Looks like everything went up in points across the board , typically 2 to 3 points.

Does it go up each year or have there been years it didn't or even went down?

At what point will they say this is too high, nobody will ever use their points for this?

We were thinking about the Poly for a special treat, but after fooling around with our points it just seemed like such a waste.

A few years back they added the ability to book the level of room and to book concierge. They also went to the hotel season schedule instead of using the DVC schedule. Prior to this change you couldn't book concierge and got "best available" for a regular room. Typically, this worked out quite well and DVC members got excellent rooms for lower points.

When the new schedule was put out things took a tremendous jump. Some people found they were going to need 150% of the points they expected for rooms they had booked in advance.

We haven't seen jumps like that in the years since. However, the points have continued to inch up as you describe this year's increase. I don't recall any time that the points went down.

The increases have not been as dramatic as they have been in past years. However, there must be a huge "handling fee" built into the cost of these trades. I think Disney takes a big cut of the point pie here. This has become a very sad part of the DVC program. It decreases the flexibility of the whole program and treats members poorly. Here are a few comparision numbers for the DC. The biggest point increases at in the DC have been at the deluxe resorts. The moderates are at similiar levels.

Cheap season Poly:
2001: 22 Sun-Thurs 40 Fri/Sat
2005: 45 Sun-Thurs 81 Fri/Sat

Regular season Poly:
2001: 37 Sun-Thurs 71 Fri/Sat
2005: 59 Sun-Thurs 90 Fri/Sat

If I'm not mistaken, the 22, 2001 points got you a lagoon view room.

So, I guess the value of the onsite DVC resorts have fallen by 30-50% over the last 4 years. OR a large handling fee has been included in the points charges for these exchanges.

Personally, I would just pay cash for a Poly stay and pay out of pocket or rent out points to cover the expense.

Moooooo

I can't remember the Disney Collection or Conceirge Collection ever going down....

My DW and I are trying to use points at those mod and deluxe resorts that we always wanted to stay at before the pricing gets too high.. We only go for usually a night or two to avoid burning too many points... :earsboy: :earsgirl:

Wow Johnnie...

That is a HUGE increase! Yikes...

Why even bother offering it as a DVC option at this rate?

Has anyone ever questioned DVC or their guide about this? Or does DVC think we just don't notice the increases?

It's been stated here on the DVC board, that Disney is often unable to rent the points you trade to them and therefore they have to charge more for trades. Past numbers have been tossed around saying up to 25% of the traded points go unused. It is really difficult to assess this as members are not provided any information about these trade transactions. These trades are just part of the "Disney magic"...you trade points to Disney and your points magically make lots of money for them.

What is clear to me is that Disney is going to charge the DVCer so many points that there is no way they will lose one penny on the transaction, Heaven forbid they don't make rack rate+ off the DVCer.

While I understand they need to charge enough to discourage DVCers from taking up all the rooms at the Poly, these rates are way excessive.

For example, I trade and give Disney 59 BCV points for a single Fri night at the Poly, Disney rents out a BCV studio for 5 nights in the dream season (60 points).

If they rent 5 nights at rack rate they make $1625.00
If they rent 5 nights at a 50% discount they make $812.50.
If they rent 5 nights at a 75% discount, Disney makes $406.25.

Whens that last time you've seen those kinds of kiscounts at Disney?

In some circumstances a trade may be of OK value, but you if care about the value you receive for your points, you really have to look closely before proceeding. Just like Disney does, I view my points as money. Crunch the numbers on these trades, and you will see what a rip-off they can be.

I am in the camp of why bother. IMO, it is insulting to the members to offer the exchanges at such high rates. Though I do understand the system to a certain degree and realize there is no way around a certain penalty when DVC turns cash to points. The real problem is that DVC is not negotiating a good rate upfront. And as long as the other resorts know DVC is going to offer them no matter what, they will continue to offer meager discounts, likely in the range of 10% or even less. Now if DVC starts letting the other WDW resorts compete and only offer the ones that give a REAL discount, say 40-50%, this system will become viable. I also assume that CRO takes a big cut of the cash when they rent so maybe a change in that area would be worthwhile. Maybe MS should rent more themselves or offer a barter system for overflow from other WDW resorts rather than trying for cash.

IMO, as long as the current rates are in place, only a SMALL high demand/quality subset of the II exchanges offer any real value.

Just means I will need more points :earboy2:
