2007-2008 cheer parent thread

I am surprised that there are so many local competitions this year. Nationally run comps too. My daughter cheers for Cheerworks in Oxford Ma. Last weekend we were at COA in RI and this weekend we will be in Springfield. We will be in RI for Feb 2 and 3 with you guys though!

Melissa

Hi Melissa,

What team is your daughter on? Looks like you guys are on the same schedule as Full House. I have friends there and they were at COA last weekend and are in Springfield this weekend =) I cannot wait for Providence!!!

My daughter is on Youth Large Level 2..actually this comp we are trying level 3. They have mastered a few tucks on the team, so they are trying to step it up this weekend. She is also on the Senior Large level 3 team. I think they are having a rough year, but I am sure they will succeed in the end!

What team is your daughter on? I enjoy watching the Sparks compete. They have really stepped it up!! They are explosive on the floor!

Hi Melissa,

My daughter is on Sparks' Mini 2. They've started out strong and I think it is going to be an exciting year for her (and me too lol)!

You're right about Sparks' teams! This is our first year with them but every time I saw them last year I knew that's were we wanted to be. I'm just so thankful that we made the choice we did!!!

Good luck this weekend! Can't wait to see your teams in Providence.

Brenda

Brenda,
Good luck to your daughter this weekend too!!

Sad news here on the cheer front!!! DD got injured (add her to the list of her injured teammates) at the end of practice on Wednesday night!! She was dropped out of her stunt and landed on a rolled ankle. (She was breaking in her new Power Edge sneakers so I don't know if they had anything to do with her rolling her ankle or not). It immediately swelled so we had an ambulance take her to the hospital. No broken bones!! Today we went to the ortho and it is a 3rd degree sprain with torn ligaments!!! She is sporting a rather large 'cankle' and will most likely be out for 6 weeks!!!

Not sure what we are doing for Providence as she wants to be "on the mat" in case her team wins a paid bid (they already have an unpaid) to Worlds and the same for Cheersport in Atlanta. Possibly by Atlanta she may be able to just stunt but would have to take a knee for the rest of the routine! She should be able to begin to fully work the routine at the end of February is her goal!!

She is soooooooo upset and still in quite a bit of pain (taking percocet). She has one of those hard air cast boots. We go back to the ortho in 2 weeks (the day before the Providence comp) and at that point the ortho believes he can schedule some physical therapy (it is too swollen now for therapy).

Such bad timing!! Just when she was consistently landing her double full!! I feel so bad for her................

Stay safe everyone and good luck!!! Cross your fingers that DD will be returning sooner than later and her recovery is uneventful!!! I appreciate the good cheer thoughts!!!

Can anyone offer me some advice about applying cheer make-up. My dd is 6 and applying the powerded eye shadows if difficult. We have loose powered blue and silver. I can never get the colors right or keep her from having dark circles. Help!:confused3

Does your cheer makeup come with a glue type stuff?? I use q-tips for applying the eye glitter after using the glue stuff. I only pat the shadow/glitter on the eye lid instead of trying to rub it on like one normally would. After I apply the make up, I wet a q tip and clean up all that has smudged!!!

Now that DD is older, she does her own makeup!!! LOL!!

My DDs 5 & 8 want to be cheerleaders. They have been taking gymnastics for the past three years. Their gym has new owners this year and I am really impressed with them (and I really liked the old owner as well.) Anyway, there is a new All Star team that formed this past year at their gym. They have tryouts in May. Are the All Star tryouts for these ages really tryouts or are they pretty much anyone who shows up gets to be on the team? I don't want my girls to get their hopes too high that they are going to be cheerleaders. The 8 year old is really good and I wouldn't worry about her but the 5 year old looks pretty much the same as she did in the beginning! LOL! I think there are only about 5 or 6 girls on the younger squad right now. I just wasn't sure what to expect. The timing is good because they would be finished with their dance classes then (the 5 year old is really good at dance - but likes gymnastic better.)

Most of the gyms around here use all of the kids that tryout!! There is quite a bit of moving around with levels at the beginning of the season. Just a heads up that it is a year round committment and sometimes their dance/gymnastic lessons may interfere and cause a problem. Just make sure you let the gym know right from the beginning that your girls are involved in dance/gymnastics (if that would be the case). A cheering team can not function when one member is missing alot!!!

Good luck

Just saw this thread. My DD17 has been cheering since see was 7.
She is on the USA Wildcat Sr 5 team. Also on the Level 4,Open and HipHop teams. She really enjoys cheering. She has a standing full and double.
They are getting ready for their competions in Providence,RI and Altanta,GA hoping for a bid to the world's.

poohbearluvr............usa wildcats is a great program. I have met your owner a few times throughout the year and she is very nice (Cheryl I believe is her name).

My DD cheer's for Celebrity Lg Co ed 5 so we will see you in Providence and Atlanta. She just pulled ligaments in her ankle last wednesday!! She was breaking in new sneakers and her stunt group let her down and she rolled her ankle!! Pretty nasty 3rd degree sprain. Six weeks out!! She will be ready for Worlds (they already have an unpaid bid). She can return end of February. She is hoing she can just stunt for Cheersport and take a knee for the rest of the routine!!! In her 6 years cheering this is her first serious injury. Plenty of strains throughout the years but the first one that has her out for some time!!

Good luck to you DD in Providence!!!!! Hope her team gets one of the bids to Worlds!

Yes, rbuzzotta, Cheryl is the owner of our gym. She's great.
Sorry to read about your daughter's injury. DD has had her share of sprains also.
The Providence competition will be the first time that she will be competing
on all 4 teams each day(8 routines over the course of the wknd). She's going to be so tired I'm sure. It would be nice to get a bid to Worlds.

Good Luck to your DD team. I saw them perform at the DCU center they were
great.

4 teams....8 routines over 2 days!!! Ugh!! That calls for a trip to that awesome mall next door!! LOL!

DD's team has had it's share of nasty injuries this year. They have really only hit their routine in Indy at WSF when they won the unpaid bid and there they had a fall and bobbles. They have since changed their routine and this past weekend was the first time performing it with only 1 week's practice time. I hope they have a better showing in Providence.

I will be tired just thinking about your DD that weekend............may she have a great 2 days and be healthy and most importantly happy!!!

To poohbearluvr and rbuzzotta especially : I wanted to ask you guys if you think that this could be considered a "normal" practice schedule for a co-ed cheer team (Sr. level 5) that Dd 16 cheers for:
Tuesday: 5.30-9.00
Thursday: 5.30-9.00
Friday: 5.45-9.00
Saturday: 9.00-12.00

I understand that the team is getting ready to go to Nationals, (UCA in Fla) but it is really starting to interfere with my daughter's school work, and after keeping this schedule since September, her grades are starting to suffer. Not to mention, some of the kids are starting to get injuries and burn out at this point.
DD is a Junior in HS this year, and of course there is always the hope that she could get a cheer scholarship, but is it really worth the trade-off in grades?

Any opinions are welcome!
:cheer2:

My dd 10 is on a junior level 5 team and brother 17 on a sr leel 5 team. We only have practices like that a week before a comp or 2 weeks if it big. Thats seems like an aweful lot of time if there is no comp and this is normal I would complain to the coaches and remind them these kids are still in school and at what time should they do homework and sleep.

Good luck all with world bids. we are hoping to get them to and have 2 shots one in feb and one in march. I just want the bid to go to disney:)

Hey my DD is on dreamquest I guess next year we will be together with the merge. Have you heard about it?
Ooooh I saw your DD's team compete at WSF! They did awesome! Congrats on the worlds bid...totally deserved! It was quite the topic on the prox message boards with the ICE thing.
My dd cheers for Edge Elite and our home revolves around cheer!! LOVE IT!

Next one for us is Jamfest SuperNationals!

Thanks. I kind of figured at that age they would take everyone but wasn't sure. I am glad the tryouts are in May because that would be when dance is finishing up. I have already told the girls that if they do cheerleading then they would have to quit dance. And the cheerleading meets at their gymnastics gym on Fridays and Sundays plus they have to take one tumbling class from the gym they already go to - so that would be their gymnastics stuff. I think they would like tumbling better than the regular stuff they have been doing anyway. That way, every thing would be combined together and shouldn't interfere. Plus it will help with getting ADHD-DS10's homework done next year without having to do afterschool stuff everyday!

We are headed to UCA too. See you there!

Don't quote me, as my daughter is on the special needs team, but I believe our other teams are practicing approximately 3x per week. Plus a good portion of the Senior Coed 5 team helps 1 day per week with the special needs team. Makes for a very long Sunday, as they work with us from 3:30 - 5, then have a short break and then go straight into their practice for a few hours.

And many of the kids take privates and tumbling classes in addition to the regular practices.

So, it sounds a bit similar.

I know how tough it is though. DS swims competitively, so he is at swim practice 5x per week. His practices are from 4am to 6:30am, so he tries to be in bed by 8pm during swim season. He has to be extremely disciplined to keep up swimming and his 4.0+. It is really tough at times to do both the sport and homework! I sympathsize with your daughter (and you)!

What team does your daughter cheer for so I can be sure to look out for them when we are in Disney?

Good Luck!

Vistanamama, that is a lot of practice time. They practice more near a big comp though. DD spends a lot of time a the gym being on 4 teams but, the most is for Level 5 Sr. Small
Tuesday 7-9
Thursday 7-9
Saturday 11-2

DD grades come first though. If we see a change in them we will have to
reconsider the amount of time she spend on cheering and dancing.
We are also going to the UCA's in Fla being held in March.

That is quite a practice schedule. I could see if it were a week or 2 prior to a big National comp (NCA, UCA, Cheersport, Worlds) but not as a normal schedule. DD pracitces 6:30-9 on Sunday and Wednesday. Occassionally they will add an extra 2 hour practice if need be but that is seldom. Attendance is a big issue with senior teams. It is very difficult to get a full team to practices!!!

Good luck..............hope to see you all at Worlds!!!
