20 Secrets Your Waiter/Waitress Won't Tell You

Why do people assume just because something is getting close to the time it should be discarded that it's not acceptable to serve or eat? I've seen the "avoid the specials" and the "fish" items so many times on these types of lists, and honestly, in 99% of time, there should be no issues, and the food would still be great!

No, I haven't. I have heard a lot though and yes, the lemons are mild but still not appetizing at all.
 

Some of those are dead on.


I have seen the decline credit thing done, to a witchy customer.

I agree about the kids thing. Most kids are way to shy to order.

I have never worked in a resturant where the specials are old and they are trying to get rid of.

The lemon thing. When I chop lemons for tea, I'm gulity of not washing them before I chop them. However, when I do chop them they fall into the bucket I use for them. Then I will use tongs to get them out.

I HATE making hot teal such a hassle.

I couldn't tell you the calories of any the food I have served, but I have never been told to lie to a customer.

Most of the time if's just a hour until closing. I won't make a fresh cup of coffee until I have a order for it.

I've worked for 5 different restaurants and a catering company and the worst thing I have ever seen someone giving a customer a paper cup that just fell on the floor... and this was when the customer REALLY insisted that he didn't care.

All of my restaurant friends would back me up when saying, a lot of those stories are either completely BS or over exaggerated.
 
The "hot tea" one was new. I will have to tell my wife that one. She doesn't drink coffee in the evening - prefers tea.
 
None of that stuff bugged me when I was in a restaurant. I didn't even mind doing Tea....it's an extra thing to carry, no biggie. Our coffee makers had a hot watter nozzle though so I don't really get the heating up the water reference :confused:

I agree with you completely. I'm not saying these things never happen, but I have NEVER seen anyone reject a credit card to embarrass someone, complain about getting tea (and we didn't even boil the water in either restaurant I worked at), given decaf in lieu of regular (didn't find cleaning a pot excessively hard work), added sugar to anything, let alone a kid's meal, pushed food so it didn't expire (though I have had heard Ramsey talking to the chefs about staying on top of waste BEFORE foods spoil), or lied about the contents of anything on the menu by refusing to give the calorie count, If I didn't know, I'd check and it certainly wasn't against policy to hand this information out. I would also NEVER tell a vegetarian something was vegetarian if it wasn't. I also would never pass whole or 2% (only milk we carried) off as skim.

To make the OP feel worse however, I didn't wash the lemon and no one I knew did. We would wash our hands before cutting them up and the only part touched was the rind. Knowing the procedure, I'd toss 3 or 4 in my water or tea (or on my chicken or seafood) in a heartbeat without batting an eye.

btw, if you really want something to worry about, never eat at a buffet again. At the end of a shift, there were ever hardly any dirty paper towels in the men's bathroom. It's only speculation because I didn't have a 1st person prospective of the event, most don't appear to wash their hands. They then run to the salad bars touching all those utensils. You then come along afterward and use them yourself. :)

I don't know. The snippets were provided from waiters/waitresses all over the U.S.. That's a lot of ground to cover. I think those things are in the realm of possibility. I don't think every one of them happens in every restaurant, but I think they can and do happen somewhere. YMMV.

I'm not your restaurant friend - but the first 9 are complete horse ****. No one I have ever worked with has done anything nasty to a customer, ever.

And we washed our lemons. But yes, we touched them. We touched a lot of things.

I bring hand sanitizer with me. After handling the utensils at a buffet, I use it. I got sick one time after eating at a buffet and I am much more careful now. I don't know if the hand sanitizer helps, but it makes me feel better.

I keep a bottle in my purse too. I usually wash w/ soap and water in the RR, but in a pinch I use the hand sanitizer (family too).

I had heard about lemons being a problem before this.

I get Iced Tea with lemon at almost every meal out - and sometimes leon for my water. I am almost never sick. You would think people would be sick more often if it is that much of a problem.

ETA: I'm not buying the hot tea thing either.

Maybe the acidity neutralizes the germs. :laughing: I've been doing the same as you. I don't get sick very often either.
