look amazing in uniform!

First competition is on the 12th.

We had our first football game this past Friday. The name of our show is Tribal. DD is really excited, but very nervous since this is her first year doing rifle. Now that the first game is over, hopefully, she will be a little less nervous. The show is not completely finished yet, but what is done looks great!

Aww, all you band parents are making me nostalgic for the "good ole days" when DS was in high school marching band. The kids make friends they'll keep for life. DS was just home briefly after getting his master's in music performance, 9 years since HS marching band, and who did he call? His high school band friends. Luv2sew, I'm afraid there's no such thing as a "former" band parent. I recently met a bunch of band parents at the MK as they were chaperoning their band that was going to be marching on Main Street. I didn't know the kids at all, but when they marched, I cried! Once a band parent, always a band parent. Mickeymo, you're not insane-I was the head chaperone for DS's band and loved every trip (although I wish I'd had ear plugs on some of those bus rides!). The excitement and anticipation at many of the events is unbelieveable. When our kids went to marching contests, it was just amazing how seriously they took it. Good luck to all of you! And if anyone's ever performing at WDW, let me know. If I'm there, I promise to see them and cry.

I survived the weekend chaperoning the band at their first away game. The band kids were great and I would do it again!!! I even got about 6 hours of sleep overnight. I chaperoned the colorguard and part of the trombone kids including my son much to his dismay. I tried to be as incognito as I could giving him his freedom. He found me when he needed money or a refill on his water jug, though...:lmao: I lucked out, our bus was probably the quietest bus...:woohoo: The chaperones that had the drum line were looking a bit dazed by the time we returned home Saturday afternoon. :lmao:

Small town Texas Friday night football is an experience!!! The 6 charter buses containing the band, color guard, football team, drill team and cheerleaders as well as the band's semi truck pulled into the hotel. Immediately following was a television news crew. I guess we were newsworthy :)

The stadium was packed including a lot of our parents who made the 4 hour trip to see the game and the band. The kids did a great job for their first performance and for their first run through on an actual field. They practice during the week in a parking lot with the yard lines marked.

Next game is on Saturday night, another non-conference game, this time on the other side of town which considering Houston traffic, is not less than an hour travel time... I haven't received a call to be a chaperone this one, yet.

Well we had our first football game last night (school hasn't started so they had a Thursday night game). The show was ok, they still have a lot of work to get done before next Saturday's performance. The band Nazi is at it again-she wants to be in charge of everything-she is really annoying!!!

Anyone have any competitions this past weekend? We have our first this coming Saturday.

Tomorrow is our first competition. We have some good friends coming from our old town because that band will be there too. I just watched a video of the show on Facebook. They taped it from a lot higher up then we can sit in our stands and saw some of the formations you can't see in the bleachers. It looks REALLY cool. It will be fun to see the show at BOA (like always) because you can sit up so high and see the show how you are supposed to see it! We have our home show on Sunday so 2 competitions this weekend (although we are technically exhibition for our own show).
