Hi all,

Sooooo much to respond to...
Hmmm.Nice, Nice Pics, Nice Dresses, Nice Invites, BAD Weather, PD... No Home Schooling for us...

Julie, You are certainly most welcome, I just wish I could do more.....

OK, unrelated question...

A guy in my office went to the hospital last week coughing up blood. Today I found out he has cancer of the asophogus (sp) in the 4 stage. He started Chemo today... Can any of you tell me how bad that is? he is a really nice guy, and it sounds really bad...

And if you can spare any prayers and pixie dust for him and his family, he has a wife and 2 kids (21 MO son and an 8 YO daughter) they are all having a pretty rough time...

No. I don't think my kids are learning the same things as the PS kids are learning. They are learning more. :) I've had contact with some of the kids in the local PS's and to steal an old line "they don't know jack." :) :lmao: Granted, we do NOT live in a very good school district. We are rural and have a lot of kids from tough family situations. I've also noticed that the kids I've had contact with don't really know how to LEARN. They are spoon fed the information and are expected to spew it back out when called upon to do so (mostly for the state proficiency tests) There seems to be a lot of "teaching to the test."
They've also lost control of a lot of the kids. I have a friend whose cousin is a 2nd grade teacher at the local school and basically has no control over the students. They swear at her, they talk on their cell phones, etc....and she can't do much about it b/c disciplining a kid in school now-a-days is a big no-no (what happened to the paddle that we had used on us in middle school????)

As to whether the kids would be at the same level depends on what you did with them at home. If you were serious about schooling and got a good curriculum, they'd probably stay on track.....or be ahead of their peers. If school was a lot more laid back and you skipped more days than you did school, there'd probably be problems. :(

I've totally enjoyed learning right along with my kids. Harder subjects (like these pre-algebra ones I'm doing now) were a natural extension of what I had been doing. It would be hard for most to pull a kid out during these harder subjects and try to relearn material that you last did in the mid-80's!) Of course, most cities have fairly good sized homeschooling groups and there are a ton of resources through those (co-ops, tutors, etc)

I'm homeschooling two right now. I've got a 7th grader and a 4th grader. I "teach" most of the subjects with the 4th grader. My 7th grader has just started "self-teaching" herself. Meaning she reads what she needs to read, does the activities she needs to do, and then takes an assessment (if there is one for that lesson) She needs some help here and there, but I'm more of a facilitator this year than a teacher. It's great that she's stepped into the role of teaching herself....that will lead to a lifetime of learning. :)

HTH

Thanks Karen! A new prospective. Sounds like you are doing the very best thing for your kids.

What second grader carries a cell phone!:confused3 I always say,"The Apple doesn't fall far from the tree"

David, most definately, I will say prayers. I know stage 4 is not good. I'm sorry.

Along those same lines, if anyone has any more prayers, I received a call this afternoon from one of my sisters saying that my Mom was taken into the emergency room this morning. Apparently she is having problems eating and swallowing as she has a burning feeling at the top of the stomach. This has gone on for days (so I find out today) and they felt it warranted to be checked out. I talked to her a while ago, they are admitting her and at this point have not ruled out a heart attack. It's tough having older parents, and even tougher when they don't always speak up for themselves when they should and only accept the information being offered to them at the time.

I had a new patient last year that came in with what he thought was an infected wisdom tooth. We sent him to the Oral Surgeon for a Biopsy. Turned out he had stage 4 Esphogeal Cancer. He went through some treatments and last about 6-8 months. He passed away at the age of 39. It was very sad because he had not seen a Doctor in 10 years and was afraid of Dentists. Had he gone it might have been detected sooner. I felt very bad for him and his family. Stage 4 is not a good sign. I am sending prayers along with pixie dust!

David - sorry to hear about your co-worker. Sadly stage 4 is not good. Here's hoping that he beats the odds.

Cindy - prayers for you and your mom as well. It is hard as our parents get older.

Cindy,

Sending prayers! Don't rule out it might just be acid reflux. The Doctor I worked for who is 10 years older than me thought he had a heart attack. After some testing it turns out he has acid reflux without any prior symptoms. Let's hope it something minor. Prayers and pixie dust!

Just this same reason is why I've learned to participate in my kids activities, but keep it at an arms length when it comes to volunteering. I learned quite a bit about the boys in Cameron's Cub Scout den this past year and won't get into that same situation with Walker. I'll help out -- willingly, but not to the point of being a leader. Sad as it sounds, the kids don't have any respect and to be the adult forced into that situation made me miserable. In the end, I didn't want to be at the meetings anymore than the boys wanted to be at the meetings. Why did they continue to come? I'm sure a lot of it had to do with their parents looking for an hour of entertainment for their kids. Some of the boys would be climbing on the furniture, mouthing off, making fun of other boys. The 2 year olds I care for acted better than these kids. The kicker and what really did me in was when I received an email from the Cub Master which came off as a reprimand to me and the other leader as to the behavior of the boys in our den during a pack meeting. Like we had any control over the boys and should have been babysitting them? Ummm, did they not have parents there themselves who should be watching their children, not expecting the leaders to do it for them.

It's very sad and I worry about our future generations with this kind of attitude coming from the kids and being accepted because there is no other recourse. I'm not one to spank my kids or anyone elses for that matter, but I disagree with the lack of respect the kids have for adults in their lives.

Okay, I'll stop down now.....I guess it's been a longer day than I thought.

I love our Elementary and I love our high school. Our middle school does not have such good reports. We have 2 more years before middle school. Do you think you could homeschool for 3 years and then put your kids back into the Public School system? Do you think they would be at the same level?

Karen do you think your kids are learning the same things the kids in Public Schools are learning? I would be afraid of not giving my daughter a good education. I had a few subjects I had problems with (ie. Geometry) and do not think I could teach them very well. How many kids are you homeschooling and what grades are they in?

I would say the ohiomouse kids learn a lot more than kids in regular public schools. I saw their classroom and one of the books in the bookcase was the DVC Member Guidebook. I think that they get quiz's like:

How many points do you need to stay in a one bedroom at VWL on a Sunday through Thursday in Dream Season.

or

What is the cancellation policy for a reservation made on DCL.

That sounds similar to what my Uncle has. He had throat cancer which I guess he was told was inoperative so he went thru Chemo & radiation at the same time just before this past Christmas. The Doctor said he did both becasue he thought my uncle could handle it since he is in such good health (other then the cancer) As of right now he is doing ok
