If I had purchased a fixed week timeshare I would be soooo upset. I checked our school website this week and our district starts on Aug 14, which is usual, but school does not end until June 11 which is a Monday to boot!!

We always go Memorial Day weekend, we enjoy the low crowds, the Flower and Garden fest and the cooler weather. That was going to be our family tradition until the end of time!

There's no way I missed the hearings on such dramatic changes to our school schedule. They even added 1 week of half days to each semester!! I am so angry we are considering drastic changes next year. The parents would have never accepted that! One of the 1/2 day weeks is the week before Spring Break week. It is so crazy and uncaring and I really do not see the benefit of adding 2 weeks of 1/2 days and then extending school for 2 weeks into the summer. Cost wise or educational it makes no sense.

At least with DVC we have the flexibility to change our vacation, because if we owned a fixed week, this would be even more painful.

Most Texas schools get out in late May, it's too hot in June! LOL!!

And here I was planning my 2nd Annual SSR BBQ for next year over the holiday weekend. :guilty:

Sorry your calendar got changed! We are moving and our kids are leaving Catholic School (which gets out and starts earlier than public around here) and now we can't go to SSR for Father's DAy weekend b/c the kids will still be in school and taking standardized testing to boot!

Maybe Liferbabe and family want to move their SSR BBQ until the end of June/beginning of July?? Pretty please?? :wizard:

The flexibility is what I love most, we never considered any other timeshare since we didn't want to be locked into a certain time of year etc. This year I've booked 2 single nights at DLR, 1 night at BWV and one long trip SSR/VB.

Our school schedule in Western NY throws in those 1/2 days too and it is absolutely crazy for working parents! Generally though-our school year begin the Thursday after Labor Day and goes until June 22-23. There are random days off in the year but it drives me nuts trying to plan vacations because they never have the next year's schedule posted until late summer.

LiferBabe, Ed and I had just discussed about returning next year and hooking up with you guys on Memorial Day at the pavillion. Well, you are absolutely right about the flexibility of owning DVC...good luck on your new plans. :)

Momof4, It is crazy!! I dont know why they make it so difficult for working parents. Who gets off work at 12:30? One of us will have to take off work the half day week and the other for Spring Break week.

Keep Hope Alive!!! :thumbsup2 That's sweet you guys thought about us!

This may just accelerate some decisions/plans that we had already made about our children's education. We have a really good Elementary school in our neighborhood, Jr. High is where it starts to go downhill so we were not going to do change anything until our oldest reached Jr. High. Our neighbors moved away when their oldest reached Jr. Hi. :sad2: We love our neighborhood and dont want to move away.
Dh is a teacher (new district), and we do have some options. We still have a couple of weeks to work things out, but I really dont want to support a district that would make changes like this without consulting the parents.

Ive checked the sites of all our neighboring districts and none of them have changed their schedules. :confused3

Next year, 2007-2008, school will not begin anywhere in Texas before Aug. 23. The recent legislative session took this local control away from schools. I would not be surprised if they slowly try to move it back to an after Labor Day beginning in future sessions. Schools still have the same number of days attendance required, so many holidays will be shortened or go away or you go later in June.
Too many people did not complain to their senators and representatives when this was being decided.
This happened a few years(in the 80's) ago and the next session they changed their decision. Too many people called complaining after the fact.

OK, my curiousity got the best of me and I had to look at your school calendar. Are your kids in year round school? I saw that June 11th is the last day for year round. Traditional calendar students are still getting out around May 25. It is year round that has the half days before spring break which does seem odd. I've seen this during semester test days, but not a whole week.
There will still be some major changes in all calendars next year.
