Updated: 9:39 a.m. ET Nov. 17, 2004PASADENA, Calif. - Come New Years Day, the worlds most famous mouse will lead its best-known parade.
Declaring him a friend to families around the world, the Tournament of Roses on Tuesday named Mickey Mouse as grand marshal of the 116th parade, which will have the theme Celebrate Family.
Mickey Mouse has brought entertainment, joy and laughter to families around the world for 75 years and we couldnt think of a more ideal grand marshal to help us celebrate family, Tournament of Roses President Dave Davis said.
Although he routinely appears on Disneyland floats in the parade, the cartoon character has only ridden at the head of the procession once before. He accompanied his creator when Walt Disney was grand marshal in 1966.
Only a handful of non-humans have led the parade. Kermit the Frog had the honor in 1996 and the puppet Charlie McCarthy was co-marshal with Edgar Bergen in 1940.
After leading the parade, the Mickey Mouse character will toss the coin before the 91st Rose Bowl football game.
